JPJ set to review private vehicle load limits – report

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will be instructed to review the enforcement of current load limits applied to private vehicles in order to maintain the correct passenger limit for a vehicle, according to a Bernama report.

According to deputy transport minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi, the limit on the number of passengers in private vehicles was not being enforced currently. “The time has come for the RTD (JPJ) to look at this again in order to ensure the safety of passengers,” he said.

Kaprawi’s comment was in relation to the four-vehicle crash which killed eight people in Jempoi, Negeri Sembilan yesterday. The transport ministry has also instructed the Malaysian Institute for Road Safety (MIROS) to investigate the cause of the accident, Kaprawi added.

Huh? Am I the only one who misunderstood this article. The Proton Exora vehicle which was involved in the crash in which 6 people died, is designed to transport up to 7 people safely. There are NCAP crash tests done to certify the vehicle but I’m sure it doesn’t consider being hit full-force head-on with a trailer.

because ONLY in Malaysia where its people put their kid in front of the steering wheel and don’t forget those stingy parents who don’t want to spend little for a proper child seat but willing to spend more on sport rims.

    • Even 7 series BMW also cannot tahan that kind of collision being hit full-force head-on with a trailer.

    • The problem here is not the car, but the old lorry that still being use. No point of 5 star ANCAP or what so ever if during impact with lorry, contact during impact are not in the crumple zone of the car.

  • Not only this, JPJ should look into the safety of vehicles and take action if receive complaints from the public. For example, they should investigate why so many Proton Exora got burnt down. This is not the first case that the Exora burst into flames

Agree with you, better get P2 and you’ll be safe even when a fuel tanker falls on top of it nothing will happen to you let alone burnt to death.

Still too many parents letting their babies and little kids riding in between them. Even a basic car is out of reach.

This is a step in the right direction. The limit should be the amount of seatbelts available in the car.

Often see cars cram with 5 adults and 3 children etc…. and when accident happens the children will be flung out of the vehicle..

Too many children in a family, but only can afford one Axia. Why not invent a child on lap strapbelt? Strap lap-sitting child to seat-seating occupant, while the seat-sitting occupant secured by car seatbelt. This way, one Axia can fit 5 pax + 4 children including driver in one Axia.

Or they can go through proper family planning.

    Dear Dato’ Menteri,
Have you read all the details of the accident or you just read it from whatsapp group? 8 persons perished in the accident; 2 in a myvi (in the grant by JPJ 5 seater), another 6 in a seven seater exora stated in JPJ’s grant. So where’s your logic on vehicle load limits? Math failed lorr in SPM?

Until today too many abang abang cram about 6 to 7 people in a small Proton Saga.

Every day, hundreds of cars do this. Time for JPJ to do something about this.

If you got 5 to 6 kids, you must buy Estima or Alphard.

  • Dear Datuk,

You really oughta concentrate on your local authorities first la. Educate them on the basic functions of vehicles and ensure that they go through competency tests from to time. Law enforcing positions are supposed to be a respectable career, not a career of choice when a parent try to teach their kids if they do not excel in their studies.

  • Before implementing to cars, we still see lots of commercial vehicles with overloaded cargo. Also commercial vehicles more than 20 years still can be seen frequently. Not forgetting backhoe running around and slowing down the traffic. These vehicles are more dangerous and create more deadly impact. Please take care of those first before coming to the non commercial cars.
