Volvo V90 – new member of the Swedish Police fleet

The Volvo V90 has been selected as the latest member of the Swedish Police vehicle fleet, and the police force will be taking delivery of the new vehicles early next year following the V90’s achievements in the Swedish police’s driving test for its vehicles.

Testing for Swedish police cars involve five areas: braking, obstacle course driving, evasive action with and without braking and high-speed, emergency driving. The V90 managed an overall score of 9.2 out of 10, the highest ever achieved by any vehicle in the Swedish police car test, according to Volvo.

“Overall, it is difficult to find any faults at all. Chassis, steering, suspension, traction control and powertrain all show exemplary performance. Quick lane changes at high speeds feel almost deceptively easy, the car does what it is told to do and shakes off lateral forces without any protest,” the Swedish police test drivers said of the V90.

The Volvo Car Special Products department was tasked to transform the series-production V90 station wagon into a police service-ready emergency vehicle, which includes chassis strengthening, upgraded brake and suspension components, as well as the addition of the requisite police duty tools and communications equipment.

The V90’s makeover from standard unit to police car takes approximately one week at Volvo’s special manufacturing facility in Torslanda, Sweden. Volvo intends to sell the police V90 outside of Sweden – not just within Europe, but across the globe as well. Police forces that have used Volvos in the past include Norway, Italy, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and of course, Malaysia.
