The Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway widening project – mooted as far back as 2022 – is set to start construction in end-February, a month later than planned, Selangor state infrastructure and agriculture exco Datuk Izham Hashim has said, according to a Harian Metro report.
Replying yesterday to Gombak Setia MP Hilman Idham’s query about the project’s progress in the Selangor state legislative assembly, Izham said the widening will involve adding one lane per direction from KM 19.2 (Gombak toll) to KM 64.5 (Bentong intersection) – totalling 45.3 km – as well as additional road lighting from Genting Sempah to Bentong.
He added that the widening will be done within the existing highway corridor/reserve and that no additional land acquisition is required. “However, if there are residents within the highway reserve who need to be moved, the state government will ensure that the relocation process is carried out lawfully, without neglecting their welfare,” he said.
The RM2.1-billion undertaking will be fully funded by the concessionaire, AFA Prime Berhad. Upon completion in 2029, there will then be four lanes from Gombak to Genting Sempah (and another four going the other way, of course) and three lanes from Genting Sempah to Bentong. The iconic tunnel section won’t be widened, but a new tunnel will be built 30 metres to the left, making three in total. Learn more here.
