The Awan Besar R&R on the Kesas Highway, Shah Alam-bound, will be closed to motorists for an indefinite period. This is to facilitate repair works following a fire that broke out yesterday afternoon, the highway operator announced.

The closure includes toilet and surau facilities at the R&R, but does not affect the two adjacent petrol stations that will operate as usual.

The Star reports that seven shops were destroyed in the fire, and that a witness claimed that he heard an explosion coming from a furniture shop that was closed on Sunday.

City Fire and Rescue Department chief operations officer Samsol Maarif Saibani said 32 firemen rushed to the scene after a distress call was received at 1.35pm. Seven of the 15 shops were already destroyed when the bomba arrived, and they managed to put out the fire 40 minutes later.
