Targeted fuel subsidy to be announced in two weeks

The mechanism involved in the targeted fuel subsidy for RON 95 petrol will be announced in early September, according to domestic trade and consumer affairs (KPDNHEP) minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the announcement on the matter will be made once cabinet approves the scheme, the New Straits Times reports.

“Everything, including the implementation mechanism, will be revealed during the press conference which is expected to be held in less than two weeks, if everything goes according to schedule,” he said earlier this week.

The fuel subsidy was initially supposed to be announced in Q1 this year, but its implementation date kept being brought forward. The government has since come up with a new plan to ensure that only those eligible for the subsidy will get it.

Targeted fuel subsidy to be announced in two weeks

During Budget 2019, finance minister Lim Guan Eng had said that the government planned to subsidise owners of vehicles and motorcycles with engine capacities below 1,500cc and 125cc respectively a subsidy rate of 30 sen per litre for RON 95 petrol. This would be capped at 100 litres per owner of a vehicle and 40 litres for those with motorcycles.

The new scheme will no longer utilise this method, and will instead switch to cash being directly given to lower income B40 households already enlisted for the cost of living aid (BSH) scheme, similar to that being done for the current BSH programme.

Currently, the government is subsiding RON 95 petrol for all users, capping the price of the fuel at RM2.08 a litre. It has been previously reported that the price cap on RON 95 petrol will be lifted once the targeted fuel subsidy scheme comes into effect.

Once the RON95 subsidy is removed, lots of cases of “Harga Barang Naik” will happen. Business ppl will hike up up prices, or take advantage to make more profit.

After price hikes, the prices will not come down, as we have witnessed at all eateries, shops, etc.

I hope the govt will not be “tikus baiki labu”.

Just wait and see how this works out…

Just wondering if the BSH recipient does not own a motorcycle or car whc can be verified in JPJ database, will the subsidy be given to him or her? I am pretty sure there will be many such people?

“We will use the BSH list to decide who gets the cash. We can cross-check it against data from JPJ. From there, we can see who owns what vehicle. Those who don’t own any will not receive the cash”

So they mean if you are too poor to own any vehicle, you do not deserve any help. Got it. PH only looks after those who got vehicles and the rich.

  • Rm30 per year. Inflation cost is much more, and lost of BRIM even more. Whoever thought this idea was good must be nuts.

Then this is no difference than BRIM.. not fuel subsidy. Doing so will be exactly same as what BN had done.

How can you ensure the money directed into the recipients will be genuinely & fully utilized on fuel?

Bro, the biggest difference is during DSNR time, the government can afford to pay both BRIM and fuel subsidy!!!!!

Unfortunately, no Perodua can achieve anywhere near the claimed fuel economy.

    Volkswagen Tiguan luxury car 1400CC – RM150k
    Mercedes C180 luxury car 1600 cc – RM220k
    BMW 318i luxury car 1600 CC – RM180k
Honda CRV luxury car 1500 cc – RM170k

This goes to show that the current Government has the same Government servants as the Government of the past. Both also unable to make proper policy that is applicable.

Well the executives can formulate and propose, but in the end it’s the ministers that gives green light. So the buck stops at the ministers.

If the instructions were bad, it isn’t their downlines’ fault. The blame all goes to the leader.

No need subsidy as the intended amount is insignificant. Then, dont regulate the price but just set the max ceiling price. Let station owners decide how much cheaper they want to sell. Most people will bark if this is done as they will said all petrol station will sell at ceiling price.

That wont happen….those barking will be surprised at how low some company or station can sell their fuel at. It will be lower than what the gomen tell us all this while thats for sure. Petrol station profit depends a lot on volume they sell. There will be some naughty (in a good way) station operators selling at very interesting price.

Please remember that until today the gomen did not fullfil their promise to share the formula on how to calculate the petrol selling price based from world oil price.

Once the current fuel subsidy can no longer be enjoyed by all, namely B40, M40 and T20, will we then see less cars being purchased and more used cars being made available for sale?

Yes, finally a good move by government. Car and fuel price in Malaysia are too low and causing so many traffic jam.

RON95 should price at RM3.50 per litre and people will start finding Prius, Prius C and CT200h which will again proving that Toyota group hybrids have the best fuel consumption, resale value and reliability.
