Audi has released the new range topping model of its Q5 series – the Audi SQ5 TDI. Boosted by two turbochargers, its 3.0 diesel produces 313 hp and a mighty 650 Nm of torque between 1,450 and 2,800 rpm. This is good for 0-100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. Top speed is limited to the usual 250 km/h.
The two turbochargers are connected in series via a flap. Cylinder head cooling, the timing and lift of the intake cam shafts, the pistons, their oil-jet cooling and the piston pins have been specially designed for the high-performance concept. The common rail system is pressured at 2,000 bar and injects as many as eight shots of fuel into the cylinders per cycle. A sound actuator in the exhaust system provides the tunes.
Despite the performance, fuel consumption stands at just 7.2 litres per 100 km. Innovative thermal management, start-stop and a regulated oil pump all contribute to this figure. An eight-speed auto and quattro AWD with torque vectoring transfer power to the road.
Sport suspension lowers the Q5 body by 30 mm. The optional Audi drive select system can be expanded upon request to include dynamic steering system, which has stepless variable steering ratio.
Looks wise, the SQ5 is distinguished by a platinum grey single-frame grille with double bars, a roof spoiler and modified bumpers. The high-gloss package and the aluminum-look exterior mirrors are other signs. Audi offers the top Q5 in crystal effect paint finishes – choose between Panther Black or the pictured Estoril Blue.
Inside, the power-adjustable sport seats come standard in Pearl Nappa leather/Alcantara. Leather in a choice of four colours is available as an option. Brushed aluminum inlays are standard. Options include Carbon Atlas, Piano finish and the new Aluminum/Beaufort wood black trim panels.
The dials are grey faced with a “3D” S badge, while the needles are white and the pedals and shift paddles have an aluminum look. Additional visual highlights are the S gear lever knob, S badges on the door sills, the start button and the specially-shaped steering wheel, the S welcome screen and the lighting package.
The SQ5 TDI, the first S model with a diesel engine, will roll into European dealerships in the first quarter of 2013. Yummy!
