RM1.909 bil spent on road maintenance in 11 states in Peninsular Malaysia last year, says works minister

Works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has said that a total of RM1.909 billion was spent to maintain roads in 11 states across Peninsular Malaysia last year, The Star reports.

The expenditure, which covered 13,596.85 km of roads, included routine maintenance, periodic pavement and non-pavement maintenance, bridge maintenance, maintaining streetlamps and signal lights as well as small maintenance allocations for each district engineer.

Nanta was responding a question posed by Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan about the sum allocated for road maintenance in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. He revealed that RM317.973 million was spent in Sabah, with the amount being used to cover the same maintenance aspects as in Peninsular Malaysia.

He also also noted that 79.45% of last year’s allocation was for Peninsular Malaysia roads, with an average of 7.22% per state. The remaining allocation was split between Sabah (13.23%), Sarawak (6.378%) and Labuan (0.95%).

“To address and reduce maintenance backlogs, the ministry is always working towards obtaining additional allocations from the finance ministry to ensure the safety and comfort of road users in Sabah,” Nanta said.
