Which variant to buy

Most buyers should begin with the RM134,469 2.0 2WD Mid: it has the same 162 hp 1,998 cc petrol engine, front-wheel drive, automatic transmission and five-seat layout as the RM151,469 2.0 2WD High. On paper, the RM17,000 gap pays for High trim rather than mechanical changes, so check the equipment list closely. Step up to the RM164,960 2.5 2WD High for 192 hp, the RM170,323 diesel for 173 hp, or the RM178,760 2.5T High AWD for 228 hp and all-wheel drive.

Verdict

The CX-5 range has a straightforward spread of powertrains, from the 162 hp 2.0-litre petrol to the 228 hp turbo petrol AWD. The turbo pairs its engine with a six-speed automatic and i-Activ all-wheel drive, but it does not get paddle shifters. Price is the sticking point at the top: the 2.5T costs RM39,960 more than the Omoda Jaecoo J7 and RM44,960 more than the Toyota Corolla Cross entry price.
