Borgward teases SUV with sketch – Frankfurt debut

Borgward SUV sketch

After 54 years, previously-defunct brand Borgward is set to unveil its first modern production car on September 15 at Frankfurt. The SUV was first seen wrapped in camouflage, and in another image, with its skirt lifted at the back.

In this latest teaser, a conceptual sketch of the SUV’s rear has emerged. It’s unlikely that the production car will sport those massive rims, but from the looks of it, aside from a lower profile, the design of the Borgward appears to be very fluid. Those rear lights come in a stream of LEDs and a protruding bumper also stands out in the sketch.

Backed by Chinese carmaker Foton, CarAdvice reports that Christian Borgward – grandson of founder Carl Borgward – is working together with former Saab and Daimler executive Karl-Heinz Knoess and ex-Saab designer Einar Hareide. All three are involved in the project.

The company has big plans for its SUV, which is rumoured to come with a plug-in hybrid system. Will it propel Borgward to achieve an annual production target of 800,000 vehicles by 2020? The task won’t be easy, that’s for sure.
