Geely EX5 gets lifetime battery warranty in Indonesia

Geely Auto Indonesia has a new promotion for the Geely EX5, but it’s not a price cut like in Thailand. Instead, the Proton eMas 7 twin gets an ‘EXceptional Value Deals’ package that includes lifetime battery warranty.

There are terms and conditions attached to the lifetime battery warranty, of course. For one, there’s a mileage cap of 30,000 km a year, which translates to an average use of 2,500 km a month – as EVs are unlikely to be heavily used for long distance driving, this shouldn’t be much of an issue. You’ll get a battery change if state of health falls below 70%.

The warranty is also reserved for the first owner of the EX5. This means that it’s not transferable, and the EV will not become ‘more valuable’ as a second-hand car. Battery aside, the Geely EX5 comes with an eight-year or 180,000 km warranty for the electric motor and motor control system. There’s also free emergency roadside assistance for five years.

Apart from warranties, the promo package also includes a free portable charger, a 7 kW wallbox or OEM accessories package, front seats with massage function and adjustable leg rest, and exclusive colour options for the top-spec Max variant. There’s more – 0% interest rates for one year (or subsidy on home charger installation) and 2GB of free data for two years.

Launched in January this year, the Geely EX5 comes in two variants for the republic – the Rp 475 juta (RM123,952) Pro and the Rp 515 juta (RM134,390) Max. Both come with a front electric motor rated at 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm, paired to a 60.22 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The quoted NEDC range is 495 km for the Pro and 490 km for the Max.

Trial production of the EV started in May at contract manufacturer PT Handal Indonesia Motor’s plant in Purwakarta, with mass production targeted for Q4 2025. Geely said that it plans to launch between five and seven models in Indonesia over the next three years, including full EVs, plug-in hybrids and ICE-powered models.

For those who aren’t yet convinced by EVs, would a lifetime battery warranty programme like this sway you?

  • Geely to enter UK in fourth quarter of 2025 with EX5 EV SUV – Proton eMas 7 twin to get ‘Handling by Lotus’?

Geely to enter UK in fourth quarter of 2025 with EX5 EV SUV – Proton eMas 7 twin to get ‘Handling by Lotus’?

The Brits love their handling, and doesn’t Geely know it. The Chinese giant is going to enter the UK in the fourth quarter of this year with the EX5 (or Galaxy E5 or Proton eMas 7 depending on where you’re from), and the EV SUV may get Lotus-tuned handling thanks to a collaboration with Lotus Engineering, reports various British publications including Car Magazine and Top Gear.

“We know the Geely EX5 is a great product with several core features that will appeal to a British audience. That’s why we chose it to be our first passenger car for sale in the UK. However, we’re aware that UK customers have unique demands,” said Geely Auto UK boss Mike Yang.

“For that reason, before we release the car for sale, we’re working with the experts at Lotus Engineering to make sure we have a car that’s in line with expectations. Lotus Engineering has a formidable track record along with some of the best R&D resources, so we’re delighted to be working closely with them.”

Geely to enter UK in fourth quarter of 2025 with EX5 EV SUV – Proton eMas 7 twin to get ‘Handling by Lotus’?

Lotus Engineering is a division within Lotus that provides engineering and consultancy services to other automotive manufacturers to carry out engineering work including suspension and handling tuning – think Isuzu Piazza, Lotus Cortina and Lotus Carlton/Omega, besides the string of Protons we grew up with. Proton owned Lotus from 1996 to 2017.

This Euro NCAP, ANCAP and ASEAN NCAP five-star EV SUV (no matter what name it goes by) was apparently co-developed with Proton. Geely said last year that global-market models will use Proton-tuned suspension, but it was reported earlier this year that Australia would get its own tuning – and now, Britain.

UK specs are not known yet, but they shouldn’t differ much from the rest of the world. In Thailand, the range-topping EX5 Max just had its price cut to 899k baht (RM117k) after a series of reductions from the original 989k baht (RM129k). Proton recently said it won’t be joining the price war in Malaysia in a bid to protect resale values – even though it arguably started the war in the first place by significantly undercutting the BYD Atto 3. It has, however, decided to make the RM4,000 ‘early bird discount’ permanent.

  • 2025 Proton eMas 7 gets new Obsidian Black exterior, Alabaster White interior options, OTA Apple CarPlay

2025 Proton eMas 7 gets new Obsidian Black exterior, Alabaster White interior options, OTA Apple CarPlay

The Proton X50 facelift may be on everyone’s lips today, but Proton’s Pro-Net division has something to unveil too – this is the updated 2025 Proton eMas 7, which comes with a couple of meaningful changes from the electric SUV that surfaced late last year and has since gone on to top the EV sales chart. The changes are ‘guided by real owner feedback’.

First up, no, this is not the CKD locally-assembled eMas 7, as Proton’s EV plant at its Tanjong Malim base for that purpose is only scheduled to be ready by end-2025. As it was since day one, the updated EV is a CBU import from China.

With that cleared, let’s move to the changes. The Proton eMas 7 is now equipped with (wired and wireless) Apple CarPlay. Yes, iOS users, you can finally say goodbye to that unsightly phone holder, which has no place in a car with such screen acreage. The X70 facelift was the first Proton model to receive Apple Carplay in October 2024 (via OTA, car was launched in August 2024) and in April this year, Proton’s over-the-air (OTA) roadmap for the eMas 7 pointed to July for Apple CarPlay. We’re now in July and here it is. Android user feeling left out? Android Auto connectivity will appear in Q4 2024.

AACP aside, the Flyme Auto operating system now offers better responsiveness, smoother integration, and support for more third party apps, Pro-Net says. The apps include Zoom for Cars, izi.Travel and Vivaldi Browser. More significantly, the OTA update will allow drivers to retain their last-used settings; currently, drivers have to manually adjust certain settings at the start of each drive.

Also, the updated eMas 7 will have updates to its EV low speed pedestrian warning system. If you don’t already know, EVs are designed to emit an artificial sound at low speeds so that pedestrians will be aware of their presence, and the eMas 7’s soundtrack is akin to an ice-cream truck’s jingle. It’s very much audible in an otherwise silent cabin – probably the most intrusive we’ve encountered in an EV.

Now, this sound can be switched off (manually, each time you start up), and there are two more new tones that are presumably more subtle than the ‘Classical’ ice-cream truck music – Galactic Note and Space Walk. Once selected, the chosen melody remains in memory for the next vehicle start-up. The OTA will be rolling out from July 21.

2025 Proton eMas 7 gets new Obsidian Black exterior, Alabaster White interior options, OTA Apple CarPlay

Next up, we have colours. The eMas 7 was launched with Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Lithium White and Quartz Rose colour options – now, Obsidian Black joins the list. In May, we noted that black is an option for the eMas 7 in Singapore (called Moyu Black there), and it’s now available here too.

While the rather nice Indigo Blue interior (appears black most of the time) remains default, Pro-Net is offering an Alabaster White interior option for the Quartz Rose and Turquoise Green exterior colours of the Premium. Limited to 250 units each, here’s a chance to have a slightly different eMas 7 – at the same price.

Last but definitely not least in terms of daily practicality, the eMas 7 will now come standard with a tonneau cover that Pro-Net says is worth RM300. A glaring omission at launch, existing owners soon will receive the tonneau cover free of charge – updates to come.

2025 Proton eMas 7 gets new Obsidian Black exterior, Alabaster White interior options, OTA Apple CarPlay

No changes in price, which is RM105,800 for the Prime and RM119,800 for the Premium on-the-road excluding insurance, inclusive of a RM4,000 ‘Welcome Benefit’. Pro-Net is also offering a new ‘Power Pack+’ sales package that includes a free 7kW wallbox home charger worth RM1,500, a complimentary V2L adaptor worth RM500, five-years of unlimited internet data worth RM1,800 and a ‘power exchange’ trade-in rebate worth RM5,000. The latter is open to all makes and models.

The car comes with a six-year unlimited mileage warranty for the vehicle, plus an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty for the EV battery.

Both variants share a front-mounted electric motor with 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque, propelling the fastest-accelerating Proton ever to from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds (7.1 seconds for the Premium). Top speed is 175 km/h.

As per the Geely Galaxy E5, Prime uses a 49.52 kWh version of Geely’s Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a WLTP-rated range of 345 km. The Premium’s 60.22 kWh pack delivers 410 km. Both support AC charging at a max rate of 11 kW but the max DC rate differs – 80 kW for the Prime and 100 kW for the Premium. Both can get from 30-80% SoC in 20 minutes (note the 30% base Proton uses). Home charging via the AC wallbox takes 4.9 hours for the Prime and 6.1 hours for the Premium.

2025 Proton eMas 7 gets new Obsidian Black exterior, Alabaster White interior options, OTA Apple CarPlay

Speaking of charging, the eMas 7 – like its Pro-Net siblings from the smart brand – has live charging map integration in its infotainment system, featuring over 1,700 chargers or 85% of all chargers in Malaysia, and you’ll get real-time info such as gun availability and pricing too.

Kit highlights include a 10.2-inch digital instrument display and a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen running on Geely’s latest Flyme Auto operating system, as well as the Premium’s 16-speaker Flyme Sound system. And for the first time on a Proton, the eMas 7 comes as standard with a full suite of driver assistance features, including Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

The eMas 7 is a lot of car for the money (literally too; the C-segment SUV is 89 mm longer and 70 mm wider than the Proton X70, and Proton claims D-segment space), and these changes should further enhance its popularity. Check out our full review here.

  • Proton eMas 7 teaser posted – spec update, AACP?

Proton eMas 7 teaser posted – spec update, AACP?

Proton eMas yesterday posted this teaser on its Facebook page – it’s clearly an eMas 7, which has been largely dominating the EV sales charts in Malaysia since its December launch. Could it be the locally-assembled (CKD) version? And is it really coming in a couple days’ time?

If it is, that’s almost too soon to be true – after all, Proton only announced in February that it had started construction of its EV plant in Tanjong Malim, and that the CKD eMas 7 would only be out by year-end.

One possibility is Android Auto/Apple CarPlay (AACP) integration, which was not available at launch. This is more likely, as we understand that the over-the-air (OTA) update for this would arrive in July. Currently, only the X70 facelift has AACP.

Another possibility is a special edition, though given the eMas 7’s currentness, we think this is a hundred-to-one shot. Yet another possibility, which is just as likely as AACP, is a spec update, maybe in response to the BYD Atto 3 Ultra‘s ‘spec-up, price-down’ assault. Anyhow, all will be revealed in two days!

  • Proton eMas 7 gets software update to drop ice cream sound, only at service centres; still no Apple CarPlay

Proton eMas 7 gets software update to drop ice cream sound, only at service centres; still no Apple CarPlay

An owner of the Proton eMas 7 reported that the EV has been given a software update when it completed a service centre visit, which has appeared to have removed the ice cream truck sound, according to a post on Proton eMas 7 Community Malaysia Facebook page.

In February, it emerged that Proton had been working on alternatives to the ice-cream truck jingle, including to having it switched off. This was originally put in place to comply with UN ECE regulations, and according to the vehicle owner who posted to the owners’ community Facebook group, the sound has been removed, except for a more subdued sound when reversing.

Meanwhile, the over-the-air (OTA) rollout of Apple CarPlay is likely to still adhere to the previously announced timeline of July for its deployment, access to third-party apps, radio scanning fix and more. This will be followed by Android Auto in December.

Launched in December 2024, the Proton eMas 7 made its debut in two variants – Prime and Premium – each with a front-mounted electric motor producing 218 PS and 320 Nm. This powertrain propels Proton’s first electric SUV from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 175 km/h.

The Prime brings a 49.52 kWh battery offering 345 km of range while the Premium packs a 60.022 kWh unit that is good for 410 km (both on the WLTP testing standard); both are the Geely Aegis short-blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

  • Proton eMas 7 EV SUV now in Trinidad and Tobago – Caribbean nation is second export market after Nepal

Proton eMas 7 EV SUV now in Trinidad and Tobago – Caribbean nation is second export market after Nepal

The Proton eMas 7 is now in Trinidad and Tobago. The dual-island Caribbean nation is the second international market for the EV and this comes three months after its international debut in Nepal. Launched in Malaysia in December 2024, the eMas 7 is now Proton’s third most popular export model after the Saga and X50.

Proton’s local partner in T&T is Ansa Motors, which has been the brand’s official distributor since 2013. In conjunction with the eMas 7 launch, Ansa unveiled a new EV showroom at The City of Grand Bazaar. By the way, while the cars are CBU China units, exports models are shipped from Malaysia. Once CKD operations start in Tanjung Malim by the end of the year, the journey to T&T won’t be so long, although CKD packs will still come from China.

The eMas 7 isn’t Proton’s first SUV in T&T – the X50 and X90 were exported there last year. To-date, 481 units of Protons have landed in the country, which has a population of approximately 1.4 million. These include 271 units of the X50, 141 units of the seven-seater X90 and 44 units of the Saga.

Proton eMas 7 EV SUV now in Trinidad and Tobago – Caribbean nation is second export market after Nepal

“Proton’s journey with the eMas 7 into the Trinidadian market is a significant moment for the company. It strongly reflects our commitment to leading the adoption of EVs in the nation and marks another pivotal step in our international expansion. This also clearly demonstrates Proton’s dedication to leading the charge for EV adoption in our export portfolio and we can’t wait to roll it out to additional export markets such as Mauritius and Singapore later this year,” said Edmund Lim Meng Thong, director of Proton International Sales Division.

The eMas 7 for the T&T market is the Premium, which has a 60.22-kWh Geely Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a WLTP-rated range of 410 km. Powered by a 218 PS/320 Nm front-mounted electric motor, 0-100 km/h is done in 7.1 seconds. In Malaysia, there’s an entry Prime variant with a 49.52-kWh battery and 345 km range.

The eMas 7, which is leading the local EV sales table, is priced at RM109,800 for the Prime and RM123,800 for Premium. Full review in the video below.

Proton eMas 7 sales – 916 units delivered in May, YTD now 3,632 units; export to Trinidad and Tobago soon

As if consistently topping Malaysia’s EV sales monthly wasn’t enough, last month was the Proton eMas 7‘s best sales month ever since its December launch. The carmaker sold 916 units (including exports) of its first EV in May 2025, pushing its year-to-date (YTD) total to 3,632 units, including 233 units overseas.

April was previously the zero-emissions SUV’s best sales month (863 units), with Pro-Net then saying that one Malaysian bought an eMas 7 every hour – this amusing statistic should be fractionally better for May.

Pro-Net said in a release that the eMas 7 is Malaysia’s fastest-selling EV, and the Integrated Live Charging Map (both in-car and on the app) now has over 2,500 public charging locations, offering over 90% coverage nationwide. Also, 44 Proton eMas dealerships have been appointed, with 32 already operating, and six more 3S centres will open soon for 30 in total.

Proton has also announced that the eMas 7 will be introduced in Trinidad and Tobago next – as soon as this month. So far, Nepal is the car’s only export market (there was a preview in Singapore last month). Other possible markets are Mauritius and Brunei, though we have no indication of when yet.

In Malaysia, the eMas 7 is priced at RM109,800 for the base Prime and RM123,800 for the Premium; a RM4,000 discount for the first 6,000 buyers drops those figures to RM105,800 and RM119,800 respectively. Both variants have a 218 PS/320 Nm front-mounted electric motor and do 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

The difference is in the Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery‘s capacities – the Prime gets a 49.52 kWh pack with a WLTP-rated range of 345 km, while the Premium’s larger 60.22 kWh pack enables it to travel up to 410 km on a single charge.

And while on the subject of batteries – Geely recently ran a 36-tonne tank over the battery used in the Galaxy E5 – which is the eMas 7’s twin – to demonstrate its safety. More on that stunt here.

  • Geely Galaxy E5/Proton eMas 7 battery withstands tank crush test, exceeding China testing standards

Geely Galaxy E5/Proton eMas 7 battery withstands tank crush test, exceeding China testing standards

Geely has conducted a demonstration of the safety of its Golden Brick EV battery in a crush test, where the battery specified for the Galaxy E5 – twin to the Proton eMas 7 – is subjected to the weight of a 36-tonne ZTZ-59D main battle tank, reported Car News China. The test yielded forces which were 1.8 times more than what is required by the new battery safety standards of China, it wrote.

The battery pack survived getting run over by the main battle tank, maintaining its structural integrity without bulging, leakage, fire, or explosion. The test was also carried out on individual battery cells, and groups of 10 cells.

This is in reference to the country’s new battery certification standard GB38031-2025, which requires the battery to attain higher standards of safety, namely for fast-charging cycles, protection against thermal runaway, and resistance to underbody impacts.

The Golden Brick battery pack gets IP68 and IPX9K ingress protection ratings, and it uses cell-to-body integration technology, and a 2.6 mm thick sandwich-structure bottom plate. Further safety features include liquid-electric separation, electrical isolation, heat dissipation and other protective measures.

While the Chinese national standard for EV batteries require a total of 24 safety tests, the Aegis Golden Brick battery is subjected to 36 test scenarios by Geely, of which 23 tests exceed the national testing requirements, the report wrote. Additionally, Geely plans to open up its battery safety patent portfolio to the wider industry, according to Car News China.

Earlier this week, details of a new, extended-range version of the Galaxy E5 came to light through filings with the Chinese ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT), revealing that the new version will feature a battery pack with a capacity of 68.39 kWh.

At present, the current selection of battery packs available to the Geely Galaxy E5/Geely EX5 are the 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh versions, offering 440 km and 530 km of range respectively (CLTC).

In Malaysia, the Proton eMas 7 with the same battery options gets WLTP battery range ratings of 345 km and 410 km, respectively. The Proton emas 7 was launched last December, at prices starting from RM106k for the Prime with the 49.52 kWh battery, and RM120k for the Premium with the 60.22 kWh battery.

Proton eMas 7 EV convoy taken on 10,432 km regional road trip – nine Asean countries traversed in 22 days

Proton has taken the eMas 7 on a road trip across nine ASEAN countries as part of the ASEAN Unity Drive 2025, a regional road trip led by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii). The journey covered 10,432 km over a duration of 22 days, according to Proton.

On the journey, the drive took the eMas 7 through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore before the return journey back to Malaysia. The journey saw the eMas 7 surpass its initial target of 9,000 km by more than 1,400 km, the carmaker said.

“There were some challenging routes where the road condition was bad and some of the routes took us far from the charging point. We encountered one situation where the charging point was farther than the remaining range. We stopped at a coffee shop to use the portable AC charging to make up for the shortage of battery percentage so we could reach the charging point,” said participant Mohd Adib bin Mohd Azam.

“We had anticipated the trip from Lao to Cambodia would be challenging due to the availability of the next charging station from Pakse to Krong Kracheh, which is 356 km away. It gave us a bit of range anxiety although it was well within the range of the vehicle’s claimed distance. Driving conditions is a constant variable,” said another participant, Muhammad Taufiq bin Mohd Zin.

Charging an electric vehicle in a foreign land required the use of local mobile applications and search engines to locate charging points, another participant recalled. “Yes, due to the unavailability and timing of charging stations, especially in Laos, we brought a mobile charger to tap into the domestic household current supply,” said Wan Kok Chai.

“Everyone who has ever worked on the Proton eMas 7 project can be proud of this achievement. This journey belongs to all of us,” said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang.

In addition to its undertaking of the ASEAN Unity Drive 2025, the Proton eMas 7 was also pressed into service in the 2025 ASEAN Summit, while 61 units of the Proton EV were used as official vehicles at the ASEAN Economic Ministers retreat in February, as well as the ASEAN SOM meeting in Langkawi in January this year.

“God willing, I believe the Proton eMas 7 will be a catalyst for the promotion and development of the nation’s EV industry, especially as we will soon host the 46th ASEAN Summit. This initiative is also in line with Malaysia’s zero-carbon commitment in the years to come, and sustainability and green energy transition agendas under the Malaysia Madani framework.

“Let us continue to support local innovation and work towards a more sustainable, competitive and technologically-advanced future,” said Anwar.

The eMas 7, Proton’s first EV, is based on the Geely Galaxy E5, with the Malaysian company claiming it to be a co-developed model with local involvement.

Proton eMas 7 sales reach 2,716 units for domestic and export, 863 sold in April – 1 bought every hour

Proton has announced that it has delivered 2,716 units of its electric eMas 7 to domestic and export customers, consolidating its position as the market leader – at least in Malaysia. The company moved 863 units of its zero-emission SUV in April, its best month so far; as its new energy arm Pro-Net put it, one Malaysian bought an eMas 7 every hour.

We reported last week that a total of 799 units of the eMas 7 were delivered here last month according to the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) registration data, which would mean that 64 units were exported to its sole overseas market of Nepal. Year-to-date deliveries in Malaysia, meanwhile, stood at 2,537 units, equating to 179 units exported.

If those export numbers are true, that’s some good going, given that the eMas 7 was only launched in Nepal in late March. That would mean that Proton sold more EVs in the South Asian nation per month on average (89.5 units) than Zeekr did 009s over here (78 units). We have seen some significant discrepancies between Proton’s and JPJ’s numbers before, however, so we’d take those figures with a heavy pinch of salt.

Proton eMas 7 sales reach 2,716 units for domestic and export, 863 sold in April – 1 bought every hour

“We are incredibly grateful to all of our customers for their continued confidence in us,” said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang. “To have one unit sold every hour shows how ready Malaysians are to embrace the EV future with the Proton eMas 7. Their trust and strong support have driven this success.”

That the eMas 7 maintained its sales momentum in Malaysia last month is all the more impressive given some staggering price cuts for the BYD Atto 3 and Chery Omoda E5 in April, which brought their prices down to the Proton’s level. Since then, Chery slashed the price of Omoda E5 even further, dropping it below RM100,000; we’ll see if the eMas 7 continues to sell well when this month’s figures come out.

Proton eMas 7 sales reach 2,716 units for domestic and export, 863 sold in April – 1 bought every hour

Launched in Malaysia December, the eMas 7 is priced at RM109,800 for the base Prime and RM123,800 for the Premium; a RM4,000 discount for the first 6,000 buyers drops those figures to RM105,800 and RM119,800 respectively. Both variants are powered by a front motor producing 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque, getting them from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

The difference comes in the Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery capacities – the Prime gets a 49.52 kWh pack with a WLTP-rated range of 345 km, while the Premium’s larger 60.22 kWh pack enables it to travel up to 410 km on a single charge.

Proton sells 12,692 units in April 2025 – eMas 7 still Malaysia’s best-selling EV, X50 retakes segment lead

Proton has announced that it closed April with 12,692 units sold (exports, smart and eMas included), representing a 14.7% year-on-year (YoY) increase and netting it a projected 20.8% market share for the month, based on an estimated total industry volume of 60,886 units (+1.8% YoY, -16.3% MoM).

The eMas 7 remains Malaysia’s best-selling EV, selling 863 units in April (exports included) for a year-to-date (YTD) tally of 2,716 units. Proton says EVs now account for 6% of its overall sales, and Proton eMas is the country’s second-best-selling EV brand.

The X50 took back the B-SUV crown by selling 2,389 units in April (its best month so far this year) for 7,506 units YTD (+420 units YoY). Other models’ April and YTD sales are as follows – X90 (194, 873, D-SUV leader), S70 (1,716, 6,181, C-sedan leader), X70 (682, 2,839) and Saga (5,213, nearly 21,000). The Persona and Iriz respectively did 1,328 and 290 units in April, making them second-ranked B-segment sedan and fourth-placed B-segment hatch respectively in terms of sales.

On exports, Proton says April was its best month so far this year – 520 units were sold outside Malaysia, comprising the X50, Saga and eMas 7. The EV SUV was recently previewed at The Car Expo in Singapore, heralding Proton’s return to the market after 13 years, and Bangladesh recently saw the unveiling of the locally-assembled (CKD) Proton X70.

Proton eMas 7 previewed in Singapore ahead of launch – re-entry after over a decade, from RM566,100!

The Proton eMas 7 continues to make its way to export markets, with the electric SUV having been previewed in Singapore at The Car Expo 2025 at Singapore Expo this past weekend. The national carmaker said it is re-entering the island nation’s market after an absence of over a decade.

Its appearance down south comes just over a month after the eMas 7 was launched in its first international market of Nepal. Proton is being represented in Singapore by Vincar, a parallel importer that also distributes GAC Aion vehicles in the country.

Further information was unearthed by local automotive portal Sgcarmart, which reported that the car will be launched in August and, thanks to outputs of 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm, be categorised as Category B. This means its COE will be more expensive than that of a Category A vehicle (limited to 150 PS, or 110 kW).

However, the previously-reported Founder’s Edition, limited to the first 99 units, will come with a S$20,000 (RM65,100) discount, essentially negating the difference in COE categories. The car will start from a whopping S$173,988 (RM566,100).

That’s over five times the Malaysian starting price, but Singapore gets one over us in the colour choices, with Moyu Black joining the usual palette of Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Quartz Rose and Lithium White. Over here, Proton generally reserves black for vehicles used by the army, which presumably explains its absence on our palette.

From the looks of it, the eMas 7 will be offered in Singapore in sole Prime trim, as evidenced by the smaller 18-inch wheels (the Premium gets 19s). This means it will likely come with the smaller of the two available Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with a capacity of 49.52 kWh delivering a WLTP-rated range of 345 km. With DC fast charging power capped at 80 kW, topping up the pack from 30 to 80% takes 20 minutes.

“The debut of the Proton eMas 7 in Singapore marks a significant step in our international expansion and our commitment to bringing high-quality, technologically advanced EVs to the region,” said CEO Li Chunrong. “We are confident that the eMas 7, with its compelling features and suitability for urban environments, will resonate well with Singaporean drivers as the nation embraces electric mobility.”

Proton eMas 7 bookings exceed 5,500 units – over 1.8k units delivered; Malaysia’s best-selling EV this year

Proton has announced it has received over 5,500 bookings for the eMas 7 since order taking for the electric vehicle (EV) began in October last year – the launch took place in December 2025. It added that the eMas 7 is Malaysia’s best-selling EV for the third consecutive month in 2025, with more than 1,800 units delivered so far – the tally is 1,853 units as per an April 8 release.

“The eMas 7’s success shows what’s possible when we combine global EV expertise with deep local insight. We’ve introduced a vehicle that reflects the needs and aspirations of Malaysian drivers—practical, high-performing, and ready for everyday life,” said Zhang Qiang, CEO of Pro-Net, which handles Proton’s EV brand and smart.

The eMas 7 is offered in two variants, with the base Prime priced at RM109,800 on-the-road without insurance, while the top-spec Premium retails for RM123,800. Proton currently offers a RM4,000 discount for the first 6,000 buyers, which lowers the EV’s price down to RM105,800 (Prime) and RM119,800 (Premium) respectively.

The Prime uses a 49.52 kWh version of Geely’s Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a WLTP-rated range of 345 km. Meanwhile, the Premium’s 60.22 kWh pack delivers 410 km range, with both variants sharing the same front electric motor rated at 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque.

  • Proton eMas 7 OTA update pipeline – Apple CarPlay and ice cream sound fix in July, Android Auto in Dec

Proton eMas 7 OTA update pipeline – Apple CarPlay and ice cream sound fix in July, Android Auto in Dec

Proton has outlined the roadmap for over-the-air (OTA) updates that will be applied to the Proton eMas 7 electric SUV, according to a post on the Proton eMas 7 Community Malaysia Facebook page. Last week, it was learnt that the carmaker rolled out the Flyme Auto S version 1.1.4 firmware update for a host of fixes.

According to a presentation slide that was photographed, the over-the-air updates are pushed to customer vehicles on a quarterly basis. Completed so far as of its April OTA update are charging start/stop button, optimised braking and the ability for owners to view the vehicle’s location when it is asleep.

The next update set for the second quarter of this year, to be rolled out approximately in July, will include wireless Apple CarPlay, switchable “ice-cream van” sound, access to third-party apps, radio scanning fix, as well as other to-be-announced improvements.

This will be followed by updates scheduled for Q3 2025, to be released approximately in October. These will include wired Apple CarPlay, a memory function for speed warning switching, and other improvements. Wrapping up the updates timeline in Q4 2025 in December will be wired and wireless Android Auto, along with other updates.

Launched towards the end of last year, the Proton eMas 7 made its debut with two variants – Prime and Premium – each with a front-mounted electric motor producing 218 PS and 320 Nm. This propels Proton’s first electric SUV from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 175 km/h.

The Prime starts the range with a 49.52 kWh battery offering 345 km of range while the Premium brings a 60.022 kWh unit that is good for 410 km (both on the WLTP testing standard), and both are the Geely Aegis short-blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

Charging the eMas 7 from 30 to 80% takes 20 minutes using DC fast charging at up to 100 kW with the Premium (80 kW for the Prime), while a full charge using an 11 kW AC wallbox takes 4.9 hours for the Prime and 6.1 hours for the Premium. The eMas 7 is also the first Proton to get a suite of driver assistance features, including Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities.
