From a short video posted by Twitter user Norman @tuairumahkita, a pair of cyclists are seen on an unidentified dual carriageway somewhere in Malaysia, drafting behind a large lorry. Drafting is an accepted practice in cycling, notably in velodrome racing and whilst riding in the peloton during a road race.
Doing so conserves energy and allows the cyclist behind the lead rider to build up enough speed to slingshot past for an overtake but doing so on public roads is dangerous and fool hardy in the extreme. In the video, the lorry is seen travelling at a constant speed, with the large wind shadow behind the vehicle providing the perfect place for the cyclists to shelter from the air.
However, it is very likely the lorry driver has no idea there are two cyclists following closely behind and the cyclists are unable to see road conditions because their sight is blocked by the vehicle. Additionally, the negative pressure area behind the moving vehicle will tend to “suck in” the cyclist following behind as rider and bicycle combined are not going to weigh much more than 80 kg or so.
Should the lorry stop suddenly, or a pothole appear in the path of the cyclist, it is likely the outcome will be tragic or at the very least involve skin being left on tarmac since lycra is not particularly abrasion resistant. So, leave the drafting to the racers and if you are cycling on a public road, dual carriageway or otherwise, it is best to keep to the left and ride single-file.

Cyclist suka buat hal. Yesterday (Sunday) morning also accident happened in Putrajaya near PICC. Cyclist seems to ride side by side on the road and being hit by a Toyota VF.
Tak semua cyclist macam tu. Ramai cylist yg sangat menitik beratkan keselamatan. Cuma disebabkan nila setitik – masyarakat membuat generalization yg semua cylist macam tu.
Saya suka cara penulis memberikan teguran – sangat neutral dan barguna.
Pada cylist, terutama yang baru nak mula, cycling adalah satu sukan yang baik untuk kesihatan. Jangan rosakkan pandangan masyarakat terhadap yang baik ini.
Kepada pengguna jalan raya pula, terutamanya pemandu kereta, kita kena bertimbang rasa kepada semua pengguna jalan termasuk cylist.
Banyak juga video yg pemandu melanggar cylist, motorist, pedestrians kerana whatsapp sambil memandu.
Sesungguhjya setiap perkara itu ada kebaikan dan keburukan. Terpulang kepada kita untuk samada menjadikan ia baik atau sebaliknya.
Walau apa pun, kita harus bersederhana dalam setiap yg kita buat, samada bersukan, atau pun memberi komen

Speaking as a long time roadie, what they are doing is not dangerous at all. The lorry is not going fast, more importantly the dude on the left is constantly drifting into the wind to check road conditions ahead. They know what they are doing.
And when the lorry brakes suddenly, the cyclists get to kiss the lorry’s rear bar and tires. It’s a win-win.

Me myself are a cyclist, but i never do this kind of stupid thing…imagine what gonna happen if suddenly the lorry go for an emergency stop…if dont have the balls to go against the win, then better cycling indoor…
This is a great article, I’ve also seen people do this on the highway and it’s insane. They think they’re driving F1 and trying to get a “tow” down the slipstream.
Nearest to behind a larger vehicle is the lowest pressure spot which also directly related to the speed if the vehicle. Another spot is by each sides in this situation, the two cyclists may not realise there exist a foce that pulling then under the larger vehicle.
at home: “let’s go cycling, exercise and keep fit”
on road: “let’s slipstream behind that bus, can save energy and go farther”

There has been a sharp increase in cycling activity the last 3 – 5 years thanks to the possibility of paying for a bike on installment. So, the 90% – 100% loan fan club started buying bicycles like there’s no tomorrow.

First of all, as an experience cyclist and someone who has driven on roads all over the world. I can say without a doubt that this is as dangerous as riding a motorbike. In other words, it is not more dangerous than any other 2 wheel vehicles on the road.
Drafting is a common practice for cyclist, you will see that in competition like Tour De France. The group called Peloton literally is a huge group of cyclists travelling together to save energy.
As for drafting behind a truck, it is an unpleasant experience since the truck constantly spits out dirt and dust.
