Proton to introduce new sedan in 2021, likely Preve replacement – another sedan and an SUV to follow

Proton to introduce new sedan in 2021, likely Preve replacement – another sedan and an SUV to follow

During the launch of the 2019 Proton Saga facelift, Proton CEO Li Chunrong reiterated the automaker’s plans to introduce a new model every year, and a graphic from the slide deck from his speech provided clues to what’s in the pipeline.

Based on the suggested profiles, it’s no surprise to see the shape of the next model slated for introduction, which is an SUV. This will of course be the X50, which will be based on the Geely Binyue. The next car after that will be a sedan, out in 2021. In the current line-up, the car that desperately needs a replacement is the Preve, so we could be looking at a C-segment offering popping up, with the Geely Binrui the likely candidate.

For the Chinese market, two engine choices are available for the Binrui, a 1.0 litre direct-injected three-cylinder unit offering 134 hp and 180 Nm, and a 1.4 litre petrol with 131 hp and 215 Nm. The car, which utilises the automaker’s B-Segment Modular Architecture (BMA) platform (which also underpins the Binyue), can accommodate other engines from the brand, including a 1.5 litre turbo direct-injected engine developed in partnership with Volvo.

Proton to introduce new sedan in 2021, likely Preve replacement – another sedan and an SUV to follow

Geely Binrui.

Equipment includes a three-spoke leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, digital instrument cluster, push-start button and a widescreen 10.25-inch infotainment display, with smartphone pairing functionalities and GPS navigation, voice recognition and rear view camera in the mix.

The new sedan in 2021 will be followed by another sedan in 2022, and the guess is that this will be a Perdana replacement model, or possibly that for the Persona. We’ve heard in the past that the automaker has plans to keep localised development going for some models in its line-up, so it could well be that the car in question will be the replacement for the current Accord-based Perdana, derived from the Geely Borui.

The final model in the mystery quartet is another SUV, due in 2023. By then, it should be time for an X70 replacement, and this could well be the vehicle slated for entry four years down the road. Interestingly, there’s no suggestion of an MPV, which was on the cards and set to be based on the Geely Jiaji.

Geely Borui and Jiaji.

Last year, it was reported that Proton had secured the use of intellectual properties (IP) and rights to manufacture and sell three Geely models, the Jiaji being one of them (the others being the X70 and the Binyue, or X50).

The MPV was supposedly due in 2020 as a replacement for the Exora, but given that the X50 – which was originally due out this year – has been pushed back to 2020, the timelines look to have been moved around a bit. The question is if the MPV remains scheduled for a market introduction, and if so, when.

Preve was a big failure to begin with. Still want to waste money on replacing the Preve?

Lets face facts. Geely wants to market their entire range of Geely cars in Malaysia as Protons. Thus Proton is merely a distributor or official reseller

You clearly one of Malaysian that think LHD to RHD conversion is as easy as mirroring the car like Peugeot did. I am happy with Proton if that is the only thing they do. As long as high quality, and can generate jobs for Malaysian. After all, who do you think you are when u said “merely a distributor or official reseller”? Are u one of Proton’s manager? They do & will get involved with the design. Jangan cakap kosong bro. Ini zaman orang cakap based on facts. MeMalukan “bangsa Malaysia” aja.

          Aduhai….its not a Preve.
Its a new car for that class.

If the previous model in that class fail then there is no need to put a new model to fill the gap and let others enjoyed the market share?

Everyone had already face the fact. X70 sales figure is the proof. If Geely replaced Preve with their model then how is it ‘wasting money’?

Time to save money for 20% downpayment for Preve replacement. 2021 is 2 years from now but should wait for a year for 2nd batch, so it is 3 years to 2022, so doenpayment must at least 30%. Rm75k x 30% = RM23k. Save RM640 per month for 3 years. Then get 9 years loan. So with just 3% interest rate, means only pay RM620 per month. We need more competitor to Cibik, Altis and Mazda 3 please. Frking bored with C segment sedan here in Msia

The culture that set up Proton does not have the DNA to relate to people and value attribute persons outside of external supervision . They respect people only in profit ventures without personal relations. They only relate to their own. The culture does not have the quality of anamnesis and historical recapitulation which is the basis of modern technological capacity and science. Hence mounting and raiding other structures and concerns is the only available option. There is no other.

If 2021, Proton introduces replacement of Preve which is C Segment, the platform that they should use is CMA then BMA as most of the C segment cars using independent rear suspension such as the Multi Link Suspension.

If using Geely Binrui as the based, BMA is the one which comes with Torsion Beam Suspension. Even now, 2020 Toyota introduced Corolla with independent rear suspension via their new TNGA platform which offer better ride comfort and greater handling.

Interesting that the Jia Ji MPV isn’t in the chart, since Proton already has the intellectual rights for it. If it’s push back to 2023, it’ll be the face lift version of Jia Ji and they would have wasted the limited time frame of this intellectual rights given (10 years only from 2017, if I’m not mistaken).

B Segment is the main seller (cash cow) for most car companies here and the Persona still isn’t good enough to give serious challenge to Vios or City. Rather than a C Segment sedan in 2021, perhaps a new B segment sedan is more appropriate. By then, Proton will have 2 cash cows to challenge in this popular segment (X50 and new Persona). The volume in sales of these 2 will generate more profit Vs a new C segment sedan.

Then in 2022, launch the Jia Ji MPV, by which time the facelift Exora will be due for replacement. The market for MPV here is limited to the few players but even fewer in the affordable price range. Again a gamble if compared to launching a new C segment sedan but C segment sedan is a shrinking market (& the C segment X70 can easily influence conversion from sedan).

Lastly 2023, will be X70 replacement. By then, there might not be a need for a C segment sedan anymore. OK, maybe slot a C segment or D segment somewhere in between but this segment will be more for show casing rather than be cash cow. In fact, by then perhaps the D segment will not be a sedan but a SUV. Imagine a D segment SUV like the Haval H9.

By streamlining Proton product range segment, Tg Malim production can concentrate on the core products, 3S/4S dealers will be more focused in sales.

    Just my 2 Sen.

P1 can intro 2 powertrain for All new C-segment.
Lower 1.4L NA to replace persona and another 1.0L or 1.5L turbo for Preve.

As long as can maintain the price range (50 to 70k), this new car good enough to challenge B-segment car which conquered by Jap brand.

Proton (pre Geely) just didn’t have the economies of scale, no matter how successful that model was. The R&D cost wasn’t even covered by the miniscule sales. To add insult to injury, they’re bleeding till our tax monies had to be pumped in. All just to justify a certain group’s ego. I think our tax monies better be spend on other beneficial things than to prop up some cronies ego.

In this era or cooperation, vehicles are build on a single modular platform to be shared not only by the brand but also by the entire group of companies. Proton will most likely share platforms and vehicles from Geely, sharing the R&D, production costs to maximise the limited amount of funds available. It would be foolish and wasteful to go back to the old days, just have a stand alone vehicle for shiok sendiri.
