The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) last Friday successfully completed its inaugural test run, just a month after the first trainset arrived at JB’s Wadi Hana depot. The test train departed from the depot, passed Bukit Chagar station (the Malaysian terminus), travelled along the viaduct sections and reached the Singapore border before returning safely to the depot.
The run was participated in and witnessed by engineers from RTS Operations (joint-venture between Malaysia’s Prasarana RTS Sdn Bhd and Singapore’s SMRT RTS Pte Ltd), Jacobs, CRRC, Pestech and CHEC, with support from InfraCo partners Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd and Singapore’s Land Transport Authority.
RTS Operations said in a Facebook post that prior to dynamic testing, key safety and technical checks were completed, including line clearance, onboard system verification and traction power readiness. Initial runs will be conducted at low speeds, with gradual increases subject to strict safety requirements.
The 4-km rail link, which connects JB’s Bukit Chagar to Singapore’s Woodlands North, will be plied by driverless trainsets with a max capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour per way. When it is completed in December 2026, it will retire Keretapi Tanah Melayu‘s (KTM) Shuttle Tebrau. What will become of the century-old 1.1-km railway line across the Causeway?
