Grab Malaysia launches EV ride-hailing service from KLIA – 10 BYD M6 MPVs form the new electric fleet

Grab Malaysia has announced the addition of electric vehicles (EV) to its ride-hailing service with the introduction of an airport EV fleet exclusively for passengers travelling from KLIA. The new service was launched today by transport minister Anthony Loke.

The fleet, which is made up of 10 BYD M6 all-electric MPVs, is available for booking as one of the options through the Grap app, which lists door 4, Level 3 (the main arrival hall) as the pick-up point for the service, as opposed to Level 1 for the standard ride-hailing.

The company said that it had established an EV lounge at the terminal as an additional feature for users of the premium service, which costs slightly more than a regular six-seat ride option. For example, a ride from the airport to the city centre will cost about RM134, as opposed to RM105 for a regular six-seater.

Loke said the Grab initiative supports the government’s various efforts to improve the quality of the transportation system at the country’s main gateway.

“The selection of KLIA as the launch location is very strategic, not only because of the high volume of passenger traffic, but also because it provides maximum exposure to domestic and international consumers about Malaysia’s efforts in strengthening green mobility,” he said in his speech.

The new KLIA EV ride-hailing service is the result of Grab’s collaboration with BYD Sime Motors, Yinson Green Technologies (YGT) and Singapore-based EV charging service provider Power-Up Tech, which was inked in March. Under the partnership, YGT will provide Grab with comprehensive leasing packages for EVs in addition to a suite of electrification solutions.

  • BYD sells a record 4.27 million cars in 2024 – 40% more PHEVs sold than EVs, are the tables turning?

BYD sells a record 4.27 million cars in 2024 – 40% more PHEVs sold than EVs, are the tables turning?

By selling 514,809 units across the planet last month, BYD has wrapped up 2024 with worldwide sales of 4,272,145 units (+41.3% over 2023’s 3,024,417 units). It’s a new annual sales record for the Chinese carmaker and the first time it’s broken four million, Car News China reports.

Here’s the breakdown: 1,764,992 passenger battery-electric vehicles (EV), 2,485,378 passenger plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and 21,775 commercial vehicles. That’s 41.5% EV/58.5% PHEV in 2024 (720k more PHEVs than EVs), compared with 52.1% EV/47.9% PHEV in 2023 (125k more EVs than PHEVs).

You can see the tables have turned quite spectacularly – a consequence of Western tariffs on Chinese EVs, or changing consumer preferences at home? Against 2023, BYD’s EV sales increased 12% from 1.6 million units, while its PHEVs went up an incredible 72.8% from 1.4 million units.

What about exports? December saw 57,154 BYDs find homes outside China, propelling its 2024 total to 417,204 units. That’s nearly 72% more than the 242,766 units it exported in 2023; itself an insane 334% jump over 2022.

Cars aside, BYD is the Middle Kingdom’s number two battery supplier, with Tesla, Nio, and Toyota among its customers. The carmaker with the most R&D staff in the world installed 23.5 GWh of battery capacity in December (+32% year-on-year). In 2024, cumulative battery installations, including in EVs and stationary energy storage, hit 194.7 GWh (+29% YoY).

Closer to home, the Chinese giant is setting up a plant in Indonesia that is expected to begin operations in 2025’s fourth quarter, creating around 8,700 jobs. The company will be 31 years old this year.

BYD M6 EV – nearly 1,000 orders received for the MPV in the first month of it going on sale in Malaysia

It won’t be long before the BYD M6 makes its way into the country’s list of top selling electric vehicles and appearing in the upper end of the chart. Launched on October 15, response for the all-electric MPV has been strong, with nearly 1,000 orders received for it in its first month of going on sale here.

This was indicated by Jeffrey Gan, MD of retail and distribution of Sime Darby Motors Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Macau, yesterday in his speech during the launch of the BYD Sealion 7 SUV.

The M6 is on sale in Malaysia in two variant forms, the M6 Standard, which goes for RM109,800, and the M6 Extended, which is priced at RM123,800. Both are seven-seaters, but feature different battery capacities as well as output numbers from their electric powertrains.

The Standard features a 55.4 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that powers a front-mounted electric motor developing 163 PS (161 hp or 120 kW) and 310 Nm. This provides the MPV with a NEDC-rated range of 420 km and a 0-100 km/h time of 10.1 seconds.

The Extended, meanwhile, is equipped with a 71.8 kWh battery, and its motor has a higher power output of 204 PS (201 hp or 150 kW). The combination allows the variant a longer travel range of 530 km (also NEDC) and less time to get to the 100 km/h mark from standstill, doing so in 8.6 secconds. Top speed is identical for both, at 180 km/h.

As for charging, the M6 Standard can accept up to 89 kW of DC fast charging, while the Extended can take up to 115 kW, the latter taking 40 minutes to get the battery from a 10 to 80% state-of-charge. Meanwhile, AC charging is limited to 7 kW on both variants.

Standard equipment includes a rotating 12.8-inch central touchscreen display, analogue instrument gauges (with a five-inch TFT multi-info display), faux leather upholstery, keyless entry, push-button start, an NFC key card, automatic air-conditioning, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a six-speaker audio system and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity.

The list of kit common to both variants also includes a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, cruise control, a PM 2.5 air filter, an electronic parking brake, brake auto hold and a portable charging cable. The Extended adds on items such as a panoramic glass roof, six-way driver/four-way front passenger power-adjustable ventilated front seats (manual on the Standard), a Qi wireless mobile charger, a roof rack, alloy pedals, a powered tailgate and automatic high-beam control for the headlights.

  • 2024 BYD M6 EV MPV launched in Malaysia – up to 204 PS, seven-seater, two variants, RM109,800-RM123,800

2024 BYD M6 EV MPV launched in Malaysia – up to 204 PS, seven-seater, two variants, RM109,800-RM123,800

Announced as inbound earlier this month, Sime Darby Beyond Auto has officially launched the BYD M6 in Malaysia, with the MPV becoming the fourth BYD electric vehicle (EV) to go on sale here. The M6 arrives here as a fully-imported CBU model and is being offered in two variants.

These are the M6 Standard, which goes for RM109,800 and the M6 Extended, which is priced at RM123,800. Unlike other regional markets such as Indonesia and Thailand, Malaysia will only get one seating configuration for the model, and that’s the one with seven seats.

Measuring in at 4,710 mm long, 1,810 mm wide and 1,690 mm tall, with a 2,800 mm-long wheelbase, the M6 – essentially a revised version of the e6 – is closer in size to the Toyota Innova Zenix than the Veloz. Styling-wise, the M6 features a much sharper-looking front end, with a full-width silver bar (housing the BYD script) linking the revised multi-projector LED headlights. These sit above a wing-shaped bumper insert that ties neatly into the slim air intakes and chrome accents.

At the back, you’ll find handsome full-width taillights that integrate a slimmer, more subtle chrome strip, and the rear badging is now made up of a simple BYD logo. Both variants are equipped with similar wheels, in this case 17-inch Star Speed Y-spoke alloy units, wrapped with 225/55 profile tyres.

As for battery capacity, power outputs and performance, the Standard features a 55.4 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that powers a front-mounted electric motor, which offers 163 PS (161 hp or 120 kW) and 310 Nm in the way of output. This is good for a NEDC-rated range of 420 km and a 0-100 km/h time of 10.1 seconds.

The Extended gets a larger 71.8 kWh battery, which provides up to 530 km of travel (NEDC), and its motor has a higher power output, delivering 204 PS (201 hp or 150 kW) – similar to that seen on the Atto 3 – to bring the century sprint time down to 8.6 seconds. Torque remains identical, at 310 Nm. As for top speed, it’s 180 km/h, regardless of variant.

In terms of actual range, the NEDC rating should translate to a WLTP range closer to 360 km for the Standard, and about 450 km for the Extended, but given it uses an LFP battery, the M6 can be charged to 100% for regular use, so you can use the full range at all times without having to worry about battery degradation.

Other relevant numbers are a kerb weight of 1,800 kg for the Standard and 1,915 kg for the Extended, a ground clearance of 170 mm and a boot space of 180 litres with the rear-most seats up; folding them down increases available volume to 580 litres.

Inside, the cabin retains the general layout first presented with the e6, but alters some elements, including the switch to a standard gear selector from a rotary unit and an increase in the size of the centre screen display from 10.1 inches to 12.8 inches (which is the same size as the Dolphin’s), The latter is also now powered and can rotate to offer a horizontal or vertical presentation.

Standard specifications include faux leather upholstery, analogue instrument gauges (with a five-inch TFT multi-info display), keyless entry, push-button start, an NFC key card, automatic air-conditioning, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a six-speaker audio system and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity.

Also on the standard equipment list is a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, cruise control, a PM 2.5 air filter, an electronic parking brake, brake auto hold and a portable charging cable. The M6 also supports a karaoke microphone function, offering the chance to belt out tunes (with full access to lyrics) when the vehicle is stationary, with the aid of an optional microphone.

The Extended naturally improves on the kit count, adding on bits such as a panoramic glass roof, six-way driver/four-way front passenger power-adjustable ventilated front seats (manual on the Standard), a Qi wireless mobile charger, a roof rack, alloy pedals, a powered tailgate and automatic high-beam control for the headlights.

Safety-wise, the M6 comes with six airbags (front, side, side curtain), stability control, traction control, a 360-degree camera system and rear parking sensors, among others.

To get the full ADAS suite of driver assistance systems, which adds on items such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, emergency lane keeping assist and a door opening warning, you’ll have to opt for the Extended.

The BYD M6 is available in four exterior colours, these being Crystal White, Ink Stone Blue, Cosmos Black and Harbour Grey, while the interior is presented in a black/brown scheme. It comes with a six-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000 km (with a state-of-health above 70%) battery warranty and an eight-year/150,000 km drive unit warranty.

  • 2024 BYD M6 launching in Malaysia on Oct 15 – EV MPV with up to 7 seats, 204 PS, 530 km NEDC range

2024 BYD M6 launching in Malaysia on Oct 15 – EV MPV with up to 7 seats, 204 PS, 530 km NEDC range

BYD Malaysia has confirmed the launch of the BYD M6 on October 15, 2024. The electric MPV is already on sale in Indonesia since July, with Thailand following soon after in September, and it won’t be too long before it’s our turn.

The M6 is essentially a revised version of the second-generation e6 and is available with a selection of powertrains. It hasn’t been confirmed exactly what we’re getting but we can reference our neighbours for some idea.

In Indonesia, the M6 comes in three variants priced between 379 million and 429 million rupiah (about RM103k and RM117k). The entry-level Standard (7 Seater) features a 55.4-kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that powers a front-mounted electric motor with 163 PS (161 hp or 120 kW) and 310 Nm of torque. This is good for a NEDC-rated range of 420 km and a 0-100 km/h time of 10.1 seconds.

The remaining two variants are the Superior (7 Seater) and Superior Captain (6 Seater), both of which get a larger 71.8-kWh battery for 530 km of range (NEDC) and a higher specific output of 204 PS (201 hp or 150 kW) to lower the century sprint time to 8.6 seconds.

The M6 can accept up to 89 kW of DC fast charging, or up to 115 kW for the Superior, the latter taking 40 minutes to charge the battery from 10 to 80%. Meanwhile, AC charging is limited to 7 kW for all variants.

Shifting over to Thailand, the M6 retails for between 829,900 and 929,900 baht (RM106k and RM119k), with two variants on offer. The base Dynamic has nearly same powertrain specifications as Indonesia’s Standard (7 Seater), albeit with a slightly lower peak DC charging capacity of 85 kW, while the top-spec Extended matches the Superior duo.

We can expect Malaysia to get at least two variants, although nothing has been officially revealed for now. Thankfully, it’s only a week to go before we get up close with the M6, so stay tuned for more updates.

  • 2024 BYD M6 EV coming to Malaysia soon – all-electric MPV with up to 204 PS/310 Nm, 530 km NEDC range

2024 BYD M6 EV coming to Malaysia soon – all-electric MPV with up to 204 PS/310 Nm, 530 km NEDC range

Following its Southeast Asian debut in Indonesia back in July, you could tell that it was only a matter of time before the BYD M6 was announced for other regional markets. That happened soon enough, with Thailand becoming the next destination for the fully-electric MPV earlier this month. Now, it’s our turn, with the M6 also set to go on sale soon in Malaysia.

That the M6 – essentially a revised version of the e6 – is inbound and due to get its market debut likely in the coming month is all we know for now, as there is no indication as to the variants and specifications we’ll be getting.

It remains to be seen if we’ll get seven-seater and six-seater versions like in Indonesia, where the MPV is priced from 379 million rupiah (RM109,500) to 429 million rupiah (RM123,900), or whether only the six-seat configuration will be offered, as it is in Thailand, where it is priced from 829,900 baht (RM106,800) to 929,900 baht (RM119,600).

2024 BYD M6 EV coming to Malaysia soon – all-electric MPV with up to 204 PS/310 Nm, 530 km NEDC range

What is very likely is that there will be two variants forms, with different outputs. In both Indonesia and Thailand, the M6 is available in two states of power outputs.

On the base model (known as the Dynamic in Thailand), this is 163 PS (120 kW) and 310 Nm, which is a bump up from the 95 PS (70 kW) and 180 Nm seen on the e6. For the Extended (known as the Superior in Indonesia), the power is similar to that seen on the Atto 3 SUV, with 204 PS (150 kW) on tap. Performance figures include a 0-100 km/h time of 10.1 and 8.6 seconds respectively.

Juice for the motor is provided by the automaker’s Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which on the base version is a 55.4 kWh unit capable of providing an NEDC-rated range of 420 km. Meanwhile, the higher output version gets the larger 71.8 kWh (as seen on the e6), and this is good for up to 530 km of NEDC-rated travel on a single charge.

In terms of charging, the M6 can accept up to 85 kW of DC fast charging, or up to 115 kW for the Extended, with the latter taking 40 minutes to get the battery from a 10 to 80% state-of-charge. As for AC charging, its limited to 7 kW regardless of variant.

Styling-wise, the M6 has been given a neat nip-and-tuck job, with changes led by a switch to the brand’s latest corporate face, with a full-width silver bar (incorporating the BYD script) linking the revised multi-projector LED headlights. These sit above a wing-shaped bumper insert that ties neatly into the slim air intakes and lower chrome flourish elements.

At the back, the M6 gets full-width tail lamps that integrate a slimmer, more subtle chrome strip and a BYD lettering badge, along with a chrome strip around the lower perimeter to dress up things further. The electric MPV rides on 17-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels in both Indonesia and Thailand, so we can expect to see the same here.

2024 BYD M6 EV coming to Malaysia soon – all-electric MPV with up to 204 PS/310 Nm, 530 km NEDC range

Inside, you’ll find minor changes from the e6, with the most visible being the switch to a wood-effect dash trim and a redesigned centre console. The latter ditches the rotary knob seen previously for a stubby gear selector. The centre touchscreen has also gone up in size from 10.1 to 12.8 inches and can now rotate to offer both horizontal and vertical orientation perspectives.

Standard equipment includes keyless entry, push-button start, an NFC key card, automatic air-conditioning, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, cruise control, faux leather upholstery, a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, a 360-degree camera system and a six-speaker audio system. The higher output variant adds on kit such as roof rails, a panoramic glass roof, power-adjustable ventilated front seats, Qi wireless charging and a powered tailgate.

Safety-wise, the M6 comes with six airbags, stability control and a door opening warning, along with driver assistance kit such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist. Emergency lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic with auto brake and door opening warning are exclusive to the higher output variant.
