smart #5 EHD revealed – 1.5T PHEV, 1,600 km range

You saw the smart #5 up close at the recent Malaysia Autoshow; now there’s a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version called the smart #5 EHD (Electric Hybrid Drive), as Car News China reports.

All we know for now is that there’s a 163 PS BHE15-CFZ 1.5 litre turbo engine, an over-40 kWh CATL LFP battery, a CLTC fuel economy as low as 4.4 litres per 100 km, a 250-km EV-only range and a 1,600-km combined range. Electric motor output has not been revealed yet.

Length, width, height and wheelbase are respectively 4,705, 1,920, 1,710 and 2,900 mm, while kerb weight is 2,190 kg – quite a lot lighter than the EV variant‘s 2,450 kg. Of course, the EV variant has much bigger batteries – 76 kWh LFP for the RWD and 100 kWh NMC for the AWD.

Looks-wise, wheels aside, the only differences we can spot between this and the EV variant are the roof LiDAR and slightly-different front and rear bumper inserts. More should be revealed soon.

smart #5 EV previewed in Malaysia – Brabus, standard RHD show examples due here in a couple of months

Earlier this week, smart Malaysia put up a teaser post showing a couple of close-up photos of the smart #5, hinting that the EV could be making an appearance in Malaysia. Right on cue, the five-seat SUV has popped up, doing so at the Malaysia Auto Show 2025. The #5 that’s on display at the event is a left-hand drive unit, and is a Summit edition model for the Chinese market.

Revealed in August last year, the smart #5 isn’t an SUV body-style sister of the #1 and #3, but is a much larger offering, underpinned by a PMA2+ platform featuring 800V electrical architecture. In China, the #5 is available with four powertrain options, and these are:

    • RWD 340 PS (250 kW)
    • RWD 363 PS (267 kW)
    • AWD 587 PS (432 kW), with 224 PS (165 kW) front and 363 PS (250 kW) rear motors
    • AWD 646 PS (475 kW), with 224 PS (165 kW) front and 421 PS (310 kW) rear motors; #5 Brabus

Two battery packs are available for the smart #5, with a 76 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit for the RWD variants and a 100 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery for the AWD cars.

In terms of range, the RWD versions offer 570 and 660 km of CLTC-rated range (467 km and 541 km WLTP), while the 100 kWh unit on the AWD versions provide around 720 km of CLTC-rated travel (or roughly 590 km WLTP). Charging aspects aren’t detailed, but the brand says that the battery can be juiced from a 10 to 80% state-of-charge in just 15 minutes through DC charging.

The Summit preview unit is a dual-motor version with the 100 kWh battery, but it remains to be seen as to which configuration (RWD or AWD) of the regular #5 will make it here. What we do know is that the Brabus version revealed last month is certain, followed by what should be a #5 Premium, with word being that we might not have to wait very long for the right-hand drive versions of these to appear – we may be looking at a couple of months, tops.

Whatever the case, novelties to expect include dual 13-inch AMOLED display screens, a 20-speaker Sennheiser Signature Sound System, 256-colour ambient lighting and the ability to fold the rear seats flat into a king-size in-car suite. Key interior figures include 1,530 litres of rear storage space, a 72-litre frunk and 34 smart compartments.

More on the #5 when the RHD versions go on preview here in the coming months.

smart Malaysia has posted up teasers of the smart #5 with two close-up shots of the EV, the second of which showing clearly the #5 badge. “Bold new adventures are just ahead. The spirit of discovery is calling — are you ready?” the caption reads. Launching soon?

The #5 is a modern smart that’s unlike any other before it – apart from being the brand’s largest car to date, it’s a squarish and rugged-looking SUV that’s pretty handsome. At 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,705 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, this five-seat SUV is even longer than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Honda CR-V.

Revealed in August 2024, the #5 has four powertrain options in China – RWD 340 PS (250 kW), RWD 363 PS (267 kW), AWD 587 PS (432 kW) and AWD 646 PS (475 kW) – the latter is the Brabus, which was only revealed last month. The AWD cars share the same front motor with 224 PS (165 kW); at the back, the starter car has a 363 PS motor while the Brabus gets a 421 PS (310 kW) unit.

Two battery packs are offered – a 76-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit for the RWD variants (China’s loose CLTC range from 570 km to 660 km) and a 100-kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery for the AWD cars (range from 720 to 740 km)

The smart #5 isn’t an SUV bodystyle sister of the #1 and #3; instead, it sits on a PMA2+ platform with an 800V electrical architecture, so there’s support for DC fast charging at 4C speeds – ‘C’ indicates how many times a battery can be charged in one hour. The company says that 500 km of range can be gained from just 15 minutes of charging.

As you can see above, the dashboard is covered in screens, which comprise a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and twin 2.5K 13-inch AMOLED centre and front passenger touchscreens.

There’s also an augmented reality-enabled head-up display and a 20-speaker Sennheiser sound system with a detachable portable speaker. Sennheiser is a headphone specialist from Germany but we haven’t really seen its name in cars before, so this is a cool collab.

The Malaysia Autoshow 2025 is happening this week and smart is participating, so the #5 could be previewed at MAEPS Serdang. If so, it will be a departure from the prolonged build-up that Pro-Net typically orchestrates for its new models. We’ll see, stay tuned.

smart #5 Brabus revealed – most powerful smart ever with 646 PS, 0-100 km/h 3.8 secs, 540 km range

It’s been a while since the smart #5 was shown, but the hot Brabus version has finally been revealed at Milan Design Week. As expected, the high-performance electric SUV is the most powerful smart ever built, more so than even past Brabus models that were already pretty potent.

Full details have yet to be revealed, but it’s been confirmed that the car will harness 646 PS (475 kW) from its “flexible all-wheel-drive system,” most probably with dual motors. That’s actually the same as what the standard #5 AWD makes in China, yet with Launch Mode enabled, the Brabus will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h more than a second quicker at 3.8 seconds. This figure, by the way, is identical to the #1 Brabus‘, despite the #5 Brabus being a larger and presumably much heavier car.

smart #5 Brabus revealed – most powerful smart ever with 646 PS, 0-100 km/h 3.8 secs, 540 km range

Despite all this power, the car is still capable of a WLTP-rated range of 540 km through the same 100 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery fitted to other long-range #5 models. The car also features an 800-volt architecture that enables support for a massive 400 kW of DC fast charging power, topping up the pack from 10 to 80% charge in just 18 minutes.

Like the #1 and #3 Brabus, the #5 Brabus features no sheetmetal changes over the standard car and is differentiated only by red accents on the front spoiler, side mouldings, rear bumper, door mirrors and roof. Also fitted are a set of 21-inch Brabus Monoblock Z black alloy wheels with a polished rim, featuring the same ten-spoke design as on Bottrop’s tuned vehicles – this look is also reportedly coming to the #1.

Inside, the #5’s heated and ventilated seats are upholstered in Dinamica microfibre – the same material found in Mercedes-AMG models – while the steering wheel is wrapped in Alcantara. You also get alloy pedals, microfibre headlining and plenty of Brabus logos, including on the headrest embroidery. As per the regular #5, the Brabus comes with lots of tech, such as twin 13-inch OLED touchscreens on the centre and passenger side and a 2,000-watt Sennheiser sound system with 20 speakers, including a centre raising speaker.

The #5 Brabus will be available to order in Germany starting April 24, priced from €60,900 (RM301,900); it will then be rolled out to further European markets in the second and third quarters of the year. The car will also be launched in China at Auto Shanghai on April 23.

  • smart #5 set to gain PHEV variant as EV sales slow

The hitherto electric vehicle-only company smart is caving to market pressure with plans to add a plug-in hybrid variant to its new #5 flagship. The move, reported by Autocar, follows a similar rethink of electrification plans from the likes of Volvo and Hyundai as demand for full EVs continues to be soft.

Chinese-based officials confirmed the news after photos of a prototype surfaced on Autohome, with its European spokesperson commenting to the publication: “We see individual mobility powered by combustion engines and, in particular, with hybrid drives as a transitional technology towards purely electric driving. It is important to respond to the increasingly diverse demands and desires of the customers. smart cannot exclude any technological solution for the future at the current point of time.”

smart is just the second Geely brand to backpedal on its EV-only pledge – Zeekr is also reportedly preparing hybrid models that will debut at the Auto Shanghai motor show this April. The company is presumably aiming to capitalise on recent strong sales of plug-in hybrids and range-extender EVs in China.

The #5 PHEV will likely utilise the latest NordThor EM-i powertrain found in the Geely Galaxy Starship 7, which pairs a 111 PS/136 Nm 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) for a total system output of 218 PS and 262 Nm of torque.

The Geely version can be had with a 19.09 Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that provides an all-electric range of 120 km, lifting the total range to 1,420 km. The Galaxy Starship 7 could be offered in Malaysia as the Proton eMas 7 PHEV (a trademark for the name has already been filed), meaning that for the first time, both of Pro-Net’s brands would offer the same powertrain.

To recap, the smart #5 is currently only available as a pure EV in China. There, smart’s largest model by far is available in rear-wheel-drive form with either 340 PS (250 kW) or 363 PS (267 kW), as well as in all-wheel drive trim with 645 PS (475 kW). Range on China’s generous CLTC cycle is 570 km with the base 76 kWh LFP battery or 740 km with the 100 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) pack (580 km with AWD).

  • smart #5 revealed – larger C-segment SUV with up to 400 kW DC fast charging, 740 km CLTC range

smart #5 revealed – larger C-segment SUV with up to 400 kW DC fast charging, 740 km CLTC range

Four months after it was first teased as a concept, the smart #5 has finally been given its world premiere in Australia. The brand’s third production SUV is by far its largest model yet, dwarfing its iconic fortwo city cars.

Even next to the #3, the #5 is huge – at 4,705 mm long, the car is a whopping 265 mm longer than the next biggest smart. In fact, it’s longer than rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (4,635 mm), the Honda CR-V (4,691 mm) and even the China-only long-wheelbase BMW iX1 (4,616 mm). Speaking of wheelbase, the #5’s is especially long at 2,900 mm, although it is shaded by the Ioniq 5’s by 100 mm.

As big as it is, the #5 appears to be a five-seater only. This is despite the boxy design sharing more than a few cues with the seven-seater Mercedes-Benz GLB, such as the bluff front end and upright glasshouse – both cars were designed by Mercedes, after all.

smart #5 revealed – larger C-segment SUV with up to 400 kW DC fast charging, 740 km CLTC range

The front and rear are characterised by the squarish head- and taillights joined by a transparent strip, housing oblong light clusters – including along the aforementioned strip. Lower down, the centre section of the bumpers protrude outward, giving the appearance of a bull bar and adding to the #5’s rugged look.

Along the side, you’ll find subtly blown fenders and a window line kink that leads into the thick vertical D-pillars that house the smart badge. Rectangular two-tone door mirrors and a triangular front fender appliqué add some visual intrigue, while the typical premium smart features, such as the flush pop-out door handles and frameless windows, have been joined by Rolls-Royce-style “floating” centre caps that stay upright when the car is moving.

That’s not all – buyers can opt for the #5 Summit Edition, which comes with the Adventurers’ Collection package filled with off-road accessories. These include a roof carrier, side steps, a carrier and ladder on either side and some underbody protection. You also get a roof-mounted light bar and a power-retractable tow hook (the car has a towing capacity of 1,600 kg).

smart #5 revealed – larger C-segment SUV with up to 400 kW DC fast charging, 740 km CLTC range

Inside, smart has maximised the space inside the #5 with a distinctive oblong dashboard housing no less than three massive displays – a 10.3-inch instrument display and twin 13-inch AMOLED centre and front passenger touchscreens with a resolution of 2.5K.

The screens utilise a redesigned “Crystal Prism” interface with a new lion avatar (called Leo, replacing the fox and cheetah avatars in the #1 and #3 respectively) and dynamic 3D graphics built on the Unreal Engine. These run on a new AMD V2000 chip that is said to offer nearly double the computing power of Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8295. There’s also a voice control system that incorporates generative AI, although smart hasn’t provided any details about which AI model it uses.

Also fitted is a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display, ambient lighting that pulsates with the music being played and a 20-speaker Sennheiser Signature Sound System. The latter comes with a centre speaker that rises up from the dashboard, as well as a portable speaker that can be used together with a built-in 1080p projector.

smart #5 revealed – larger C-segment SUV with up to 400 kW DC fast charging, 740 km CLTC range

Elsewhere in the cabin, you’ll find optional oak wood trim and Nissan-style “zero-gravity” seats that can be reclined up to 121 degrees, upholstered in leather with a distinctive V-shaped pattern. The rear pews get reclining seat backs and a “one-button comfort mode” that affords more legroom, presumably by pushing the front passenger seat forwards. The boot measures up to 1,530 litres and comes with an additional 110 litres of underfloor storage, plus a 72-litre front boot.

smart has kept mum about the #5’s technical specifications, only saying that the car will come with a 100 kWh battery that delivers up to 740 km of range on China’s incredibly generous CLTC cycle. Expect the WLTP figure to be much lower – smart claimed a WLTP range of over 550 km with the Concept #5.

An 800-volt architecture (a first for smart) delivers “4C ultra-fast charging technology.” This is a China-specific term that denotes a charging input four times the battery capacity, so the #5 should to support up to 400 kW of DC fast charging. smart claims this will charge the battery from 10 to 80% in just 15 minutes.

smart #5 revealed – larger C-segment SUV with up to 400 kW DC fast charging, 740 km CLTC range

Power outputs have yet to be divulged, but a filing on China’s ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT) website earlier this year listed four powertrain options, starting with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive model with outputs of either 340 PS (250 kW) or 363 PS (267 kW). The amount of power likely corresponds to the battery sizes, which also allegedly includes a 76 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) option.

Also set to be offered a regular dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant making 587 PS (432 kW), while a Brabus model will continue to sit at the top of the range with a whopping 646 PS (475 kW).

smart #5 teased ahead of August 28 reveal – EV C-segment SUV with 800-volt DC charging, 550 km range

After #1 and #3 comes #5, naturally – smart’s largest model yet will finally be fully revealed in two weeks’ time on August 28, four months after the concept version made its debut at Auto China in Beijing. The boxy electric SUV will be a far cry from its jellybean-like siblings, both in terms of design and size.

The #5 is being billed as a “Contemporary Adventurer”; as such, the Geely-Daimler joint venture has selected Australia as the location of its world premiere, thanks to the strong road trip culture Down Under. This is despite the #1 and #3 having yet to even be launched there – these cars are only set to go on sale next month.

In any case, the #5’s looks, again created by Mercedes-Benz, is said to be a continuation of smart’s “Sensual Producty” design language, even though it’s much more angular than prior models. Despite the camouflage on the teased prototypes, the resemblance to the Concept #5 is clear and includes squarish head- and taillights joined together by a transparent strip, pill-shaped front and rear light modules, prominent haunches, an upright glasshouse and a window line kink leading to the vertical D-pillars.

It also appears that the #5 can be optioned with the concept’s chunky front and rear skid plates, although the production version obviously loses out on the show car’s suicide doors. Of course, the car’s exterior design has already been revealed in a filing with China’s ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT), showing flat-faced aero alloy wheels on the regular model and four-spoke turbine-style items on the Brabus.

Expect the interior to largely mirror the concept’s, incorporating an oblong dashboard and a massive bank of screens – including 13-inch OLED infotainment touchscreens in the centre and ahead of the front passenger. Also previewed are Nissan-style “zero gravity” seats with an “industry-first” cushion airbag and a built-in ottoman on the passenger side.

Whereas the #1 and #3 are B-segment-sized SUVs, the #5 is firmly in the C-segment. The aforementioned MIIT filing lists a length of 4,705 mm, a width of 1,920 mm, a height of 1,705 mm and a wheelbase of 2,900 mm, meaning that the car is actually larger than even the Honda CR-V. A fortwo this thing most certainly isn’t, yet despite this, the #5 will only be offered as a five-seater – at least, for now.

Also listed in the filing are four powertrain options, starting with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive model with outputs of either 340 PS (250 kW) or 363 PS (267 kW) – likely depending on the motor – and a regular dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant making 587 PS (432 kW). Sitting at the top of the range is the hot Brabus with a whopping 646 PS (475 kW).

As for the battery, the #5 is set to have 76 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and 100 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) packs that smart claims deliver up to 550 km of WLTP-rated range. An 800-volt electrical architecture also enables fast DC charging, topping up the battery from 10 to 80% in as little as 15 minutes.

smart #5 revealed – production version of EV SUV gets five seats, 800V architecture; 4 variants, up to 638 hp

Following the Beijing Motor Show premiere of the smart Concept #5, the Chinese ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT) has leaked homologation filing images of the production version of the #5, along with details on its powertrain.

Dimensions of the production smart #5 have also been disclosed, with the five-seater electric SUV measuring 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,705 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. The kerb weight for the top powertrain specification is 2,450 kg, according to the Chinese ministry documentation. Wheels available for the #5 measure 18 to 21 inches in diameter.

This makes the #5 the largest smart EV production model yet, as the coupé-SUV #3 measures 4,440 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,600 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,785 mm. By comparison, the #1 is 4,270 mm long, 1,822 mm wide and 1,636 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

smart #5 revealed – production version of EV SUV gets five seats, 800V architecture; 4 variants, up to 638 hp

Four powertrain choices have been listed, beginning with the single motor RWD with 250 kW (335 hp), an uprated version of the single motor RWD with 267 kW (358 hp), a dual-motor AWD featuring a 165 kW (221 hp) front motor and a 267 kW (358 hp) rear motor for a combined 432 kW (579 hp), and the top dual-motor AWD version, with a more powerful 310 kW (416 hp) rear motor for a combined 475 kW (638 hp).

Battery specifications depend on the powertrain specified, with the single-motor RWD version getting a lithium iron phosphate battery pack while the dual-motor AWD versions get a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack. These are claimed to have a capacity of 100 kWh, for a maximum range of 700 km on the CLTC protocol.

Car News China cites earlier reports as stating that the smart #5 will have 800-volt electrical architecture and “4C-rated” charging, refering to its theoretical ability to be charged at a kW rate of four times its kWh capacity. While a premiere date has yet to be officially disclosed, the publication claims an expected debut in the fourth quarter of this year.

smart Concept #5 unveiled – four-seater EV SUV with 100+ kWh battery, 800-volt tech; over 550 km range

Heading to the Beijing Auto Show this week is the smart Concept #5, a mid-sized SUV concept that will be the brand’s largest model yet. This comes after the smart #3 that made its debut in Auto Shanghai 2023, and itself made a Malaysian appearance earlier this week.

Where the #3 is of a coupé-SUV form, the Concept #5 wears a more upright two-box SUV silhouette and is shown with a range of features such as off-road tyres, roof-mounted light bar, front and rear skid plates with an integrated winch and folding rear step ladder, and more for the outdoor adventurer aesthetic.

All-wheel-drive for the Concept #5 means the presence of a dual-motor layout, and the concept model is touted to feature an 800-volt electrical architecture along with a battery of a nominal capacity over 100 kWh. The system allows for fast charging that will enable a 10-80% recharge in 15 minutes, according to smart, yielding up to 550 km of range on a full charge.

While no dimensions for the Concept #5 have been revealed, smart says that the model has “an efficient footprint” relative to its size, and exceptionally short front and rear overhangs. Here, the doors open in a coach-door arrangement to reveal a four-seater cabin, with a floating centre console that runs the length of both rows of seats.

Inside, a pair of OLED widescreen displays plus a driver’s display feature on the dashboard, providing access to the vehicle’s functions. Ambient lighting contributes to the visuals in the Concept #5, while a portable audio speaker is integrated into the centre console.

The front passenger seat features new airbag solutions, according to smart, and also integrates heating, ventilation, massage functions as well as a leg rest.

The cabin of the Concept #5 also serves as a platform to showcase the latest from in-car artificial intelligence (AI). A key feature will be a tool by generative AI specialists Cerence, and this is said to enable the occupants of the vehicle to ‘enagage the in-car assistant in entertaining conversations’.

Functions that can be controlled by voice include phone call and messaging, music and media, air conditioning, navigation, vehicle control, personal settings, along with information including weather, news, calendar, general knowledge and more, says smart.

Following the public premiere of the smart Concept #5 that is set for tomorrow, April 25, a series-production model of what will be the third model from smart is set to be unveiled in the second half of this year, says the carmaker.
