Miros to present city centre speed limit reduction proposal to DBKL next month – from 50 to 30 km/h

The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) is working on a proposal to reduce the speed limit in several areas in KL city centre, from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. The proposal will be presented to DBKL next month, according to deputy federal territories minister Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias.

“Data collection and analysis will be carried out and if it is agreed then it will be implemented in September this year. The areas involved in this Miros study are areas with speed limits of 60 km/h and 40 km/h. Meanwhile roads that have been gazetted with 70 km/h and 80 km/h speed limits are not included in the study,” he told the Dewan Negara yesterday, reported by Bernama.

Jalaluddin was responding to a question from senator Datuk Mohd Hisamudin Yahaya who wanted to know the city hall’s position on Miros’ proposal to lower the speed limit in selected areas, following in the footsteps of the French capital city Paris, which gazetted such a speed limit in August 2021.

He added that DBKL was also of the view that lowering the speed limit was a good move as it would improve safety for other road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.

What do you think of this proposal? I reckon that while it may be a good idea for narrow inner city roads (made tighter by illegal street side parking), and 50 km/h does sound a bit too fast for certain areas, the mindset of certain drivers and enforcement is more important. If 30 km/h becomes official, it remains to be seen how it will be implemented and enforced – that’s the more important thing.

    30kmh?

Did someone ikut overseas but forget to change from MPH to KMH?

Does not matter really, at peak times my average speed in KL is 13km/h only. I can cycle 2x faster.

Bigger question is, how to enforce? Rempit and grab riders included? They can’t even enforce red light runners. Isn’t that where the biggest contributor of accidents come from?

Enforce? Motorbikes breaking traffic rules daily also cannot enforce. No smoking zones at mamak shops and food courts also no longer enforced. Cakap sajalah pandai..

Is this the best that MIROS can do? M’sia spends hundreds of thousands on the salaries of MIROS highly qualified staff and this is all they can produce?

There is a dual lane road offramp in JB, beside the MBJB clock tower, with a 30kph speed limit.

Tried to do 30kph, and it is very scary being honked by large trucks going 80-100kph.

30kph is basically slower than some bicycles.

  • Better for MIROS to ask DBKL repaired all potholes and uneven road first.

Hmm this does make those low speed electric scooter safer. I used to think: what? 44kmh maximum speed, how is that possible in malaysia? I guess its a good thing now.

Enforce the existing laws first laaaa….why want to waste money, pay people to form jawatankuasa and steering committee, give some crony a contract to change all the speed signs/redo road markings…comes with more revenue for the government and improves driving behaviour. But no….have to do it the most costly way possible and still doesn’t fix the problem of driver attitude

20 km/h la wei, 30 km/h still fast. You try yourself, running across the road while a car is driven at 30 km/h, see the car can come to a stand stop or can minimize the impact of hitting you. At least at 20 km/h the impact is not so bad.

I’m referring to shoplot area where there are lot of cars park/finding a place to park and people are walking including the kids, and some kids are running around in between the cars. It should be 20 km/h top.
