AES cameras have captured 185,000 traffic offences since January, but only 43,312 summonses issued

Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras have captured nearly 185,000 images of errant motorists between Jan 1 and May 15, but only 43,312 summonses have been issued, the Malay Mail Online reports.

Out of the 184,791 images snapped, 160,489 were of motorists speeding up to 40 km/h above the speed limit, while 8,061 images were of those exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h. Revealing the statistics, deputy transport minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said 38,929 summonses for speeding offences had been issued so far.

Additionally, the system caught 16,241 images showing motorists running red lights, and 4,383 summonses had been issued for these offences.

Explaining the disparity in images taken to the number of summonses issued, he said fancy number plates were among the reasons that made it difficult for enforcers to locate vehicle owners. He said the issue of illegible plates will be addressed soon through a crackdown by JPJ against illegal number plates.

“The summonses are being issued in stages, but there are some cases where the number plates are not visible. This is because these fancy numbers plates do not follow specifications set by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). The images are being looked at thoroughly to avoid any disputes. That is also the reason why issuing the summonses is taking time,” he explained.

He reiterated that seven more AES cameras will be put in place this year to join the 14 cameras already in place nationwide. Among the seven new locations will be accident-prone areas in Johor and Kelantan. He added that for now, the AES will only be used to nab motorists for speeding and traffic light offences.

The system is integrated with the Kejara demerits points system under AWAS (Automated Awareness Safety System), which went online from April 1.

Is there a difference in the saman and demerit points if you speed up to 40km/h above speed limit and if you speed over 40km/h above the speed limit? Or they just separated them for statistical purpose only?

Motorcycle no. plate is so freaking small and some are well hidden within the wheel well, drivers/pedestrians right beside it still have much difficulties reading them. Do you think the authorities can identify them that easily?

U know why most people do Not pay the summons?!
1)Those who have sold their cars will NOT pay.
2)Those picture that cannot identify their face will NOT pay.
3)Have anyone been prosecuted by Not paying AES??
4)Lastly, why pay when U know they will give U Big discount later. Those who pay early paid RM 300 while its only 150 now.

well, i can use fancy plate number for speeding at any time without being able to be captured. When just caught, I will charged for that fancy number only.

I see the picture and it says speed limit is 25 KPH…is that how slow we need to drive in KL now…? I mean if cameras catching cars driving above 25 KPH then i am not surprise 180,000 vehicles got caught!….I think its not really fair for the government to lower the speed limit to 25 KPH in certain areas!

you are wrong, its not “25 above speed limit”. the limit in that road is 25, and the car was traveling at 92. 92 – 25 = 67. thus the mercedes was traveling at 67 kmph above the limit.

how AES can detect and prevent this “wrong identity” from happening?
