V1

It was a durian runtuh moment for the Road Transport Department (JPJ) after it revealed that it had collected a record RM22 million from auctioning the ‘V’ number plates, according to a report by the Malay Mail.

Deputy transport minister Datuk Aziz Kaprawi said the collection was unparalleled, as previous auctions have only raised up to RM10 million. He added that the department may consider introducing more vanity plates in the future in light of this success.

“The ministry is surprised with the public’s interest and excitement towards the introduction of new plates for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya effective last June,” he said in a report by Harian Metro. “JPJ will introduce new vehicle registration plate numbers that are more unique after this following high demand from the public,” he added.

Recently, the department released the official list of winning bids from the tender of the ‘V’ number plates. The highly coveted ‘V1’ registration number went to Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, with a bid amounting to RM989,780.
