2016 Honda Civic FC launched in Malaysia – 1.8L and 1.5L VTEC Turbo, 3 variants, from RM111k

Civic lead 1

One of the most anticipated car launches in recent times happened this morning with the official unveiling of the 2016 Honda Civic in Malaysia. The tenth-generation FC Civic is available in three CKD locally-assembled variants – the 1.8L, 1.5L Turbo and 1.5L Turbo Premium with all the bells and whistles. The on-the-road excluding insurance prices are RM110,426.51, RM124,076.29 and RM131,883.37, respectively.

The new Civic’s fastback shape looks like nothing else in the market now, never mind the C-segment. The “Best Civic Ever” also looks like none before it. The design is certainly bold, and will be the FC’s main selling point. Like or loathe?

The sculptured FC is rather imposing in the metal for a C-segment sedan, and the dimensions correspond. At 4,630 mm long and 1,799 mm wide, the new Civic is a full 105 mm longer and 44 mm wider than the ninth-gen FB it replaces. The larger footprint is coupled with a 19 mm reduction in height (1,416 mm) for a sleek appearance. Check out our New vs Old gallery of the FC head-to-head with the FB.

Civic side

The wheelbase – cut by 30 mm from eighth-gen FD to FB – is back to where the revolutionary FD was, at 2,700 mm. Boot volume is 519 litres. Honda claims more interior space for both front and rear passengers. No more full flat floor for the rear quarters, though.

Malaysian buyers get to choose from two engines – a 1.8 litre i-VTEC naturally-aspirated engine and the new 1.5 litre VTEC Turbo engine. Both are paired to G-design shift CVT transmissions (different units in 1.8 and 1.5 Turbo), which replace the five-speed conventional torque converter automatic employed in the previous two generations.

The R-series SOHC NA engine is a carryover with improvements. It makes 141 PS at 6,500 rpm and 174 Nm of torque at 4,300 rpm. Retuned to match the more efficient CVT (over the 5AT), fuel consumption and emissions have been improved over the previous Civic 1.8. Honda claims combined FC of 6.3 litres per 100 km (15.9 km/l). 0-100 km/h is done in 10.4 seconds.

Civic rear 1

The L15B7 direct-injection downsized turbo unit makes 173 PS at 5,500 rpm and 220 Nm of torque from 1,700 to 5,500 rpm. It effectively replaces the 155 PS/190 Nm 2.0 litre NA engine in the local line-up. There’s no other automatic gearbox for the turbo engine other than this CVT, even in the US, although China gets a 6MT option.

The move from NA to turbo for the local range topper is more for efficiency than anything (2.4L power without the associated fuel costs, Honda says), just like what the Europeans have been doing for some time now. Everything is improved over the old 2.0 NA – power, torque, fuel economy and emissions – but the Civic Turbo is not a full-on sports sedan, despite the evocative “VTEC Turbo” badging. Claimed combined FC is 5.8 litres per 100 km (17.2 km/l) and 0-100 km/h is done in 8.2 seconds.

Osamu Takezawa, the Civic’s assistant large project leader (deputy chief engineer), explained that Honda’s choice of a CVT gearbox for the turbo engine, besides helping fuel economy, mitigates turbo lag. Also, the turbo model has an engine oil change warning light.

The new Civic’s body may be 22 kg lighter than before, but torsional stiffness is up by 25%. It sits on front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link suspension. The dual-pinion variable ratio EPS steering (claimed to provide better response and linearity) turns 17-inch five-spoke wheels on the Turbo (215/50 tyres) and 16-inch rims on the 1.8 NA (215/55). Honda claims greatly improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels, and “class-leading quietness”.

We move on to the equipment, which is pretty long. Standard across the board are six airbags (dual front, side, curtain), VSA, electronic parking brake with auto brake hold, cruise control, eight-way powered driver’s seat, LED daytime running lights and a seven-inch touchscreen factory head unit, with multi-angle reverse camera. Also standard is the cool full-colour LCD digital meter panel.

Also standard are keyless entry and push start, remote engine start (key fob starts engine and air con, works from 10 metres) and walk away auto door lock (auto locks the doors once you’re two metres away from the car, or 30 seconds after you’ve left it), features that will impress showroom goers.

Civic interior 2

Interestingly, all Malaysian Civics will come with rear air con vents, which were not present in the top Thai-spec RS Turbo we tested last month. A welcome addition. Our CKD cars will also get a damped action for the glovebox lid, which falls shockingly hard in the Thai Civic. Unlike the base Thai car, our Civic 1.8 gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and we get black-themed cabins across the board.

Honda Malaysia says that it customises features and equipment levels to suit our market, which has high expectations, instead of just taking what Thailand has wholesale.

Opt for the 1.5 Turbo and one will get to enjoy leather seats, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, 17-inch wheels, steering paddle shifters and brushed aluminium trim. The range-topping 1.5 Turbo Premium further adds on LED headlamps, LED foglamps, navigation and dual-zone auto air con (single-zone auto for the rest). Unique headlamps aside (halogen projectors for the rest) the 1.5 Turbo Premium is distinguishable by its chrome door handles.

Five colours are available, and they are Crystal Black Pearl, Dark Ruby Red Pearl (as per the City and more recently, HR-V), Modern Steel Metallic, White Orchid Pearl and Lunar Silver Metallic. The latter two are new colours; add RM300 for pearl white. As usual, a full range of Modulo accessories are optional (five-piece bodykit for RM4,650), along with window tint.

Once again, the new Honda Civic is priced at RM110,726, for the 1.8L, RM124,376 for the 1.5L Turbo and RM132,155 for the 1.5L Turbo Premium, OTR excluding insurance. The car has Malaysia’s Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) status and Honda expects a five-star ASEAN NCAP crash test rating.

The standard Honda Malaysia five-year unlimited mileage warranty applies, and the service interval is 10,000 km, with five times alternate free labour when servicing. Read our full review of the 2016 Honda Civic.

You wanna bancuh Teh Tarik? Just open your front bonet and you get FREEEE boiled water splashing out from the bonet.

Honda knows we Malaysian likes Teh Tarik, so they purposely design the car to overheat easily so that we can bancuh our own Teh Tarik and enjoy it whenever we like in our beloved car.

Pity the Toyota salesman. Nobody is touching their cars. Vios is a big failure cause Honda City is much better buy.

Camry is a failure cause your pay RM160k for a car with 2 airbags and no VSC

Hilux is a failure cause the No 1 high spec truck is still the Range Rover

And now Altis. At Rm139k, comes with just 2 airbags. The cheaper version is RM128k but 2 airbags and no VSC.

This Civic, at RM111, got 6 airbags, rear vents, VSC and so many more.

So much hype with this new Civic.

But most important is the price. Malaysians see PRICE. If price is good, it will sell well. But at Rm114k, is it worth it? I might as well add Rm10k more and buy an Accord.

This was the MAIN reason previous Civic was a big failure before and people just went ahead buying an Accord instead.

People rather add a bit more to get a proper big D class sedan if it is only a few thousand more.

Nowadays you go bargain for an Accord, can even get RM128k also. And that OTR. Infact, some have bargained to RM125k also. just go and add nice leather seats for RM2k later.

Big headache….buy Civic small C class sedan (albeit 6 airbags) for RM114k or buy huge luxurious Mercedes feel D Segment Accord for RM125k OTR

Both Honda and Toyota have failures like the Altis and Civic cause they price is so close to their larger D segment.

Ask most Malaysians, buying a proper large D segment is far better value and more comfortable than buying a kuci Civic for nearly the same price.

DRB makes tons of $$$ selling Honda cars. Why they still tak malu ask for bailout and buyout from gomen …2.75 Billion RM?
I think car buyers should stop buying any car/motor vehicle from DRB related companies.
It is daylight robbery…volup all our taxes, and then ask for more bailouts when at the same time Honda car sales are booming.
Don’t you guys think it is IMMORAL FOR DRB to ask gomen to pay Proton’s suppliers when they untung cukup cukup from Honda sales?

Pricing is not bad. Cheaper than the 9th gen when it was first launched, if i’m not mistaken. But I would get the mid spec 1.5 turbo, and save around RM8k. The premium spec is quite expensive for only getting LED lights and dual zone AC. While those are nice, i’d rather spend Rm8k for a better hifi sound system, cos I presume the Civic here comes with the base 6 speaker system, correct? US Civics come with a more powerful 10 speaker system.

Peugeot 308/408 & VW Jetta/Golfalready introduced downsized engine with turbo few years earlier. Rear airconds are already included in these models then. These models are very popular in Europe as they have good handling and straight line speed, but not here due to poor reliability of the gearbox. And dont forget about Ford Focus too. Single handedly revive the c-segment seems like an over statement.

the market trend was going towards compact suvs, rendering c segment sedans irrelevant, however, with the new civic, it beats the existing competition with looks, interior design & practicality, turbo power, japanese reliability, and a lengthy list of standard equipment at a decent price,

making it an almost the defacto choice among the consumers in that price range….

When the jetta came, its expensive compare to the civic, bland in and out, and equipment list is sparse…

the new pug 408 is 20k more expensive

        • Are you sure Japanese reliability? Since 5 years ago jap car not anywhere reliable. Lots of my frd and uber driver shares the same view too. Even my city gives lot of problem. Or u should say the spare part is easier to get and cheaper then it sounds more make sense. Compare to last gen jetta with new civic?lol. Turbo power? focus gives a punchy 180ps 240nm also. And 408 also push a 0-100 @ 8.2sec also, even it’s heavier. New k3 will come with turbo also

Obviously you haven’t actually driven these car hard. Once driven you will be surprised that these cars that have gross weight nearly 2 tonnes have good straightline speed. In general, braking power of japanese cars are weak compared to europeans, therefore european cars give you more sense of security during emergency braking. New turbbo civic is fast because it is easily over 100kg lighter than Jetta/408/Focus.

Yes this car can achieve 0-100km in 6.8-7.3sec as tested worldwide. Usually car can achieve much faster than what is stated by the manufacturer. When you look at VW website, 0-100km for Jetta is 8.3 Seconds which is not true. Jetta can get about 7 seconds+

Jetta may be fast but I think VW will spend more time in workshop than actual driving.

Meanwhile Honda owners will spend more time on road and driving than spending time with tow truck and VW mechanics.

    • In facts c segment family car is not solely designed for performance. 0-100 time does not really matter much.for your daily driving low and mid end punch is way practical. Only test drive then u will know. Just like fd2r, it is good to high rev it to get max power, but the low end of rpm is sluggish, not as practical for daily drive. Different engine is designed to serve different purpose

I don’t think the acceleration time 0-100km/h below 9sec is bad consider that most of the 2.0 NA engine can’t achieve this result. Jetta though is lower horsepower with 160ps but the torque is higher than civic 1.5T by 20Nm (Civic 220Nm vs Jetta 240Nm). The acceleration of the vehicle is not only depend on horsepower or torque but also the “transmission”.

Civic is using CVT whereby Jetta is using dual-clutch based gearbox. CVT is commonly known as great for fuel economic and smoothness ride but the responsiveness time is not as quick as dual-clutch. Dual-clutch gearbox is save half of work compare to traditional automatic where 2 sets of gears employed. Dual-clutch concept is to save the gear shifting time to achieve greater power (less power loss) and save fuel.

Jetta can achieve such a good sprint time is also thanks to its dual-clutch (if don’t talk about the reliability). If Jetta apply traditional 6-speed AT, the sprint time will drop at least half of second.

    • Agree with that. Instead of looking at 0-100 time, I will be more interested about a car performance base on like 30-70, 80-120, or even 100-200 time. This can really benchmark your engine on different aspect. For 0-100, how you launch your cars matter a lot, hence it is not that fair. And also when u perform overtake on highway or main road, timing like 80-120 or 100-200 matters more. A car have good 0-100 time doesn’t really mean it has a good 80-120 time.

Good pricing I think most will be comfortable with the base spec as it has all the required goodies and for those who have the extra 20k+ can opt for more power n toys. I just hope from on onwards all other Honda launches will be like this – 6 airbags and VSC as standard along with other goodies like reverse camera and keyless entry. If they can maintain that with EEV pricing then the entire market could very well be theirs to own and control since UMW is hopeless.

As long as it sushi or to be exact HONDA, people will forget quickly about their failure from past and present even it can caused death. Why?because as long as its non Malaysian made, its ok to take their life. But when Malaysian made brand achieve highest level of safety for cars, people will bash and always search for negative point. Well, this is the country that we are living in right now. THIS IS MALAYSIA!!NO WONDER SUSAH NAK MAJU. BERTUHANKAN PRODUK LUAR..BILA NEGARA X MAJU SALAHKAN NEGARA SENDIRI.

    • The term Malaysian made brand achieve highest level safety for cars is highly misleading. Look at ANCAP score and even Honda City scored higher than Preve. Honda Civic is given IIHS Top Safety Pick+ this year so the safety is top notch. You also seem to forget that the number of Preve and Suprima sold is very low so when you talk about safety over 98% of Proton owners are Saga, Persona, Wira, Waja etc that has very poor safety ratings so get your facts right.
If you are talking about CBU cars then yes there is very little contribution to our country except the import tax but most of the Honda cars are CKD with the plants here contributing to the local economy by hiring many local workers plus using local parts so their contribution to the country is not any less than Proton but i almost forgot needs a local car brand needed RM1.5B bailout so i wonder which company is more beneficial to the country now???

P1 safety is “highest level”? Which model of P1 has better safety features than Civic? Is P1 sending their car to IIHS for crash test especially the small overlap test?

Look at the quality, engine, transmission, after-sales-service etc, do you think P1 can be better than Hxnda? I am not fan of Hxnda, but you take the P1 to compare it totally unacceptable.

P1 need to change the entire management team if they wanted to survive. The marketing strategy, product positioning, pricing, after sales services etc are completely wrong. If without excise duty tax on foreign cars P1 should have bankrupt much earlier.

This car is fairly priced in the segment with all the gadgets etc given the disadvantage of a market with high car tariffs. I have have mention earlier, this Civic will get the rear air condition vents as taken from the example of the earlier Honda City in Thailand where the model there lack rear air condition vents.

I hope that the local Honda distributor here will continue to give what the car customer wants and I eagerly await the next generation Honda CRV 7 seater which are rumoured to carry a new 2.0 turbo engine and this current 1.5 turbo engine.

I always had this odd sensation that car manufacturers doesn’t bother about rear passengers safety. If you would look at Image ID – 505970, I’m 180cm tall and I could never fit into the rear of most cars without my head rubbing into the ceiling. Surprisingly the older Myvi didn’t had that issue, but the Mazda 6 sedan have (had to opt for a wagon because of that), Hybrid Camry have that issue as well. Hot hatchbacks, for obvious reasons my legs and head are sandwiched between the roof and the front seat. The reason I brought this up is because of an accident that happened while I was younger as the car rolled over with the rear slightly squished, so nowadays I have a phobia sitting in the rear because I’m afraid that my neck would snap if the car were to roll over.

For me, i will choose civic 1.8 instead of the two 1.5turbo…..
turbo mid spec is about 13k more expensive, give u leather seat, auto-dim rear view mirror, 17″ rim , paddle shift and the most important , engine.
But, how to justify this cost?
    leather set= 1.5k more?
    auto-dim= 500~1k more?
    17″= 1k more?
    paddle shift= 1.5k more?
so, the engine need about 7k~8k more? ???
    Can anyone explain the cost??

The turbo power is equivalent to a 2.4 car. Upgrade from 1.8 to 2.4 power is definitely worth more than 7-8k. For Example, accord 2.4 vs 2.0 high spec price diff about 26k. A much powerful car will have different driving experience.

Do you know how to calculate? There is a certain portion of the money to sustain the profit margin… even 7-8k for a DI and turbo engine, i think it is reasonable. People just calculate base on the face value, never knowing manufacturer needs certain profit margin.
