Car Buyer's Guide

Overview

The BMW X5 G05 LCI is a five-seat executive SUV for buyers who want all-wheel drive, an automatic transmission and a choice of petrol-hybrid or plug-in hybrid power. Launched in 2024, it suits drivers weighing a 308 hp xDrive40i against the stronger 502 hp xDrive50e. Prices start at RM470,800.

X5 in 2026 — what's new

For 2026, the G05 LCI X5 carries on with the xDrive40i M Sport and xDrive50e M Sport. The next 2027 X5, coded G65, arrives with Neue Klasse styling and technology, including an X-shaped front-light signature. Its announced powertrain line-up spans petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric and hydrogen options; the electric iX5 uses 800V architecture and has a quoted 845 km WLTP range.

Which variant to buy

Most buyers should pick the RM470,800 xDrive40i M Sport. It retains the 2,998 cc petrol-hybrid powertrain, AWD, automatic gearbox and five-seat layout, with 308 hp. Pay RM494,800 for the xDrive50e M Sport if the 502 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain is the reason for buying an X5. The RM24,000 gap buys plug-in hybrid hardware and 194 hp more; both are M Sport models, so check the equipment list for any further differences.

Verdict

The X5 keeps the decision focused: two 2,998 cc AWD automatic variants, both with five seats, split by petrol-hybrid versus plug-in hybrid power. It is not a low-entry executive SUV. Its starting price is RM1,912 above the Lexus RX, RM4,810 above the Audi Q8 e-tron and RM8,528 above the Audi Q7. The xDrive50e’s 502 hp is the clear technical draw, but it asks for RM24,000 more.
