The 2017 Toyota Corolla facelift has been revealed in North America, the first major revamp for the popular compact car since the current generation surfaced in the US in June 2013. Bear in mind that North America gets a bolder, sportier face than the rest of the world (China’s Levin makes it three unique faces), something that also applies to the Camry.
The new face is a bold one, with a hint of new Prius in the mix. Pretty elaborate too, with a protruding ‘mouth’ with mesh backing and side intakes with four strakes and a vertical LED daytime running light strip.
The car above is a sporty XSE, so other variants may be a little more subtle, but this writer’s guess is that not all will prefer the new face over the outgoing car’s. New rims and a rear lamp cluster that’s now all-red are the other new elements we can spot. Inside, the dash architecture looks familiar but the elements are new, and the side AC vents are now round.
All US Corollas can be had with Toyota Safety Sense-P, which is a host of safety features including pre-collision system with pedestrian detection function, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist function and automatic high beam.
Standard features now include a reverse camera, bi-LED headlamps on L, LE and LE Eco grades, complex-LED on SE, XSE and XLE grades and a redesigned and upgraded interior, which includes audio enhancements focused on comfort and convenience. Bluetooth is standard, and Entune Audio Plus and Entune Premium Audio systems move from a 6.1-inch screen to a seven-inch one for 2017
The Corolla, one of the most iconic car nameplates ever, is 50 this year, and to mark the milestone, Toyota is wheeling out a 50th Anniversary Special Edition for USA. Based on the sporty 2017 Corolla SE, the 50th Anniversary SE will have an 8,000-unit production run.
Additional items over the SE include 17-inch machine finish alloys with dark grey inserts, seven-inch Entune Audio Plus with connected navi (Scout GPS Link App), colour 4.2-inch MID, smart key with push start, complex-LED headlamps, black mixed media seats with “Black Cherry” contrast stitching (also on steering wheel, shift boot and centre armrest) and Black Cherry accented dash and door trim. Naturally, 50th Anniversary Edition floor mats and an exterior badge are in the mix.
The limited edition is available in three exterior colors – the exclusive Black Cherry seen here, Classic Silver and Blizzard Pearl. It will be available from fall 2016 in the States.
The rest of the world (including ASEAN and Malaysia) can also look forward to a facelifted Corolla that’s coming next year, but it’s one with a less polarising new face, as showed to you yesterday.
