Mitsubishi Triton Athlete debuting at Thai Motor Expo

The Mitsubishi Triton heads into next week’s Thailand Motor Expo with a new variant, the Athlete, with updates applied inside and out. Changes seem to be largely cosmetic, with the powertrain remaining as before, revealed by leaked images on Headlight Magazine.

All variants of the Thai-market Triton Athlete Special Edition will be powered by a 2.4 litre 4N15 MIVEC diesel engine with variable geometry turbocharger and intercooler, producing 181 PS at 3,500 rpm and 430 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm. Transmission is via either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox.

On the outside, the front of the Triton Athlete gets a honeycomb grille with black stripes and the front bumper gets a black insert, as do the front fog lamp surrounds, with black and orange striping on the front bumper as well. The front wheel arches get extensions in black, along with black side mirrors.

Further along, the tray-mounted sports bar is finished in the same colour as the main vehicle exterior, and the tray itself includes a liner for the tailgate. The rear bumper follows the front in wearing black with orange accents, continuing the theme with black-and-orange decals along the lower sides of the doors and on sides of the sports bar.

The Triton Athlete’s interior follows suit, with black and orange leather upholstery for all seats. The driver gets an eight-way electrically adjustable seat, while the seats, steering wheel, shift knob, door panels and centre console storage box are trimmed with orange stitching. The air-con vents, centre console panels and steering wheel trim receive metal-look brightwork, and the floor mats are unique to the Athlete.

Equipment-wise, the Triton Athlete receives a touchscreen unit with smartphone link supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. So far that’s all the information that is available, and further details such as pricing will be revealed at the Motor Expo launch.
