Tokyo 2017: Daihatsu Boon – ‘JDM Myvi’ on display

The Daihatsu Boon did not make its debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, but we snapped a gallery of it due to public interest.

The incredibly popular Perodua Myvi, which reached the one million unit milestone a few months ago, is due to be replaced. Perodua’s roomy five-door hatch has always been based on the Japanese market Daihatsu Boon, and many are expecting the same with the third-generation Myvi. Will that be the case this time around?

Maybe not, because the Malaysian firm’s design capabilities have been on an upward trend, culminating in the introduction of the Perodua Bezza last year. Perodua’s first sedan, while built on Daihatsu bones, was an in-house design that included the upper body as well as the cabin. There’s no D-badged Bezza equivalent in existence. The “new Myvi” would probably follow this trend.

Anyway, this is what the Japanese get. The Boon is a cute-looking, high-roofed B-segment hatchback with Mini-like eyes and plenty of round elements. This is the higher end Cliq variant with a special colour scheme – pearl white exterior with a black top-half (roof and all pillars) and red accents on the beltline, lower body and wheel centre caps.

The red accents are replicated in the cabin, which has plenty of storage spaces and is laid out in simple fashion. The front seats are connected, and occupants can exit using whichever door that’s convenient (parking slots are very tight in Japan) without having to climb over anything. The layout is very Japanese and is unlikely to feature in the next Myvi.

The Boon is powered by a 1KR-FE “Topaz Neo” 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine with 69 PS and 92 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. The 910 kg car is mated to a CVT automatic, and is capable of 28 km/l economy in the Japanese JC08 cycle. Malaysians have higher requirements, so expect 1.3L and 1.5L four-cylinder engine options, as with the current Myvi.

Ini semua salad aminah… Still using 1.3/1.5 older engine non-dual-vvti & non-safety… Deswai buyer complaint very high fuel consumption even higher than 1.5Vios/City. Also Alza since 2009 till now already 8yrs+ still unchange no new model. Now Korean auto launch new gen every 4yrs.

Nearly all of PErodua cars have no VSC and some, still got no ABS. Alza, Myvi, Axia etc etc etc

Hello Perodua, you all make billions untung every month, don’t you think its time to give us VSC?

    • Myvi RM51k people already complain so pricy yet asking for a VSC? I still can not understand Malaysian’s mindset and way of thinking.

Because the Japanese want VSC and won’t buy a car without, and Malaysians don’t care.

Car makers will give customers what they want. If Malaysians had stopped buying non-VSC cars long time ago, car makers would have stopped making non-VSC cars long time ago.

      The tech itself isn’t expensive.

Good, any perodua Sedan 1.5L in the near future ?

    • It wont happen. Toyota owns daihatsu and they will deem that selling a 1.5L sedan will eat into the sales of vios.

Dear P2, U know why your Bezza is not selling well ?! Bcos it is not handsome/beautiful.

Your top sellers are all Hatch Back cars. Since this Boon is a HB car, I have no doubt it will sell well.

Just bring in or rebadge it. It’s time U replace your Myvi & conform to M’sian safety std/requirement.

DCT and CVT both have their fair share of issues…the torque converter automatic may sound archaic, but modern ones are actually quite good and are proven overtime to be reliable.

that being said, there are good and reliable CVT and DCT in the market today as well…it’s just that their characteristics are not for everyone.

probably later, rather than sooner if they plan to incorporate an in-house design and adapt it for the local market

    Dear paultan

That daihatsu boon IS the current perodua myvi, perodua has made substantial alterations to the front, rear and dashboard. You can see the similarities in the door shape.

There ia a big possibility that the new myvi isn’t based on the current boon at all, or the new myvi could be the 1st of the new boon family to be launched.

For example the axia is no longer based on the JDM mira (like kancil, kelisa, viva), but from the indonesian market daihatsu ayla. The new myvi could be the same thing.

on one hand we’re shouting EEV, but on the other we have “Malaysians’ higher requirements” for larger engines…ironic

as a city car 1.0 at that weight will get you around and have significant benefits on fuel economy AND emissions.

not sure why the focus on bigger engines is front and centre…to “race” other rampant drivers on the road?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 7 Thumb down 0
    • Larger engines doesnt mean you will sacrifice fuel economy. Bigger displacement give you more torque and you need to press less on the accelerator. The 1 thing that affect fuel economy is your right foot. Besides that 3 cylinder engines sucks due to excessive vibration . Even the award winning engine of the year ford ecoboost 1.0L turbo is the same. You can feel the dashboard of the car vibrating.
