Button wins the Hungarian GP, Vettel second, Alonso third

Not many would have bet on him at the start, but Jenson Button has won the Hungarian GP in unpredictable weather conditions. Reigning world champ Sebastian Vettel couldn’t catch the Brit, and had to settle for second. Back to becoming a podium regular, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso finished third. The team mates of the podium trio filled places 4 to 6 in the same order, starting from Hamilton, Webber and Massa.

Jenson must love Hungary, as it was the venue of his first ever Formula 1 victory back in 2006 with Honda. This is his second win of the season after that super dramatic race in Canada.

The race started on damp tarmac, and all cars started on intermediate tyres. Pole man Vettel made a great start, pulling ahead of the McLarens, who were side by side in the first set of corners. Hamilton made it stick and was second.

In the meantime, the Silver Arrows of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher made brilliant starts to occupy 4th and 5th, having started in 7th and 9th respectively. In contrast, Adrian Sutil (8th on grid) and Sergio Perez (10th on grid) made bad starts.

Double world champ Alonso, who got Ferrari back to winning ways in the British GP, was on a charge, and overtook both Mercedes cars by the third lap, the same lap where DRS was enabled despite plenty of sideways action. By now, there was a good battle for the lead with Lewis challenging Vettel; the Brit finally taking over when Seb went wide on lap 5.

Speaking of getting wide, Alonso was clearly pushing very hard and visited the runoff areas more than once.

The second and third sectors were getting dry, and everyone was waiting to see who would blink first and dive in for slicks. It was Red Bull for Mark Webber on lap 11. He came out blazing, and the subsequent two laps saw all the front runners pit, starting with Button. The earlier the better, and Button came out to harass Vettel, succeeding on lap 13. Webber passes Alonso for fourth. Hamilton widens his lead.

Meanwhile, Team Lotus’ Jarno Trulli retired on lap 19, joined later by teammate Kovalainen on lap 60. Lotus Renault GP’s Nick Heidfeld provided some drama on lap 25, when his car seemed to explode and catch fire when exiting the pitlane. Another man out is Schumi on lap 29 when he fought with Massa.

The list now reads Hamilton, Button, Vettel, Webber and Alonso. The Ferrari man pitted earlier for fresh rubber and took Webber’s place. The next piece of drama was on lap 46, when leader Hamilton spun at the chicane, letting pass Button for the lead. The rain came into play again at about lap 49, and Button concedes the lead to Lewis, while Vettel spun more than once. Hamilton pitted for inters on lap 50, but Button, now the leader again, stayed out on slicks. Alonso did the same.

This proved to be the right move, as the track dried up. Hamilton is then passed by Alonso, and after a drive through penalty, he is out of contention, yet another frustrating afternoon for the ex-champ. The positions now read Button, Vettel and Alonso, which remained till the end. Ever the fighter, Hamilton didn’t give up after all that’s happened to him, and overtook Webber for fourth. This happened in the midst of a packed midfield scrap.

McLaren is on form, and Vettel doesn’t look invincible anymore, but he still leads the championship by a big margin – Button is fifth and 100 points behind the German’s 234. In the constructors list, Red Bull leads McLaren 383 to 280 points.

The Formula 1 circus will now have a summer break, returning to Spa in Belgium from 26-28 August.

Great Wall Motor comes to Malaysia – Haval diesel SUV at RM120k, Wingle pick-up truck starts from RM59,888!

UPDATE: Mega hi-res gallery added after the jump

There’s a new auto brand in town, and it’s the Great Wall from China. Brought in by franchise holder Green Oranges Sdn Bhd, the brand, which is privately owned and named after China’s famous world wonder, will be introduced to Malaysians via two models – the Haval H5 SUV and the Wingle pick-up truck.

The two are the brand’s most traveled models, and are sold in Europe and Australia, among other markets. What this means is that they would have passed the higher safety and emissions standards that these markets require.

Let’s start with the Haval H5. It’s a five-seater mid sized SUV that’s much larger than the other Chinese SUV in our market, the Chery Tiggo. With a length of 4,649 mm and wheelbase of 2,700 mm, the Haval is 84 mm longer than a Honda CR-V, and almost all that length advantage (80 mm) is in the wheelbase.

And at 1,735 mm, the Haval also stands taller than the current crop of SUVs except for the similarly boxy Nissan X-Trail.

But we reckon that the Haval’s main selling point isn’t size, but its diesel engine, as the only other SUVs offering oil burners are the Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevy Captiva, both priced much higher.

This 2.0 TCI engine is a modern common rail unit (CRDI system by Bosch) with Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT, by Borg Warner), and it produces 148 hp and 310 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 2,800 rpm. Mated to a 5-speed automatic with Shiftronic, fuel consumption is rated at 6.8L per 100 km.

The Haval is a part time 4WD machine, and changing modes from 2WD (rear driven) to AWD can be done on the fly at speeds of up to 70 km/h. The standard kit list includes dual airbags, ABS, EBD, Traction Control, leather seats (with electric adjustment for driver), reverse camera, cruise control, auto air con and a full colour touch screen factory head unit with DVD/USB/Bluetooth compatibility.

One unique feature not found elsewhere is a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that’s displayed at the rear view mirror.

The other model is the Wingle double cab pick-up truck. This is the latest version of the Wingle, and it features a smart looking VW style nose in place of the cartoonish face that some might remember testing on our roads some time back.

Its Isuzu roots are obvious from the dash, but the Wingle has steering audio controls and adjustable height headlamps, among other standard kit. Dual airbags, ABS and EBD are also in the list, as are leather seats.

The Wingle is powered by a 2.5-litre commonrail diesel engine with 107 hp and 300 Nm of torque, the latter produced from 1,800 to 2,400 rpm. The Mitsubishi derived turbo unit isn’t the VGT type, but the standard type. No auto option for the Wingle; the engine is exclusively paired to a five-speed manual ‘box. You can however, choose from 4X2 or 4X4 variants. Shift on the fly is available on the latter.

Both Great Wall models will be locally assembled at Green Oranges’ own plant in Gurun, Kedah, but the few early units are brought in from China, which is a common arrangement. Green Oranges CEO Mohd Azli SM Nasimuddin said that CKD production will start in mid August, and assured that parts will not be a problem – the company already has RM2 million worth of parts kept in Segambut, and all 12 dealerships nationwide are 3S centres.

If all goes well, Malaysia will be the right-hand drive production hub for these two Great Wall models. Green Oranges is already stepping into the Cambodian market as we type, and today signed an MoU to collaborate with a Cambodian GLC.

The Haval SUV is priced at RM120,000 OTR while the Wingle is priced at RM59,888 for the 4X2 and RM69,888 for the 4X4. The SUV comes with 5 years warranty (or 150k km), 5 years free maintenance and 5 years auto assist, while the Wingle comes with a 3-year warranty.

If you want to check the cars out in the metal, head on to the new wing of Sunway Pyramid, where Green Oranges have set up an outdoor display area.

Huge hi-res gallery and exclusive driving impressions are after the jump!

BHPetrol confirms commitment to grassroot motorsports

Local oil and gas company BHPetrol has once again affirmed its commitment in developing budding young racing latents, via the BHPetrol Racing Team which currently concentrates on go-karting. Young racing drivers including Daim Hishammudin, Tan Wei Ron, Ang Kok Wee, Tanapon “Boyd” Nokkaew and Gary Koh have all flourished from the company’s efforts.

These five drivers are now competing in many go-kart championships across the continent including the Asia Karting Open Championship (AKOC) and the Rotax Max Challenge. Daim Hishammudin, the youngest of them all is currently leading in the latter.

BHPetrol’s managing director Mr. Tan Kim Thiam said during an appreciation event on 26th July, “BHPetrol Racing Team allows potential race drivers a foundation to withstand and build good racing acument as they evolve from Go-Kart Racing into more complex motorsport categories and eventually Formula 1 Racing.”

“Just the drivers alone and a good kart do not guarantee the win. Motorsports is an art craft on its own. It combines the right balance between the machines to the drivers and the mental preparation to emotional confidence. We are happy to say that we are on the right track in having that mix here,” added the team’s technical director Rodney Magness who has vast experience in the arena.

The local motorsport scene in general is growing and it is good to see the corporate industry investing some of their resources in developing future talents. Next up on BHPetrol Racing Team’s list of races is the AKOC in the Philippines happening this weekend.

2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Dashboard Teaser Pix

Mercedes-Benz has teased the next generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class interior, shown here with covered with the optional stitched ARTICO man-made leather.

There’s a TFT LCD screen to display the COMAND interface, but the technology is complemented by retro styled components such as the circular air conditioning vents that pay homage to the Mercedes-Benz cars of the yesteryears.

What do you think? I think it’s definitely a class above the model it replaces, but professional studio photography can be deceiving so we reserve our comments until we get to see a real car.

The new B-Class will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid September 2011. Look after the jump for the rest of the teaser pix.

BMW i3 and i8 electric concepts unveiled in Frankfurt

We’re here reporting live from the international revealing of the new BMW i3 and i8 concepts at the Frankfurt Messe. BMW revealed the two cars in a dark hall, and while waiting for the press conference to start, the disguised i8 prototype that we’ve seen before in the past drove past us on the main stage, in complete eerie silence that made me do a double take and wonder if I had really seen a car go past, or was it some funky 3D projection.

The BMW i family consists of only two cars at the moment – the i3 and the i8. The i3 is immediately recognisable as one of those city cars that seem to be such a popular idea these days – light, compact, fuel efficient, easy to park, seats four and has some kind of luggage area – 250 litres in this case. The i3 promises to travel up to 250 km on a single charge. We’ll get more in depth with the technicalities of the car in a future story.

At the top of the range is the BMW i8 Concept, a 2+2 sports car that has evolved through the times since it was first unveiled in 2009 as the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept. Like the 2009 concept, the car continues to be powered by both an electric motor and a combustion engine, now a 220 hp, 300 Nm 3-cylinder petrol instead of a turbodiesel.

BMW refers to these cars as part of the BMW i family, which is quite small at the moment – just two members. But like BMW’s regular series production cars which range from a 1 all the way up to a 7, not to mention all the X models, the company says there’s definitely room for new members to be introduced in the future.

The first production i cars will go on sale at the end of 2013. BMW won’t reveal any sales targets at the moment – they say that it will depend on how the market will be at the time of launch. But they must have some kind of internal target, as it says the cars will be profitable and will contribute to the company’s finances from the very beginning, and the R&D costs it took to develop these cars must be amortised.

Initially, these cars will be more appropriate for high density urban areas, thus BMW will be targeting these markets. Major cities will definitely be in the picture. A lot of these potential markets will be driven by regulations – for example London city’s congestion charges will make EVs like the BMW i3 make commercial sense.

Will these cars ever be available in Malaysia? According to a BMW Malaysia spokesperson, an introduction is definitely possible if there is a strong business case for it. But it is still too early to say at the moment, because of various factors such as the infrastructure to support EVs, consumer education and government policies.

Will Malaysia be ready for something like this by end 2013?

CKD Volvo S60 announced: T4 RM220k, T5 RM255k

For those who have been dreaming of a Volvo S60 but found the current CBU prices a little too rich for their bank accounts, good news for you – locally assembled versions will be launched soon.

Two CKD versions will be on sale – the T4 and the T5. The Volvo S60 T4 will use a 1.6 litre inline-4 turbocharged direct injection engine making 180 horsepower and 270Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed Powershift gearbox. It is rated to consume only 7 litres per 100km on a combined cycle. The estimated selling price for the CKD Volvo S60 T4 is RM220,000.

For an estimated price tag of RM255,000 you can get the CKD Volvo S60 T5 (down from RM288k for the CBU T5), powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged direct injection inline-4 engine mated to a 6-speed Powershift gearbox. This engine makes 240 horsepower and 320Nm of torque. The T5 also includes the Pedestrian Detection. feature, which detects pedestrians who walk onto the road in front of the car and will warn the driver, and if necessary, apply full braking power if the driver does not respond in time.

Volvo Car Malaysia also says the first 60 customers who book their CKD S60 T4 and T5 from today will receive a special surprise. According to Volvo Car Malaysia president Goran Larsson, it will make the S60 look more stunning, so we’re guessing some exterior aesthetic enhancements like a bodykit or something.

Toyota to introduce a low-priced car for China in 2013

According to reports, Toyota is planning to introduce a low-priced small car designed for the Chinese market as early as 2013, with production planned at two factories in the country.

The new car is likely to be based on the its existing small sedan designs, led by the Etios, which made its debut in India last December. While the company intends to keep costs down by using Etios parts, the new vehicle – to be powered by a 1.5 litre engine – is to be slightly larger than the Etios to accomodate preferences in the Chinese market.

The reports add that Toyota is set to spend about 40 billion yen in preparation for local production of the car, which it aims to sell around 200,000 units a year of. Two factories, joint venture plants in Tianjin with China FAW and in Guangzhou with Guangzhou Automobile, will churn out the new tyke when the time comes.

Renault Twingo facelift to debut in Frankfurt

Renault has released the first image of its refreshed second-generation Twingo, which will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The automaker says that the A-segment offering is the first production vehicle to feature cues inspired by the brand’s new design identity, as seen on the likes of the Frendzy Concept.

As is the case, the face gets a large dose of treatment, with a clearer demarcation of bonnet and bumper lines and a Renault logo that has been enlarged and centred in a more vertical position. There are no details, but its arrival at Frankfurt should take care of that.
