Proton S70 – new Perdana based on Geely Preface?

Proton S70 – new Perdana based on Geely Preface?

Proton is set to introduce its new sedan, which is expected to be called the S50, in the near future. The upcoming car, based on the Geely Emgrand, will sit at the top of the automaker’s sedan range when it eventually arrives, filling in the slot vacated by the discontinued Preve.

Should the automaker look at expanding its sedan portfolio further, the obvious shoes to fill would be that of the Perdana’s. Back in 2019, before the world changed the following year, the brand had outlined its future product plans, stating that the first new sedan (which we now know is the S50) would arrive in 2021, followed by another sedan in 2022.

At that point, a Perdana (or Persona) replacement model was ventured as possible candidates. Although nothing further along those lines has come about since then, rendering wizard Theophilus Chin brings up the possibility of a new Perdana via a series of digital renditions.

Proton S70 – new Perdana based on Geely Preface?

In these, he comes up with a flagship Proton sedan based on the Geely Preface. The Preface, which was unveiled in 2020, is a 4.78 metre-long sedan underpinned by the Chinese automaker’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform.

In its domestic market, the car is powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine, and this is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox used throughout the Geely range.

The renders by Theo offer a classy-looking offering, but given that the market for mid-level D-segment executive sedans continues to contract in the face of the SUV onslaught, do you think something scoped along Perdana lines would work for the national automaker in this day and age? Geely Preface is 4.8m in length, 1.9m wide, surprisingly more spacious than latest Toyota Camry D-segment RM200k and bigger than Volvo S60 D-Segment RM296k…
How can this be a Preve replacement??? Original Preve was 4.5m in length and 1.7m wide, that’s about the size of the latest Vios AC100… Emgrand 4.6m long 1.8m wide is the correct and competent replacement for Preve.
Preface will be priced around RM130-150k, slightly above Proton X90, that’s not a Preve price range.

Cars getting bigger. Traditional measurements just not relevant anymore. Civic is now sized the same as old accord.

Just so u know, the emegrand is sold worldwide as city/vios direct competitor. Not civic.

That’s not surprising, given that sales in the particular segment has been on the decline for a good while now, with consumers looking at SUVs and segment-down alternatives instead.

Should it come? Proton had the foresight and made the right decision not to make a new Perdana from scratch, instead they went for a reworked 8th gen Accord, in view the start of diminishing D segment sedan market that time.

Speaking about Accord, even Honda decided not to bring in the new model anymore

      • Agreed, and remove those damned protections given to P1 (and P2). Special treatment and incentives were given for R&D in the past. Now the people are made to suffer because even after close to 40 years in the business, P1 needs crutches from the government.

        • do u think any parties holding the government will abolish their easy tax income? now it’s not about protection for proton. it’s about national revenue.

  • New Perdana? The heads in gov in gov dept and politicians must be anxious hearing this. Have to formulate new excuses on why they should get other cars, just like how they trash Perdana for Merc / Camry the last time.

It can surely fly, if sold at Proton X90 prices.

That looks sporty enough + conti enough to get people out from their Camry, A3 sedan etc.

There will also be less competition due to no more Honda Accord in the near future.

IMO, proton just get that Geely Preface/S70 out in the market!

The big sedan segment is really shrinking year on year so marketing wise its not feasible to invest into the conversion to RHD just for the few hundreds sold a month. Look at the S90, how is the sale volume?

Much better would be bring in Jiaji L (facelift) as Exora replacement. There is a vacuum for mpv priced at 70k-150k, market it as a step up from Alza say at 80k-100k and it should sell well.

Rebadge car marketing starts, what’s the point to have this co if its taking other co product and use its logo and make pple fool to mention soft suspension used for Malaysia roads by poton engineers, so question is poton engineer only appoint for soft touch n go only (remove principal co logo and play with small issues to make customers fool)
After sales is another nitemare which would never be improve

The D-Sedan market in Malaysia is shrinking. Don’t think the Perdana will be replaced. It wouldn’t be a wise decision to do so given the segment’s very small volume. Amortisation of RHD development will be a blocking point, much less making a decent profit from it. Honda will not renew the Accord in Malaysia as well. The executive market will be served by D-SUVs, and 7-seater versions of the same will be the alternative for large family who don’t want a full-size MPV – the Proton X90 is in a good position to capitalise this.

  • Seriously I’m waiting this 2.0T ICE engine to come if not then Geely Tugella -> X80 to old replace my D-segment sedan.
Perhaps not BEV as its still not convenient for long haul with long charging time and expensive charges with DC charging cost.

Can’t wait for Proton to launch the S70 honestly. I am a big fan of the Preface and love driving sedans especially for longer travels on the road.
