Big lorries banned from entering KL during peak hours

The Federal Territories Ministry via DBKL has banned big lorries from entering the KL city centre during peak hours with immediate effect. The ban on heavy vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes is a short-term measure, decided by a special committee looking into solutions to ease traffic congestion in the capital city.

Deputy minister Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias said that any heavy vehicle found entering the capital at peak hours will be subject to action under Section 79 of The Road Transport Act 1987 by the police and the JPJ. Peak hours have been defined as 6.30 am to 9.30 am in the morning, and 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm in the evening.

“Those who violate this ban will be subject to mandatory compounds and we will take a tough stance by not considering any appeals they might submit,” he said after chairing the first meeting of the special committee yesterday, reported by Bernama.

Besides the ban on heavy vehicles, the committee has medium-term plans to stop curb side parking during peak hours and the phasing out public parking spots at major roads in stages. “We also are banning traders from conducting business on pavements during peak hours and will phase out trading spots in stages on pavements of major roads,” the deputy minister added.

The committee says that the congestion is due to a 45% increase in the number of vehicles on the roads after the easing of the movement control order in August last year, with 46.76 million recorded in December 2021 compared to 26.51 million in December 2019.

it’s not just the big lorries, it’s the parents sending the kids to school as well.
Why no jam during school holidays?

    Right move,
    1. ban all the slow heavy vehicles @ peak hours.
    2. ban all the road hogging side parking.
    3. phase out trading spots in stages on pavements of major roads.

Traffic Jam, usually peak hours, caused by road hogging:

    1. @ residential/school zone- Parents hogging @ schools, tuition centers, etc
@ Peak hours lagi tu! KL example – Jalan Hang Jebat Schools. maybe can consider 1 way/2way route strategically.
    2. @ retail/ office zone- Driver, Grab drivers hogging/temporary parking @ the side lane.
Especially Pavillion, Mid Valley, Petaling Street, etc.
    3. @ food zone – Pasar malam, Bazaar, drive thru warung road side, clashing with peak hours.
    4. Excessive traffic light/junction.
PJ, USJ1, Kesas re-routing proven the reduced junction and traffic light benefits for traffic jam improvement. 1 way traffic/reduced junction/dedicated U turn lane helped.
    5. Additional temporary police block –
E.g near Wisma Wah Chan/Ford Showroom Federal Highway
Police road block not consistently reflected to Waze to help drivers.
    6. Heavy logistic, crawling speed hogging lorry and trucks.
    7. Car accidents.

Hope this KL pioneer observation and solution can be spread and introduced to Klang Valley, and other states.

    Peak Hours
to reinstate all lanes to be functionable,

    1. not hogged – no side parking, waiting, no loading/unloading, but pickup customer is ok,

    2. not clogged – a 2 lanes still remain 2 lanes road.

    3. not bottleneck – a heavy 2 lanes traffic should not meet 1 lane bottleneck T junction, without barrier guidance, etc.

I do observe some allocated Police try to aid the guidance path during peak hours. Maybe more can be done.

in fact, alot jam not middle of KL,
but trying to get out from KL.
when it rains, no policeman helping – susah…

Why always penalised BIG LORRIES and not motorist ? Are big lorries really the main caused?

The government should look into the matter properly. The government should veto the KLSE laws requiring those listed companies compulsory to set up their headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. Those listed companies must be free to set up their HQ set up in their own home ground instead of KL and PJ. ( try to move the staff working environment back to their original home grounds away from KL) .

In this way ,less employees or staff will need to travel, work and live in Kuala Lumpur hence less vehicles be on KL and PJ roads.

Then traffic congestion can be eased since our Public transport system lacks CONNECTIVITY and always on MISS schedule. This also couple with facts of government lack of competent officers proper planning for land use transportation system from initial stage. No point keep building more highways with TOLLS leading to and away from KL as new car numbers keep multiplying everyday. No point providing approvals to keep on constructing tall buildings when are not suppose to even in areas not allow to do so especially refusal to gazette city land areas ( STOP insane high density plot ratio approvals) not meant for tall buildings OR Condominiums.

This better than having terrible UKM ideas of scrapping ten year old good cars with existing owners buying new cars once again to add on to the congestion of Kuala lumpur and Petaling Jaya roads with never ending traffic jam.
