A pre-production test mule of the coming Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been spied in Italy. Unlike previous spy photos of the prototype, the anticipated Italian SUV is seen here for the first time in its own body, and not one borrowed from a Fiat 500.
Still heavily disguised by thick cladding, the Stelvio’s exterior silhouette can roughly be made out. For one, Alfa’s design language is noticeable all over the front end — it appears to feature the car maker’s “shield” front grille design within the front fascia, which like the Giulia, forms an integral part of the brand’s signature “Trilobo” motif. Up top, he SUV also appears to feature a sloping roof design.
Our photographers were unable to get a glimpse of the vehicle’s interior, but thanks to a cheeky teaser image from before, we’ve had a decent look at that too. As expected, the photo showed a cabin that was styled similarly to the Giulia sedan.
Under its skin, the Alfa Stelvio rides on the same platform as its sedan cousin. On top of this, hearsay suggests that several key components will be carried over from models in other brands under the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group – particularly from Jeep and Fiat SUVs.
Given the Stelvio’s ties to the Giulia it is based on, engines are also expected to be carried over from the sedan as well. Standard variants of the Stelvio will feature several tunes of the 2.2 litre diesel and 2.0 litre petrol mill, while a top-spec Quadrifoglio variant could deliver up to 510 hp thanks to the Giulia QV’s 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6.
There’s been no mention of when the Alfa Romeo Stelvio will debut, but reports suggest that sometime early 2017 is likely. The mid-size Italian SUV will rival the likes of the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5.
