McLaren making EV supercar with 675LT performance

It’s not just the mass market players, such as Hyundai in an earlier news today, that are climbing on the battery-powered wagon. McLaren, the British supercar marque, is preparing a pure-electric model with the performance levels of today’s 675LT, according to Autocar.

According to the UK mag’s source, no roll-out date has been set yet, but the EV supercar is expected to sit in the brand’s top shelf Ultimate Series (that’s the P1’s realm) and will come after the P15 due later this year (said to be McLaren’s most extreme road car ever) and the three-seater BP23 that will come out next year.

While McLaren has previously told Autocar that it’s making an electric car, that was described as a test bed to assist McLaren in its quest to hybridise half of its cars by 2022. The mag’s source is now confirming that a production EV supercar is part of the plan. Also part of the plan is an initial run of five units, to be driven by selected McLaren owners as part of the development process.

The AC report says that the experience Woking gained with the P1, which is a hybrid, and its powertrain supplying role in Formula E will aid this cause.

From next year, McLaren Applied Technologies will supply a new battery that will enable Formula E race cars to complete the whole race on a single charge. That effectively doubles the current range, doing away with mid-race car swaps. Such a battery would of course be useful in an electric supercar.

But before McLaren goes full electric, there will be hybrid replacements for the Sports Series 570 and Super Series 720 at the end of their respective lifecycles, which is 2020 for the 570 and 2021 for the still-fresh 720. Buy them internal combustion engines while you can, rich mate.

Is there a ‘to’ missing at the end of the sentence?
