2017 Vespa 70th Anniversary Edition – from RM18,440

In conjunction with Vespa’s 70th anniversary celebrations, Vespa Malaysia has released three commemorative models, and we had a first look at the Naza Premira showroom in Petaling Jaya. The three special edition models are the Vespa Primavera 150 at RM18,440, the Vespa GTS 150 at RM20,627 and the Vespa PX 150 at RM28,780.

All three 70th anniversary models come in the same delicate shade of electric light blue – called Azzurro 70 by Vespa – which makes these scooters look rather winsome. As part of the standard accessories package the anniversary scooters come with a rear luggage rack and Italian-made rear boot bag.

Setting the special editions apart is the dark brown saddle with beige trim, and the Vespa Settantesimo – 70th anniversary – logo stamped in the seat. Understated graphics adorn the either side of the scooters, and a special edition name shield is attached to the front cargo space.

The Primavera and GTS 150 carry the same 154.8 cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke, three-valve engine fed by EFI. Power is rated at 11.6 hp for the GTS 150, while the Primavera puts out 12.7 hp.

Meanwhile, the Vespa PX 150 uses the original 150 cc, two-stroke, air-cooled, rotary-valve single-cylinder, fed by carburettor. This throwback of an engine gives that authentic Vespa sound from the 60s, and is rated at 8.85 hp, with emissions controlled by a catalytic convertor.

A CVT gearbox drives the Primavera and GTS 150, while the PX 150 has that genuine, four-speed, twist gear selector on the left handlebar. Old-timers amongst our readers will know exactly what we are talking about.

The three limited edition models are on display at the Primera showroom, and quantities are limited, with the 70th anniversary edition only available in Azzurro 70 blue. On-the-road prices are RM18,440 for the Vespa Primavera 150, RM20,627 for the Vespa GTS 150 and RM28,780 for the two-stroke, manual gear Vespa PX 150.

Unfortunately, the Vespa PX 150 is only available with 2-stroke engine. Authentic or not, I think Vespa should have fitted a 4-stroke engine onto the PX 150 model. Obviously, 4-stroke engine will offer lower maintenance, no need to think about topping up 2-stroke oil (a big piece of mind in today’s age of motorcycling) and of course lower emission level. A large portion of Vespa (male) fans would prefer the classic lines of the PX 150 compared to the rest of the “modernized” Vespa line-up which looks rather soft/feminine. The sales of the retro-looking & Lambretta inspired Scomadi 4-stroke engined scooters are on the rise because of this..

But its stated that there is a Primavera & GTS 150 which uses a 154.8 cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke, three-valve engine fed by EFI.

Looks like the cheaper alternative Primavera/GTS fitted with a CVT gearbox are better buy. Do you agree JD ?!

    • Yeah right. Coming from someone who never road a bike. What civilised country? Civilised countries use pebbled road in city centres.
