Pre-facelift W204 C63 AMG…

We saw the W204 C-Class get its mid-life facelift in December last year, and shortly after that Mercedes-Benz pushed off the latest special edition pre-facelifted high performance version of the W204 – the C63 AMG Affalterbach Edition (Affalterbach is AMG’s base in southern Germany), only 30 to be made and to be sold in Canada only.

… and this is the facelift! Which do you prefer?

And just unveiled today is the new W204 C63 AMG facelift. It’s become more toned down and less aggressive compared to the pre-facelift C63 AMG, mainly because the extra bulges on the engine hood is now gone (compare with the pre-facelift W204 in the first image).

The grille that shows off the large silver arrow now has a single horizontal chrome line instead of the double line of the pre-facelift W204 AMG car. And of course those round fogs have been replaced with LED daytime running lights.

The engine bay houses the same 6.2 litre V8 making 451 horsepower in stock form, but the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic gearbox has now been replaced by the 7-speed MCT version of the gearbox, which is still pretty much constructed like an automatic gearbox but uses a computer actuated clutch instead of a torque converter. It’s no slouch in shift speed, and does little tricks like throttle blipping for downshifts to keep the drive sporty.

The chassis has been revised with new suspension stabilizers and thicker anti-roll bars. Fuel consumption is said to be 10% better than the pre-facelift thanks to the switch to the MCT transmission and a new power steering pump that is more efficient.

Also available is an AMG Performance Package that brings power output up by 30 horsepower, and being a normally aspirated engine it’s not as simple as tweaking the boost on a turbocharged engine. You have to earn that 30 horses via a lighter crankshaft as well as forged pistons and conrods which are included in the AMG Performance Package.

To complete the kit, the AMG upgrade package adds red-painted brake calipers, a carbon fiber bootlid spoiler and an AMG performance steering wheel in a combination nappa leather and Alcantara.

This 6.2L V8 could likely be replaced by the downsized turbocharged 5.5L V8 in the next incarnation of the C-Class so this is going to be the biggest engined C-Class you’re going to get!

Do not compare please. But if you have to, use the M3. You will definitely change you perception after you have driven a C, even if its just the baseline C180. Anyway the pre-facelift look meaner.

Am i the only one prefering the pre facelift version? My only gripe is that now almost everything has that LED thingy. Why can’t they have LED AND the foglamp as well? If i were to choose I would prefer the foglamp anytime. Much more functional and less “douchy”

the best would be to buy the facelift C63 and get a C63 owner pre-facelift and ask him if he would like to swap his old front with your new front. Then it’ll be perfect

daylight running leds are a trend. customers demand items like these and thats a fact. mercedes like so many other manufacturers are just doing what their customers want. even the new citreon DS3 has them and people love and are buying plenty of those cars in europe at the moment. i have no idea why people are complaining about the leds.

daylight running lights is not only a thing which is required by the customers, but is also a safety requirement in most countries in europe, particularly those countries in the north, where visibility during the day is like visibility here during dusk/dawn.

Cars like the AMGs remove fog lights as well because their engine operates at a very high temperature, and therefore it needs as much air going into the engine bay to cool it down. For eg, the e92 M3 requires 17.000 litres of air per minute, to cool the engine down and for the workings of the engine. so with foglights on the corner ducts, u only have that centre duct working.

The pre-facelift AMG model has foglights.
Anyway those LEDs on the bumper are LED foglights, not DRL.

Prefer the pre facelift rather than this. pre facelift looks better and more classy and elegance, whereby this facelift version look a little bit sport and the ugly headlamps. i guess ppl buying mercedes is ppl who desire for class and elegance. so is better wait for the all new c-klass on 2014 rather than get this.

Wa, 6.2l V8, don’t know how much road tax (a year)will cost this babe if buy in Malaysia…….
    Surely 50k++ maybe?? Anyone??

I’ve seen M5 road tax is RM11k for 5.0 litre. I guess for 6.2 litre engine could be in the range of RM18k to RM25k, as the road tax structure is like an exponential graph after certain amount…

      • I’ve seen a S550 outside of the Menara KFC,Jalan Sultan Ismail. The road tax was 29k.

Don’t get me wrong, i love the pre-facelift but I think MB did a good move with the facelift version… if you guys probably didnt know, they trickle down the headlamps design from the Mercedes SL, and if you have ever seen a SL in person… you’ll be a fan of the facelift. Just the thought of having hints of the SL on your C is a gift.
