Based on road transport department (JPJ) data, Malaysia’s best-selling EV last month was the Tesla Model Y facelift (985 units). ‘Project Juniper’ was launched in Malaysia in February, but it seems that May was when deliveries began in earnest, shoving the Proton eMas 7 (862) into second place for the month.
Positions three, four and five went to BYD’s Atto 3 (505), Sealion 7 (406) and M6 (136) respectively, while the Denza D9 (129) and Chery Omoda E5 (116) took the next two spots. The next BYD sits in eighth (Seal, 94); the Dolphin seems to have dropped off both May and YTD lists entirely.
The Tesla Model 3 and Zeekr 009 sold an equal 90 units in May, while 77 units of the Xpeng X9 found Malaysian homes. In 12th sits the best-selling BMW EV (iX2, 72), well ahead of the i5 (39) and iX1 (37) in 16th and 17th respectively.
Proton’s first and only EV thus far is still king where year-to-date (YTD) figures are concerned (3,399). The BYD Sealion 7 is quite far away in second place (1,640), while the BYD Atto 3 (1,230) and Tesla Model Y (1,111) are third and fourth respectively. All other EVs in Malaysia are still in the sub-1,000-unit YTD club.
So far this year, the EV MPV battle is thus: BYD M6 (863), Denza D9 (524), Zeekr 009 (402) and Xpeng X9 (157). The BYD Seal may have beat the Tesla Model 3 in May, but the Chinese car is still lagging behind its American rival in the YTD standings (554 versus 698), thanks to the Model 3’s particularly strong February.
