Banking data leak on PSP portal fixed, says KPDNHEP

The domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry (KPDHNEP) has assured the public that the petrol subsidy programme (PSP) banking data leak has been fixed. In an official statement, the ministry said the technical issue was resolved at 1pm on Thursday (October 17), and that the PSP portal is back online with better safeguards in place.

The portal allows Malaysians to check the eligibility for the PSP, which was announced during the tabling of the Malaysian Budget 2020 on October 11. Since the portal’s reopening, the ministry has seen a high traffic flow, and advised users to be patient and to access it outside peak periods for a smoother experience. It adds users should use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for better performance when accessing the site.

The issue was first highlighted by Lowyat.net, where it conducted several tests using five different MyKad numbers and found that the complete personal bank account number came up instead of just the last four digits with the rest masked.

“The problem occurred in a short period of time and it was quickly resolved. The system was successfully protected and the data security of recipients was secured,” said domestic trade and consumer affairs minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, in a report by Bernama.

He added that more than 1.6 million hits were received in the three days since the portal was launched. “Meanwhile, the portal recorded over 218,000 eligible and updated PSP applications as at October 17. The ministry’s focus now is to ensure that no one is left out, so we urge the people to check the KPDNHEP portal and update their information,” said Saifuddin Nasution.
