VIDEO: UDM tagline reintroduced with F10 refueling ad!

Most of us will probably associate BMWs with the term Ultimate Driving Machine, and a lot of owners refer to their cars as UDMs. But we’ve never actually seem the phrase Ultimate Driving Machine used in a BMW ad for a long time, instead these days we usually see Sheer Driving Pleasure or the most recent theme – Joy.

Until now anyway – this new ad for the F10 BMW 5-Series returns BMW advertising to the phrase Ultimate Driving Machine, although the dramatic ad (which features a refueling plane) talks more about the F10′s fuel efficiency than anything else.

Wearnes VW opens new showroom in Sungai Besi, KL

We were at the launch of the new Volkswagen Sungai Besi showroom yesterday night, which was quite happening for a showroom launch with lots of pretty people.

Operated by Wearnes VW, the exact location of the showroom is along Jalan Sungai Besi, next to the Volvo showroom and beside Proton Edar. It was formerly an open space and the entrance is on Jalan Dua, off the main road.

This is the third Volkswagen showroom by Wearnes VW, which also has outlets at Jalan Ampang and Bangsar. A unique feature of this Sg Besi outlet is the first integrated dialogue reception where service advisors are able to easily detect and address issues for a more accurate diagnosis of the car’s health.

“We are very proud of the new showroom because it’s designed and built from the ground up according to the latest corporate standards set by Volkswagen.

“These are exciting times for the VW brand as we have a dream portfolio of models. The increased traffic through our showrooms and subsequent number of service visits is testimony of the interest in the brand,” said Jack Zaal, GM of Wearnes Automotive.

It’s another pit stop for VW owners, who were also recently greeted with good news of a 5-year premium roadside assistance programme. Volkswagen Sungai Besi can be contacted at 03-92362929.

Photos from the event are after the jump.

New Ssangyong Actyon SUV set for May 2011 local debut?

Malaysian Ssangyong distributor Competitive Supreme has updated their website to feature a new SUV model – the Ssangyong Actyon, which turns out to be one and the same as the new Ssangyong Korando that was unveiled in November last year. The new Korando started out as the Giugiaro-styled Ssangyong C200 Concept.

According to Competitive Supreme’s website, the new Ssangyong Actyon will be available as two models – the Actyon 2WD priced at RM119,977.20 OTR without insurance and the Actyon AWD priced at RM129,997.20 OTR without insurance. Both are powered by Ssangyong’s 2.0 litre e-XDi engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Other than the AWD system, going step up to the Actyon AWD also gets you larger 18 inch wheels versus 17 inch, ESP stability control with active rollover protection and hill start assist, automatic climate control, an 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, power door mirrors and sunroof, a roof spoiler, and an electric power steering system.

Competitive Supreme does not list Malaysian specs for the engine but at launch time internationally the Korando/Actyon’s 2.0 litre e-XDi engine was listed to make a peak power of 175 PS and a peak torque of 360Nm from 2,000rpm to 3,000rpm, which is up there with some of the best power/torque to displacement ratios for turbodiesel engines. Not sure what the Malaysian spec tune will be – perhaps the same or maybe different as the engine has been listed as an Euro 6 engine.

Six colors are listed – a beige interior matched with tonic grey, space black or grand white, or a grey interior matched with vitamin red, sable grey or silent silver. Competitive Supreme says the new SUV will be available as a CBU import from May 2011 onwards.

Look after the jump for a full gallery of the new Ssangyong SUV as well as the full specs/price list for the 2WD and AWD models. Hat tip to reader Lim for the pointer!

Proreka orders 500 units ATG Sprintex supercharger

UPDATE: Apparently the Aussies have got it wrong – it is actually Proreka who are buying the superchargers for the Proton Satria Neo.

Something very interesting in the Australian news today – Automotive Technology Group (ATG) shared gained nearly 3% after it announced that it had received an AU$600,000 order for 500 units of superchargers to be supplied to Proreka.

Doing some simple maths would price each supercharger at about AU$1,200 or RM3,880 at current exchange rates, almost half the price of one would typically have to pay for a Rotrex C30, like yours truly’s. The first deliveries would begin in October this year and delivery targets are about 50 units a week. ATG goes on to say that these superchargers will be manufactured to suit the Proton Satria Neo.

It looks like the supercharged Proton Satria R3 may be going into production after all! This is indeed some very exciting news, and finally that solid Neo chassis will be receiving the powerful lump that it deserves! The prototype supercharged Neo R3 featured recently made 180 horses and 200Nm. The ATG Sprintex supercharger is if a helical twin screw design, and ATG calls it the world’s most advanced supercharger design. A twin screw positive displacement supercharger has very little lag.

ATG and local company Proreka have also signed an agreement to study the production of the Sprintex supercharger in Malaysia.

Petronas extends Mercedes partnership to DTM series

National oil and gas company Petronas is already the proud partner of the Silver Arrows, and now both companies are taking their relationship into the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) series, which begins this Sunday in Hockenheim.

The Petronas logo will be displayed on the overalls and helmets of all nine Mercedes-Benz DTM drivers, as well as on their AMG Mercedes C-Class cars. Mercedes-Benz’s Formula 3 partner teams Mücke Motorsport and Prema Powerteam will also feature Petronas branding on their Dallara Mercedes F3 racing cars.

It’s more than just stickers, though. As with the Formula 1 team, Petronas motor oils have been specially formulated to meet the unique demands of DTM racing. With piston velocities of over 35 m/s and valve pressures of over 9,000 kg/cm², the 4.0-litre V8 (with 500 Nm and “around 493 hp”) powering the wicked looking C-Class is an extreme environment to work in, and the special Syntium engine oil with integrated additives plays a big role in keeping things running.

“The fact that Petronas has extended its involvement from Formula 1, with our Silver Arrows team, to the DTM emphasises the growing importance of this series. Just as in Formula 1, the research and development work done by our partners at Petronas makes an invaluable contribution to the competitiveness of our cars,” said Norbert Haug, VP of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport.

Goodyear launches Assurance Fuel Max tyre in Malaysia

Goodyear launched a new tyre for the Malaysian market this evening – the Assurance Fuel Max (AFM). A development of the mid range Assurance that was introduced here in 2008, the Fuel Max focuses on savings, from both fuel efficiency and longer mileage. It carries over what’s good about the Assurance, chiefly the Kevlar protection, but adds on the company’s Fuel Saving Technology.

Goodyear says that up to 20% of a car’s fuel consumption is down to the tyres, so reducing rolling resistance was the main aim here. AFM features a full silica compound which reduces friction between the tyre’s molecules and provides high resistance to abrasion, resulting in improved FC and longer life.

Additionally, AFM is built with a hard base under the tread. This base reduces deformation in the crown area and also heat build up, which also contributes to economy. Goodyear also touts even pressure distribution as a feature.

Other noteworthy points include 3D “waffle blades” and Kevlar. The yummy sounding blades in the tread improve lateral interlocking power and circumferential decoupling – basically it’s good for braking distance and grip. Kevlar is a material that’s famous for being “five times stronger than steel”, and lighter too. Having some of this bulletproof vest material in tyres is reassuring in a road network full of potholes.

Goodyear says that AFM delivers 4% better fuel efficiency and 15% longer mileage over a “conventional tyre”. In this case, the conventional tyre is the Goodyear Ducaro GA, which Malaysians are familiar with. The economy figures were derived from a test conducted in Mireval, France using a Citroen C4 1.6 with 195/65 R15 tyres. TUV SUD Automotive GmbH oversaw the test.

For the mileage test, it was conducted internally at Goodyear’s Luxembourg facility. The AFM emerged with a projected tread life of 85,777 km, or 15% better than the Ducaro GA. Of course, actual savings and mileage may vary according to a range of factors, but it should still be in the ballpark.

Fourth-gen Subaru Impreza: Legacy looks, new 2.0L Boxer

You’d have thought amidst the rise of the Koreans in America with their flashy models and the recent troubles faced by the Japanese, tiny little Subaru would have been wiped out, or totally ignored. But the opposite is true. Last year was a record year for Subaru of America – the 263,820 cars they sold was 22% up on 2009 (itself a record year, 14% up in a market that’s down 24%) and 50% up in two years, which is truly impressive.

So it’s no surprise that the fourth-gen Impreza you see here was launched in New York, not Tokyo. While it looks like just another face change, there’s more to it including a longer wheelbase and a new engine. There are two bodystyles – a five-door hatch and a sedan.

Looks wise, the front end follows the theme set by the current Legacy, which is smarter looking than the outgoing Impreza, if a little nondescript. Like its big brother, the wheelarches are given prominence, while the glasshouse is generously sized, unlike many modern cars. Subaru says visibility is a design priority, which is refreshing in a sea of design led products.

Continuing the functional theme, the bottom of the A-pillar has been moved 20 cm forward. This allows for a front door opening that is nearly 13 cm longer for easier entry/exit, further helped by door sills that are 2 cm lower. Rear doors are also larger on both body styles. The wheelbase has been extended by 24 mm to 2,644 mm; this coupled with a scalloped-style front seat backrest frees up 50 mm of rear legroom. Vehicle length and width remain the same

Under the hood is a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine with 148 hp and 197 Nm. It’s from a new engine family that uses twin cams and Dual Active Valve Control System (DAVCS). Compared to the outgoing Impreza’s 2.5L boxer, this 2.0 is 30% more frugal and features a longer stroke to maximize low and mid-range torque.

It’s paired to a five-speed manual or the new Lineartronic CVT. Compared to the CVT in the the Legacy, this version is lighter, quieter and more compact. It also has a 6-speed manual mode with steering paddles.

It’s not a Subaru if there’s no AWD, but this Impreza gets two different systems. In manual transmission models, Continuous AWD uses a viscous-coupling locking center differential to distribute power 50/50. Slippage at either set of wheels will send more power (up to 100%) to the opposite set.

CVT models get Active Torque Split AWD that uses an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch to actively control power distribution. This system can transfer more power to the rear wheels under acceleration and can transfer up to 100% available torque to the rear wheels in response to road conditions.

The WRX and STI versions aren’t out yet. Gallery after the jump.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 – final 997 gets bigger engine, 50 extra horses, improved aero, 600-unit production run

A new generation Porsche 911 is said to be ready for unveiling this year, and the final version of the 997 is this, the GT3 RS 4.0. It’s quite a send off, as this latest GT3 RS gets a bigger 4.0-litre engine, 50 extra horsepower from the flat-six, improved downforce and a production run of just 600 units, which makes it rather special.

As usual, the track inspired GT3 RS uses a naturally aspirated flat-six engine, but capacity is up to 4.0L from 3.8L. It wasn’t lacking in performance with 450 hp and 430 Nm, but figures have jumped to 500 hp at 8,250 rpm and 460 Nm at 5,750 rpm – amazing for an NA engine. This highest displacement 911 engine ever uses forged pistons, titanium connecting rods and the crankshaft of the 911 GT3 RSR race car.

To trim weight, carbon fibre sport bucket seats, front fenders and luggage compartment lid are standard, along with “weight-optimised carpets”. Without a fat driver, the RS tips the scales at 1,360 kg with a full tank of fuel.

Aero wise, air deflection vanes mounted on either side of the front bumper – called ‘flics’ or dive planes – make their first appearance on a production Porsche. They create increased downforce on the front axle, and together with the steeply inclined rear wing, provide “aerodynamics on par with its performance capabilities”. As a result, at the 311 km/h top speed, aero forces exert an additional 190 kg of downforce.

With all of the above, it can lap the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 27 seconds, beating the old car’s 7m33s. With the sole option of a six-speed manual gearbox, the RS 4.0 sprints from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 s, and with gearing designed for the circuit it reaches the 200 km/h mark in under 12 seconds. The outgoing car did 0-200 km/h in 13.3 sec.

What a send off! More pics after the jump.

CCTV traffic summonses to come with photo from May 1

New Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar has been making some positive announcements lately. Last week, the second highest ranking policeman said that his men will no longer ambush motorists from behind trees or in drains, and they are to aim their (speed) guns out in the open.

Today, he announced that motorists caught doing wrong by cameras will be provided a photo as proof, along with the saman ekor, starting from May.

This is an improvement from the current situation, where motorists are expected to take PDRM’s word for it, and cough up the cash without question. Like the previous “get out of the bushes” directive, this is a positive move towards more transparency.

The Deputy IGP expects this new procedure to reduce the chance of mistaken identity. “But if there are still people who claim that police have got the wrong vehicle (even with a picture attached to the summons), they should produce evidence of the mistake at any traffic counter,” he told reporters.

But in areas without CCTV surveillance, the regular way of serving summonses will continue to apply.

How many people can you stuff into a MINI Countryman?

A clown car is a typical circus act – you know, where they stuff as many clowns as possible into a car and then they all emerge from the car in a humorous manner? The amount of people that can be stuffed into a car is mind-boggling sometimes. Ever wonder how many people can you fit into a MINI Countryman? Apparently Hard Rock Hotel Penang tried, with a bunch of their staff and last year’s Miss Hard Rock Penang 2010 finalists. The answer is 14, watch the video above (HD avail) and look after the jump for a photo gallery of the event.
