Butterworth station to get RM30m upgrade to turn Penang Sentral into Seberang Perai’s transport hub

Butterworth station, served by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), is set to get a RM30 million upgrade in an effort to turn Penang Sentral into Seberang Perai‘s main transport hub, Bernama reports. The station is just a few hundred metres away from Penang Sentral.

According to transport minister Anthony Loke, this is a project under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12). The transport ministry has undertaken assessment and will appoint contractors next month before starting construction soon after.

The station will integrate KTM, Electric Train Service (ETS) and Komuter services with the Penang ferry, as well as the upcoming Mutiara Line LRT at Penang Sentral. “All three modes of transportation will be integrated, making Penang Sentral a public transport hub in Seberang Perai,” Loke said.

“This is an integrated public transport terminal concept that connects various modes at one place. So, development is not just confined to the island… there is balanced development between the island and Seberang Perai. This will surely turn it into a focal area, and we are confident it can become the pulse of development for the surrounding area,” he told reporters on Sunday.
