Tesla Cybertruck tri-motor production to start 2021, base RWD model launch pushed to late 2022 – report

With the launch of the Cybertruck, American electric vehicle maker Tesla has enjoyed strong reception in terms of bookings for its new pick-up model. Now, Business Insider reported that Tesla has revised the production timelines at both ends of the Cybertruck range.

The most affordable Cybertruck, the US$39,900 (RM166,360) single-motor, rear-wheel-drive variant has had its production start pushed back a year to late 2022, while the start of production for the range-topping US$69,900 (RM291,500) three-motor, all-wheel-drive version has been brought forward to 2021, a year earlier than Tesla had initially announced.

This appears to follow Tesla’s release strategy employed for the Model 3 sedan, which also saw the more expensive versions introduced to the market early in the model’s lifecycle, ahead of the base version, the report said, adding that Tesla has received at least 250,000 refundable US$100 (RM415) pre-orders since its unveiling in November.

Before its launch, Tesla claimed that the Cybertruck would be more capable than the Ford F-150. The EV pick-up duly made short work of a tug-of-war featuring the two contrasting trucks, though it wasn’t clear which specification of F-150 was used in the demonstration; the most potent twin-cab (Supercrew) configuration with the 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 engine has a rated towing capacity of 13,000 lb, or 5,902 kg.

In comparison, the Tesla Cybertruck touted a payload capacity of up to 1,590 kg and a towing capacity of 6,350 kg. A smaller version of the Cybertruck could follow in the future, Tesla founder Elon Musk said in a tweet shortly after. Musk noted, however, that the Cybertruck will be the firm’s last product unveiling in a while, therefore the smaller truck will be some way off.

    • I admit in my moment of drunkness, this is what came out from my hazy mind. Who said when your drunk, you cannot draw a straight line? See this car got so many straight lines at all angles.

….to perfectly match the straight-edge design of this vehicle body, the wheels should be square!
