The Indonesian government has invited Suzuki to take part in the republic’s national car programme, Kompas has reported.
Present at the Indonesian launch of the Suzuki Fronx was deputy minister of industry Faisol Riza, that who asked Suzuki to play a role in presenting a national car, which he said is a programme that is part of Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto’s mandate, according to the report.
Having been in operation in Indonesia since 1970 and with its own production facilities, Suzuki is considered to have strong capital and thus be in a position to contribute more to the development of Indonesia’s automotive industry, Kompas wrote.
The republic’s deputy minister of industry said that the Fronx has a domestic component level of around 60%, “which is a source of pride,” the news site reported the minister as saying. The deputy minister also hopes that Suzuki can be more active in designing and developing vehicles truly represent Indonesia’s identity in technical design and manufacturing aspects.
While 60% appears significant, the figure isn’t particularly high for Indonesia. Daihatsu and Toyota vehicles locally produced in the republic have around 75% to 95% local content, while Perodua also claims over 95% local content in its cars built here in Malaysia.
Manufactured at Suzuki’s plant in Cikarang – which also makes the Ertiga and XL7 – the Suzuki Fronx is a compact SUV to rival the likes of the Honda WR-V, Daihatsu Rocky and Nissan Magnite, and is priced from 259 million rupiah to 321.9 million rupiah (RM67k-84k).
Powered by a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated, mild-hybrid petrol powertrain producing 105 PS and 138 Nm, the Fronx packs an ADAS suite that features adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, vehicle swaying warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, high beam assist and a form of AEB called Dual Sensor Brake Support II (DSBS II).
