Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic Sedan and Coupe launched in Malaysia – 362 hp 3.0 litre biturbo V6, RM500k-549k

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has kicked off celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of AMG with a bang – the company has launched not one, not two, but six mid-range models bearing the “43” suffix. The one you’ll likely be most interested in is this, the Mercedes-AMG C 43, which fills in the vacant space between the RM300k C 350 e plug-in hybrid and the full-fat RM700k AMG C 63 S.

Available in both sedan and coupé forms, the C 43 is priced at RM499,888 for the four-door and RM548,888 for the sleeker, slinkier two-door. Both prices are on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of a four-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

With Agility Financing, and based on a downpayment varying from 27% to 33% with a five year tenure, monthly instalments for the C 43 starts from as low as RM4,998 for the sedan and RM5,488 for the coupé. By comparison, monthly instalments for the standard Hire Purchase Classic scheme stand at RM6,576 and RM6,486 respectively.

Let’s get to the juicy bit first – under the bonnet. Power comes from Mercedes’ venerable M276 3.0 litre V6, which in this application is fitted with two turbochargers to produce 362 hp from 5,500 to 6,000 rpm and 520 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,200 rpm.

Mated to this engine is a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, which has been recalibrated to provide quicker gearshifts and throttle blipping on downshifts in Sport and Sport Plus modes. The latter also gets ignition and injection retardation to enable the transmission to shift gears even quicker, as well as providing an aggressive popping sound on upshifts.

Controlled ignition adjustments mean that Eco and Comfort modes also get faster shifts, and to save fuel, the Eco mode has a coasting function that decouples the engine off-throttle at speeds between 60 and 160 km/h. The transmission’s manual mode now sticks to the selected gear instead of shifting up, even at the redline.

Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic Coupé

Optimum traction is provided by the AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel drive system, splitting torque 31:69 front-to-rear. As such, both the sedan and the coupé are capable of blitzing the zero to 100 km/h benchmark in just 4.7 seconds before hitting an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Keeping all four wheels on the road is a revised suspension setup with special steering knuckles and load-bearing front joints, more rigid components and elastokinematics as well as increased negative camber all around. The changes are said to increase agility, lateral acceleration and traction, along with reduced body roll and more neutral handling. Speed-sensitive variable-ratio sports steering is also fitted.

All C 43 models sold in Malaysia get AMG Ride Control adaptive damping as standard, with Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus settings. These correspond to the Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual drive modes on the AMG Dynamic Select system, which also adjusts engine, transmission and steering response.

The added performance is portrayed visually via the AMG Line appearance package that adds sportier bumpers and side skirts, with the C 43 gaining additional touches to differentiate itself from the cooking C 250 and C 350 e AMG Line. These include an AMG-badged diamond grille with chrome pins, black door mirror caps, 19-inch AMG two-tone five-spoke alloy wheels, a bootlid lip spoiler and quad exhaust exits.

Also fitted on local models is the Night Package that adds a gloss black finish to the front splitter, side window trim, rear diffuser insert and tailpipe finishers. So too are the LED Intelligent Light System headlights with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and an AMG Performance exhaust system.

Inside, you’ll find a flat-bottomed steering wheel, plus sports seats upholstered in Artico faux leather and Dinamica microfibre with red stitching. A unique AMG instrument cluster with chequered-look dials is also fitted, as are Artico-wrapped dashboard and door trims, designo red seat belts and piano black and aluminium trim.

The sedan adds manual sunshades for the rear side windows and a power-retractable one for the rear windscreen, plus Thermotronic three-zone climate control. Browse full specifications and equipment on all AMG C-Class models, and get the best deals on a new car, on CarBase.my.

  • Mercedes have finally created a worthy off-spring of it’s poppa. The C43 should’ve long been an option since it was first introduced in the 1990’s (W202 C43 AMG). Glad to hear that void is finally filled.

  • Compared to this C43, I suppose road tax for GLC 43 AMG with that 3.0 Litre engine would be cheaper because it’s an SUV?

The C43 is not in the same category as the Giulia QF. The C63 is. The C43 is the lite version of the C63, so it can’t be too powerful. Having said that, both the C43 and QF sound amazing (the M3/M4 does not).
