It’s official – the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder is now the world’s fastest convertible. Smashing the previous record of 408 km/h set by the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, the Venom GT Spyder hit a top speed of 427.4 km/h on a test run at the Naval Air Station Lemoore in California.
“I thought that this would be a special way to celebrate 25 years of making fast cars faster,” said Hennessey’s founder, John Hennessey. “I’ve wanted to test the top speed of our Venom GT Spyder, without the roof, ever since our coupe ran 435 km/h at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in 2014. This was a great way to validate the technical excellence of our car which includes high-speed stability with an open roof.”
Brian Smith, director of the Ford Racing School was behind the wheel of the record-breaking Venom GT Spyder. The feat was verified by Racelogic, an independent speed testing firm, and was witnessed by its technical director Jim Lau and US Navy Commander Darren Fouts.
The Venom GT is powered by a 7.0 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 1,451 hp at 7,200 rpm and 1,744 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. It can perform the century sprint in under 2.4 seconds, and has been tested to hit 320 km/h in just 13 seconds. Power is sent to its rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission developed by Ricardo, with Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubbers aiding traction.
To commemorate its achievement, Hennessey says that it will produce a limited run of three World Record Edition Venom GT Spyder vehicles as a tribute also to its 25th anniversary. Each are said to cost USD$1.3 million (RM5.03 million). “We look forward to the next chapter of the Venom with the F5 as we keep making fast cars faster for the next 25 years,” Hennessey concluded.
