New 40kW DC fast charging facility in Klang Valley – Vision Motorsports offers free use, AC charging soon

Electric vehicle owners, take note. Another DC fast charging (DCFC) facility is now available in the Klang Valley, and the good news is that there will be no cost involved for its use. Vision Motorsports, which is located in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara is offering free charging of EVs at its facility.

The unit on site is a Exicom Harmony DC wallbox charger supporting Combined Charging System (CCS) Type 1/Type 2 and CHAdeMo charging standards, and in this particular application has a 40 kW power rating. Vehicle models that will be able to utilise the fast charger at the Petaling Jaya location are battery EVs.

Locally, the list of applicable models include the BMW i3s, Nissan Leaf (both first- and second-gen, through their CHAdeMo port) and of course, Teslas. First- and second-gen Renault Zoe models won’t be able to take advantage of the DCFC, because only the third-gen version has CCS capability.

Essentially, the DC route means that the fast charger won’t be of any use to Mercedes-Benz or BMW plug-in hybrids such as the BMW X5 xDrive40e and F30 330e, which are AC-based, but owners of these will be pleased to note that the company is set to install an AC charger on the same premises very soon, ideal for top-ups – this will be a 22 kW Type 2 unit, also made by Exicom.

The new charging facility will be of particular interest to BMW i3s (via CCS) and Leaf owners or subscribers (via CHAdeMo) residing nearby the Vision Motorsports facility (location here), providing them with a quicker alternative to charging in a public area.

In the case of the Leaf, this offers them a faster means of juicing up the car than the free use of the 6.6 kW wallbox at Nissan dealerships operated by ETCM in the city. The new Leaf is capable of receiving up to 50 kW via its CHAdeMO port, which will fully charge the Leaf in about an hour.

The Vision Motorsports 40 kW DC fast charger joins a small list of DC charging stations in the country.. Other locations offering DC charging include ABB Malaysia (Subang Jaya), Nichicon (Bandar Baru Bangi) and PLUS (Ayer Keroh R&R).

DC chargers are very expensive and very rare in Malaysia… it’s a big deal. Most chargers are AC.
