‘We don’t want to pressure motorists’ – must have freedom to choose between RFID, SmartTAG, says PM

Motorists must be given the freedom to choose between RFID, Touch n Go and SmartTAG as toll payment options, prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said. This comes after the rollout of RFID by PLUS on the main stretch of the North South Expressway for passenger cars, which led to congestion at some toll plazas.

“Users must be given the freedom whether to use RFID, Touch n Go or SmartTAG,” he told reporters after the launch of the Keluarga Malaysia Agricommodity tour programme in Putrajaya yesterday.

The PM added that the cabinet, which had a meeting yesterday, is of the view that road users must be given a choice, just like how it was when TnG was introduced in its early years and cash payments were still allowed to continue, Bernama reported.

‘We don’t want to pressure motorists’ – must have freedom to choose between RFID, SmartTAG, says PM

RFID for toll payment has been in place for a few years now in the Klang Valley, but PLUS is doing it in a much larger scale, equipping toll plazas from Juru in Penang to Skudai in Johor with RFID lanes. Some of these lanes were reportedly converted from SmartTAG lanes. There were also reports of vehicles getting stuck at RFID lanes, causing congestion.

Ismail Sabri suggests a more organic approach, which is to retain TnG and SmartTAG lanes and let users slowly adapt. “If it is a pilot project, it will take time after several months then we will leave it to the motorists to decide. Eventually, if the RFID facilitates their journey, they will migrate to the RFID,” he said.

“Don’t make it all RFID. If there are 10 lanes, maybe several lanes for RFID and the rest should be for TnG and SmartTAG. We don’t want to pressure motorists,” the Bera MP urged. What do you think of the PM’s call?

By the way, PLUS has said it will give out free replacements for faulty tags at toll plazas. Personnel will hand out a coupon for a full detection diagnostic test should the tag be unreadable by either the RFID lane’s reader or the staff’s handheld one. This test can be done at the nearest TnG fitment centre, and in the event that the RFID tag still cannot be read, TnG will replace the tag for free.

By all means, I don’t mind people here trying to dissuade others from using RFID, it makes my trip zooming past the RFID gantries much more smoother when others avoid using it.

Ahh let me add my experience as I am RFID user here, 10/10 times it don’t work for me so if you see me highbeam flash other RFID users approaching the toll, it is to tell you not to use it and move away to let me zoom past the gantry.

Remember, it doesn’t work so move away and let me thru.

That’s what happens when you give a company complete monopoly! They can choose to do what ever they want!!

    Here are my suggestions:-
    1) Allow other e-wallets to be integrated with the RFID system

    2) Give users incentives to migrate to RFID.

    3) Not a big fan of sticking the RFID sticker on the headlights, there should be other options

    4) Don’t charge for the RFID sticker

    5) Make sure it’s working properly before forcing people to use it!

    • They can improve on the visibility of where the new RFID gates are located so that drivers can choose the lanes to use. Also may think of standardising where these new RFID gates are located at the toll plazas. Some entry/exits the gate is on the far right lanes while other gates are on the middle or left lanes..
To make matters worse, like the Sg. Buloh Exit, drivers need to cut across all 6 lanes if they use the RFID lane to take the left offramp to head towards Sg. Buloh.

i think this is much more on the business issues.smart tag contract is ending soon. PM thought is right.Once you established the system, don’t eliminate the system because it’s not cheap to have the device long time ago. smart tag still convenient even though difficulties happened due to drain batteries, not enough tng credit, block by IR blocker tinted film and so on. this RFID still require your tng credit to be top up. You may enhance by adding this RFID additional lane option for more effective toll system but don’t demolish the smart tag. The most important nowadays is expedite improving the tng system especially PLUS highways how to use e-wallet instead of top-up using physical card.

Oh really? Can we also have choice between keeping 2G mobile, 3G, 4G & 5G too? Some old folks still have Nokia 3310 and cannot use their phone if 2G is obsoleted. The same also please do not outlaw bullock carts from highways as some prefers the slower transportation. They mustn’t be pressured to change and adapt to the modern world, right? And since nobody has complained paying tolls during cash era, let’s go back to cash payment option again.

Seriously if we pander to those who cannot change, the country will not advance.

I’ve been using RFID sticker since 2018, and up until today, there is sometimes it doesn’t detect my RFID sticker correctly and I’ve to reverse and forward at the lane. The system is not reliable. Just remove the crossbar and use car plate identification method instead just like in Singapore and Australia. So no more stuck at toll booth

what they should have done is to give whoever using rfid, discount like 10% on toll rates, considering they are the lab mice.
and those hours of testing by PLUS counted shite, because they were done under controlled conditions.
how to about the system to stand for 1,000,000 users like real life today? now u know how hot those readers gonna be, right.

they should have done the discount thing, then coupled the rfid with smart tag lanes meaning those with tags can use rfid also can go, and please one more thing, be more careful next time

now what PLUS should do is to issue stop work notice on all rfid lanes. or if u dont want to do that, issue stop payment notice for whoever people doing the rfid thing.

  • Like all other things in Malaysia, PLUS just need to weather out the complaints and eventually people will accept it, just like back then moving to cashless payment. Same issues, same complaints, eventually people get used to it.

Of course, you like complaints as it’s not directed to you. When there is competition, businesses always work towards zero complaints because no paying customers wants to get used to complaints. But of course, PLUS has no competition.

  • The toll I am passing daily. 6 lanes of touch n go and 3 lanes of smart tag. PLUG bever touched touch n go lanes but converted 2 smart tag lanes to RFID.

Signal of RFID is not faster than smart tag and the signal is weak, caused long Q. Should not be long Q as little people used it. Long Q at smart tag lane.

Really stupid Plus. The number of users are so little, just converted 1 lane good enough but did it purposely to force you switching to RFID.

Smart tag users are saturated. They want to push this RFID to earn extra money!

I was once one of those early testers for RFID where it was by invite only. I’ve not been using RFID for a year now. Unlike SmartTag which sometimes allows you to tag your touch n go card in the event of a failure to read, you have to back up 100% on a RFID lane and are forced to switch to a touch n go or SmartTag lane which in return creates a massive jam during peak period. Yep I’ve sinced then abandoned RFID usage and returned back to SmartTag.

    1) TnG, SmartTag and RFID is come from the same company. Split them and allow fair competition. Then let rakyat gain the benefit.
    2) Activate Anti Monopoly and Anti-Pencatutan act.
    3) Control price.
