Perodua not selling cheap cars, but price optimised cars so avg Malaysians can enjoy latest tech – CEO

Affordability has always been a Perodua hallmark, and it has been something that has been ingrained in the buying psyche over the years. Whether that slant is seen as a plus or a minus depends on how you approach it. The cost-conscious have generally had no complaints, save wanting to see more tech for the money. Detractors, meanwhile, have called its cars cheap and lacking in advancement.

Whatever the case may be, the automaker is looking to ditch the long implanted “cheap car” association, something that it believes has more negative connotations than good ones. “When it’s said we sell cheap cars, it comes across like we are giving a sub-standard product to Malaysians. We are not selling cheap cars, but price optimised cars,” said Perodua president and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“What optimised means is that we try to give more value, to have better specification at a reasonable price. We are not just providing mobility, but mobility with convenience and ease, with new features so that average Malaysians can enjoy the latest technology,” he said.

Zainal said the attempt to fulfil all the mobility requirements of buyer and increasing the level of tech and refinement without breaking the bank can be seen in the all-new Axia. While this has inevitably brought about a price increase with the new car, he explained that the D74A is more expensive due to its bigger size and the incorporation of advanced features, and not because of a planned price hike, something it says it will attempt to stave off as long as possible.

“With the increased specifications, the increase in safety, the pricing will be different from before. We increased the price of the new model not because of inflation or material costs, but because of additional features that we included,” he said. Will it be good enough to lose the negative imprint for good? Time will tell. Full details on the all-new Axia when it is officially launched tomorrow – you can read our first drive impressions here.

Kesian Msians. Dulu cheapest P2 sold at 25k now its 50% more expensive but Msian gaji still macam dulu so even P2 now becoming unaffordable to rakyat B40. P2 no longer value for money to rakyats.

If P2 dont care about their loyal B40 customers anymore it is time to open the market and let other brands bring in their value for money cars, let China bring in their cheap EVs too. We should stop giving tongkats to P2 because their purpose is no longer to help the rakyat.

  • “Can enjoy latest tech”, then explain why the new Axia is still running the old gutless 1.0L when its Indonesian sibling get not just a carryover 1.2L engine from the old Agya but a newer, more powerful and more fuel efficient 1.2L engine from the Rocky/Raize.

The new Axia is already priced well into the territory of other local 1.3L cars and it’s top spec model is getting really close in price to other local entry spec 1.5/1.6L cars. They seriously can’t offer a more appropriate engine (like the 1.2L engine in the new Agya) for the price range of the new Axia?

If P2 offer the new 1.2L engine like the Agya in Indonesia then I think the backlash would be much less. We Malaysians like LAGI POWER LAGI BEST. To me it is still ‘cheap’ and ‘old tech’ since it comes with an old engine.

P2 making the same mistake like Toyota with the Camry last time, pay so much close to RM 200k but get the same old engine when the Camry elsewhere has a brand new Dynamic Force Engine.

Do you know why Toyota and Honda cars of past decade all seem poor quality? That is because the models we buy locally are all manufactured locally, or at neighbouring 3rd world countries. Honda factory is in Melaka, some Toyota models in Malaysia also, or else from Thailand. So now we know, it is not the design of the car, but the assembly and parts used in a car that define the final end product quality.

if I’m buying a car today, I’d be easily swayed to choose the top-range axia over the myvi. Several reasons. myvi still based on old platform. tech wise, myvi lags behind. Now I havent test-driven the new axia yet, but if Hafriz’s review video is accurate, it means the new axia is actually more refined when driven than the current myvi. In terms of cabin size, it looks like the axia is similar to myvi too. So, the question is, why get the myvi? both cars are still entry level cars, so no difference in “class” there at all.

Perodua cars last gen was good, low fuel consumptions, low maintenance, less problem.

But the latest model has been dented by some unuseful features that forced to have and hardly to be removed. A practical car doesn’t need these.

    – Eco idles : Top irritating deficiency handicap bugger.
    – AEB : No sure it will actually 100% works.
    – LKA : Interceptions of steering control rather scary.
    – ACC : Unnecessary useless features.

Safety assists features as vsc, abs, blind spot monitor, reverse camera are welcome and people don’t mind paying.

he can say this because they’re basically a monopoly. if competition between all car makers were fair and non-local cars weren’t taxed to death, i doubt anyone would even consider P1 or P2. it sucks what these two have done to Malaysia’s auto industry. and to think Perodua was introduced to provide affordable cars to the masses? not anymore i guess. maybe it’s time people start looking at used cars if budget doesn’t allow for new over 50k purchases because spending that amount of money on a not only a Perodua, but an Axia at that is completely insane.
