Malaysian government has no plans to renegotiate existing highway concession agreements – Nanta

The Malaysian government has no plans to renegotiate existing highway concession agreements, including their durations as each agreement operates under their own terms and timelines, works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has said, reported New Straits Times.

While the government was open to discussing short-term toll hike deferments with highway concessionaires, which are typically carried out through compensation mechanisms, a full re-negotiation of concession terms was not on the table, Nanta said.

“Each highway operates under a different concession agreement with varying durations and conditions. We can negotiate postponements, but we still have to pay compensation. To overhaul an entire contract would require the concessionaire’s willingness. So far, there is no direction or decision to renegotiate any existing agreements,” the works minister said.

The toll fare hike deferment applied only for this year, with the government expected to bear more than RM500 million in compensation. “Let me clarify. The toll freeze applies only for 2025,” Nanta said, reported NST.

This was announced as part of prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s special “rakyat appreciation” address, which also revealed that the subsidised price of RON 95 petrol will be reduced to RM1.99 per litre later this year for the majority of Malaysians.
