MG S5 EV receives five-star safety rating from ANCAP

The MG S5 EV has received a five-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), applicable to all variants sold in Australia (since May 2025) and New Zealand (from July 2025). The electric SUV was recently launched in Malaysia and is available in three variants with pricing from RM116,548 to RM136,548 on-the-road without insurance.

Referring to ANCAP’s report, the S5 EV scored 90% in the adult occupant protection category, scoring well in the full width frontal, side impact, oblique pole, whiplash protection and far side impact tests. The EV also achieved a score of 86% in the child occupant protection category, although the lack of a child presence detection system did result in some docked points in terms of onboard safety features.

Moving on, the S5 EV managed a score of 82% for vulnerable road user protection, with ANCAP noting the vehicle was effective in responding to pedestrians and cyclists. In emergency autonomous emergency braking (AEB) test scenarios, the S5 EV showed good responsiveness, although AEB performance in reverse was deemed marginal.

As for the safety assist category, the S5 EV received a score of 79% thanks to features such as AEB, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, speed assist, a fatigue-detecting driver monitoring system and seatbelt reminder system for all seating positions.

“Following a series of mixed safety outcomes for MG in recent times, the addition of this new five-star model is encouraging. It reinforces MG’s ability to meet the highest safety standards, and we look forward to seeing this level of commitment carry through to future new model releases,” said Carla Hoorweg, CEO of ANCAP.

2025 MG S5 EV launched in Malaysia – 49 or 62 kWh, up to 430 km range, eMas 7/Atto 3 rival from RM111k

You’ve read about the MG S5 EV, and saw the electric SUV at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2025, where MG Motor Malaysia revealed the EV’s variants and launch package, but not the actual price. Now, here’s the final piece of the jigsaw from the S5’s official launch.

The electric SUV rival to the Proton eMas 7 and BYD Atto 3 is priced from RM116,548 for the base Com 49 kWh, rising to RM126,548 for the Com Long Range with a 62 kWh battery. The range-topping Lux Long Range with the same 62 kWh battery is yours for RM136,548. All figures are on-the-road without insurance.

The S5 EV’s previously reported launch package had a RM5,000 discount and a complimentary 7kW wallbox for home charging. At today’s launch, MG announced a boosted cash rebate of RM6,000 with the free wallbox for the first 500 buyers.

2025 MG S5 EV launched in Malaysia – 49 or 62 kWh, up to 430 km range, eMas 7/Atto 3 rival from RM111k

This means that the price for early birds is RM110,548 for the Com 49 kWh, RM120,548 for the Com 62 kWh and RM130,548 for the Lux 62 kWh – RM10k increments, basically. For quick reference, the Proton eMas 7 is priced from RM109,800 to RM123,800, while the BYD Atto 3 Ultra retails for RM123,800 (ongoing promo brings it down to RM118,800). Competitive!

To recap, the base Com offers a choice of 49 kWh or 62 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, good for WLTP rated range of 340 km and 430 km respectively. The Lux is exclusively paired to the 62 kWh battery. All have a rear motor with 170 PS (125 kW) and 250 Nm of torque – MG stresses that the S5 is the only rear-wheel-drive EV in its class. Rear multi-link suspension, if you must know.

Our powertrain and battery specs are similar to what Australia gets, but Thailand has a range-topper with a more powerful 245 PS/350 Nm motor, juiced by a 64 kWh NMC battery for 550 km of NEDC range.

As for charging, max rates are 7 kW AC and 120 kW DC, with the Lux taking the latter to 150 kW, a rate that enables 10-80% SoC top ups in 26 minutes. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is available to power your appliances. There are three levels of ‘KERS’, MG’s name for regen, and single-pedal mode.

2025 MG S5 EV launched in Malaysia – 49 or 62 kWh, up to 430 km range, eMas 7/Atto 3 rival from RM111k

Standard kit include LED headlamps with ‘Racing Flag’ themed DRLs, a rear LED light bar that grows ‘wings’ at the sides, 17-inch black alloys (Kumho Solus), electronic parking brake with auto hold, single-zone automatic air con with rear vents (export market dash has physical AC controls, unlike the China market ES5) wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with voice command, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, reverse camera and MG’s iSmart app connectivity.

The Com Long Range adds on leather-fabric seats with perforated MG logos (full fabric on the Com) and a six-way powered driver’s seat with manual lumbar.

Go for the Lux and you’ll get 18-inch two-tone alloys (Bridgestone Turanza T005), power folding wing mirrors, panoramic sunroof, leather steering wheel, wireless phone charging pad, rear centre armrest and reading lamps, six speakers (from four), auto wipers, powered tailgate with kick sensor and a 360-degree surround view camera. Safety wise, it’s seven airbags and a full ADAS pack with auto high beam and tyre pressure monitoring across the range, which is good.

At 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide and 1,621 mm tall, the S5 is 139 mm shorter, 52 mm narrower and 49 mm lower than the Proton eMas 7 and has a 20 mm shorter wheelbase. It’s slightly larger than the BYD Atto 3, though. There’s no frunk, but the 453-litre boot can be expanded to 1,441 litres with the rear seats folded, including the space under the boot floor.

Five colours are available – Arctic White, Monument Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red and Elegant Latte. The latter is an exclusive tone for the Lux Long Range. The factory warranty is seven years or 150,000 km for the vehicle, eight years or 180,000 km for the EV battery and eight years or 160,000 km for the drive motor and motor control unit.

“With the official pricing now revealed, the MG S5 EV represents one of the best value propositions in the electric SUV segment. It’s not just about affordability, it’s about delivering advanced EV technology, spacious design, and premium features at a highly accessible price point. We’re excited to offer Malaysian customers a compelling EV choice that doesn’t compromise on performance, practicality or style,” said Emory QiFeng, MD of SAIC Motor Malaysia.

So, what do you think of the MG S5 EV’s looks and package next to the eMas 7 and Atto 3? Even if you’re set on one of those, surely there’s no harm checking out a compatriot in the same price bracket? Try out the S5 EV for size at MG’s ‘Dare to Love’ roadshow, happening at Mid Valley Megamall’s centre court from today till May 25 (Sunday). Test drives are available.

Many expected MG Motor Malaysia to launch the MG S5 EV at the just-concluded Malaysia Autoshow 2025. The electric SUV rival to the Proton eMas 7 and BYD Atto 3 was there, but they weren’t quite ready for a launch. They are now – countdown-style teasers have gone up, stating a launch date of May 20 at Mid Valley Megamall, where the brand will have a five-day roadshow.

“The countdown starts now. In just 5 days, we’re dropping the best-in-class British driving machine, and you’ll want to be in the front row. See it. Feel it. Drive it,” the caption reads. The post went up yesterday evening, so five days more means May 20.

At MAS 2025, MG revealed the S5 EV’s launch package to go with the earlier announced estimated price of from RM115,000. Those who place a booking with RM500 will get ’10 times more savings’, which means that the early bird discount is RM5,000 off the eventual RRP. The package also includes a complimentary 7kW wallbox for home charging.

The MG S5 EV, which was previewed last month, is the main star of MG’s Malaysia Autoshow (MAS) 2025 stand here at MAEPS. However, the rival to the Proton eMas 7 and BYD Atto 3 isn’t quite ready to be launched yet. That will happen very soon, but MG Motor Malaysia is providing more info this round.

We already know that the estimated price for the EV is from RM115,000; now we know what the early birds will get. Place a booking at MAS 2025 from May 9-15 with a fee of RM500 and you’ll get ’10 times more savings’, which means that the early bird discount is RM5,000 off the eventual RRP. MG S5 EV previewed in Malaysia – RWD Proton eMas 7, BYD Atto 3 rival, up to 430 km range, fr RM115k est

Spotted in Malaysia earlier this week, the MG S5 has now been previewed ahead of its launch. The electric C-segment SUV replaces the underwhelming ZS EV and takes the fight to the Proton eMas 7 and BYD Atto 3. Estimated pricing is listed at RM115,000, but if recent experience is to go by expect the final figure to be a little lower, with a launch discount thrown on top of that.

Measuring 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide and 1,621 mm tall, the S5 is 153 mm longer, 40 mm wider and four millimetres lower than the ZS EV, while its 2,730 mm wheelbase is 149 mm longer. Next to the eMas 7, the MG is 139 mm shorter, 52 mm narrower and 49 mm lower and has a 20 mm shorter wheelbase; it’s also slightly larger than the Atto 3.

The S5 is powered by a single rear motor that produces 170 PS (125 kW) and 250 Nm of torque, with MG Motor Malaysia claiming it can get from zero to 100 km/h in as low as eight seconds flat. This is juiced by a 49 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that provides a WLTP-rated range of 340 km. The car accepts up to 120 kW of DC fast charging – topping up the battery from 10 to 80% charge in 24 minutes – but only 6.6 kW of AC charging.

MG S5 EV previewed in Malaysia – RWD Proton eMas 7, BYD Atto 3 rival, up to 430 km range, fr RM115k est

Long-range models gain a 62.2 kWh LFP battery that increases the range to 430 km. A jump in maximum DC fast charging input to 150 kW enables the pack to be topped up from 10 to 80% charge in 26 minutes, despite its larger capacity.

Aside from a shift from front- to rear-wheel drive, the S5 also benefits from five-link independent rear suspension, replacing the ZS EV’s torsion beam setup. The car also possesses a turning circle of just 4.99 metres and XDS torque vectoring by braking.

The S5 is a far more striking vehicle to look at compared to its predecessor, with a sharp front end that features split LED headlights – the upper “eyebrows” incorporating chequered flag-inspired daytime running lights – and a split centre air intake with an active shutter. The rear end, meanwhile, sports full-width taillights with distinctive T-shaped corners. In Malaysia, the base 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard.

MG S5 EV previewed in Malaysia – RWD Proton eMas 7, BYD Atto 3 rival, up to 430 km range, fr RM115k est

Inside, the S5 takes after the MG4 hatch with similar joystick-like controls for the three-spoke oblong steering wheel (the MG4 uses a two-spoke tiller), a layered dashboard dashboard, a freestanding 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen and a tall centre console with a rotary gear selector. Unique to this car is a row of physical buttons and knobs for the climate control and volume, sitting between the touchscreen and centre air vents – this is not found in the Chinese-market ES5.

Other features include a 10.25-inch instrument display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Qi wireless charger, powered leather-and-fabric seats with unique “MG” perforation, a panoramic glass sunroof, a 360-degree camera system, a powered tailgate and a 6 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.

The S5 is claimed to have a class-leading 1,026 mm of headroom at the front and 997 mm at the rear, along with a 453 litres of space. You can also fold down the rear seats to expand the total luggage room to 1,441 litres. No front boot, unfortunately.

Safety-wise, the S5 comes with a full complement of driver assists such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring with collision prevention, rear cross traffic alert with auto brake, traffic sign recognition and auto high beam. Available colours include Arctic White, Monument Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red and a new Elegant Latte.

MG Malaysia has teased the MG S5 EV that we showed you from the 2025 Bangkok International Motor Show. A teaser image on Instagram zooms in on the electric SUV’s LED daytime running lights and says “A look like no other. Something new is coming. Register your interest now.”

The RoI page reveals the MG S5 EV’s identity. “A ride that redefines electric driving. A thrill that stays true to our British heritage. Something bold, something electrifying, something more to love just for you,” the company describes.

The page shares a few highlights of the S5 such as the SUV’s LED signatures front and back (‘racing flag’ DRLs, ‘family arch’ rear LEDs), DC fast charging rate (up to 150 kW, 10-80% SoC in below 30 minutes), slim battery, rear-wheel-drive layout (like the MG4, no dual-motor AWD option), active intake grille, panoramic sunroof and 18-inch alloys.

Highlighted interior features include leather and fabric combination seats with ‘MG’ perforated pattern, a 12.8-inch central touchscreen with a row of physical buttons for the AC, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and up to 1,441 litres of boot space. “Stay tuned for our exclusive launch offer this May,” MG says, which means that we’re a month away from the S5 EV’s launch.

Let’s recap what we saw in Thailand. At 4,476 mm long and 1,849 wide, the ‘MG4 SUV’ is 21 mm longer and 26 mm narrower than the sales-leading BYD Atto 3. The MG’s 2,730 mm wheelbase is 10 mm longer than the BYD’s, and it’s also slightly taller, so we’re looking at the same ballpark. Boot volume is 452 litres, expandable to 1,441 litres with the rear seats folded.

There, the base Standard Range powertrain has a motor at the rear making 170 PS (125 kW) and 250 Nm of torque, good for 0-100 km/h in 8.0 seconds. The battery is a 50 kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) unit and claimed range is 416 km in the easier NEDC standard. Max charging rates are 11 kW AC and 88 kW DC, and there’s a 6 kW V2L function to power your accessories.

The Long Range gets a more powerful motor (245 PS or 180 kW, 350 Nm, also RWD) and a bigger 64 kWh battery. This one is a lithium-ion NMC-type battery that’s good for 550 km range in the NEDC. 0-100 km/h is done in 6.1 seconds, so it’s a big jump from the SR in speed and range. As for charging, the LR’s max rate is 11 kW AC and 140 kW DC and getting from 10-80% SoC takes less than 30 minutes, as highlighted by MG Malaysia.

Kit wise, the Thai-spec S5 has pretty much what you’d expect from a Chinese EV of this price – 18-inch wheels, LED everything, power boot, synthetic leather seats in black-grey (ventilation for high spec) and six-way powered front seats.

Thais also get a 10.25-inch digital meter panel, 12.8-inch centre touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 3D surround view camera, wireless charger and a PM2.5 filter for the air con. Full ADAS pack too, of course.

MG S5 EV at BIMS 2025 – click to enlarge

There, the MG S5 EV is available in four colours – black, grey, white and the special Beige Champagne Titanium we shot – and the price range is from 719,900 to 899,900 baht, which is RM93,628 to RM117,068.

Although we have a RM100k minimum price for CBU imported EVs, that’s the price range of the Proton eMas 7 (RM105,800, to RM119,800), which prompted the BYD Atto 3 (RM123,800) and Chery Omoda E5 (RM119,818 but for 2024 units) to lower their RRPs to compete.

There’s not a whole lot to separate these Chinese EV SUVs in terms of tech and specs (click on the links above to revisit the Proton/Geely, BYD and Chery), so it’s more a matter of the brand, design and of course, price. Assuming that MG Malaysia can price the S5 EV at around RM120k, what do you think of the car’s design and package? Browse the gallery below and share your thoughts.
