2024 Peugeot 408 review in Malaysia – 1.6T, 8AT; three variants; from RM146k; looks great, but is it any good?

2024 Peugeot 408 review in Malaysia – 1.6T, 8AT; three variants; from RM146k; looks great, but is it any good?

The Peugeot 408 was launched in Malaysia back in April this year and is available in three locally-assembled (CKD) variants, starting with the base Allure at RM146,055 on-the-road without insurance. This is followed by the Premium at RM166,055, while the range-topping GT goes for RM196,055.

Nestled within the alluring fastback body is a PureTech 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine making 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) at 5,750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. This is standard for all variants of the 408, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

In terms of equipment, the 408 gets full LED headlamps and taillights, with the GT set apart by its matrix LED front lights and 3D ‘claw effect’ LED rear lamps. The range-topper also comes with larger 20-inch alloy wheels in Monolithe Black, while lesser variants come with 18-inch units in Granite Grey.

Inside, the seat upholstery for the Allure is vinyl, progressing to full leather for the Premium, while the GT gets premium Nappa leather. All three get a powered driver’s seat, with one in the GT gaining memory and massage functions. Only the Premium and GT are fitted with a powered front passenger seat, with the Allure having manual adjustment instead.

Elsewhere, a 10-inch i-Cockpit digital display is standard across the board, although it is a 3D quartz version for the GT. The i-Cockpit setup also includes a 10-inch touchscreen for the infotainment, which is paired with either six (Allure and Premium) or 10 speakers (GT only), the latter being a Focal-branded sound system.

Safety and driver assistance systems include six airbags, a tyre pressure monitor and the usual array of passive safety systems. Active systems such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, front collision warning, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are only found on the GT, which also gains a 360-degree camera.

The 408 is certainly a striking car to look at, but is there any substance to match the style? Hafriz Shah attempts to find out in our latest video review, so tune in and share your thoughts on the 408 in the comments below.

Of course this is a good car. Despite its impressive power and handling, many people hesitate to purchase this car due to Peugeot’s historical reputation for reliability issues, limited spare part availability, and high maintenance costs.
Auto journalists will not cover these simply because they won’t know it (we buyers too), until we own one. Someone willing to take the risk, I’ll continue driving my Toyota while watching the comments.

    • I think the consumers here care more about RV. Reasons to buy car, reason 1 RV, reason 2 RV, reason 3 RV.

it’s a wait and see kind of situation. more likely people will wait till year end then seek discounted stocks. so let’s hear from these buyer of their experience. if it is indeed all good, then perhaps peugeot will have a chance in our road

95% Japanese cars are for most poorer people

      How come?

Because poorer people cannot afford to.lose money. Resale value is very important

Continental cars are for the rich ,well to do and professional .
.resale value is not ithat important to them

So which category are most car buyers
In Malaysia? Richer or poorer category?

    Dear Paultan.org/Gerard/Hafriz

I haven’t watched the youtube, but do the 408s got auto hold function and and do they have the low speed follow assist during the traffic jam?

  • This looks like a good direction for Peugeot, bar the 20 inch wheel. I would definitely go for the midrange model if I was in the market for this car.

RM 1.5k per rubber? 6k to change all when the time comes? That’s just madness. Or maybe I’m just not rich enough haha.

My trusty 508 with 18 inch, cladded with a decent continental UC7 cost me RM500 per piece, 2k for all 4. Even then feels expensive already. And no, I won’t compromise on the only thing that connects the car to the road, and I’m sure many is like me.

    • buy the car and resell the rim, lala beng will buy the 20inch from you, this car gets you immediate cashback and that’s what we call instant resell value

if you want to buy this car, and i hope you do, you better not think about selling it for 7-9 years or if you are buying it with cash
