Petronas Syntium Team seeks to defend MMER crown

The Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) returns to Sepang this week, and reigning champions Petronas Syntium Team (PST) have only one thing in mind – to defend their crown.

Bringing both Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 cars from Japan where the team is leading the Super Taikyu Series, PST will be running the same winning car from MMER 2011 with the same driver line-up of Nobuteru Taniguchi, Masataka Yanagida and Dominic Ang. Tatsuya Kataoka, Farique Hairuman and Melvin Moh will be piloting the sister Gullwing, which came in third overall last year.

Last year, PST gave the SLS AMG GT3 a dream regional debut by taking overall victory. It was the race car’s first ever victory in long-distance endurance racing worldwide and PST was given the “Best Racing Performance” award at the AMG Customer Sports Season Finale.

Two-time overall winner of the MMER, PST wants to create history this year by becoming the first team to win the race three times. This year’s MMER, the 13th edition, will be flagged off at 12 noon on September 1.

“The MMER means a lot to us as it is the home country for the team and also a place where we have gone through nail-biting battles for victory. Our goal is to repeat that success and defend the title, making it a triple MMER crown. We have been preparing hard for the race and we look forward to a smooth and victorious race,” said Datuk David Wong, PST team principal.

In the six-round Super Taikyu Series, PST is topping the leaderboard after three rounds, on track in their pursuit of a fifth consecutive Super Taikyu title. For the fourth round of Super Taikyu, teams have a choice of either racing at Okayama International Circuit on August 25-16 or at the MMER, which PST is doing.
