Honda Civic, Civic Type R and CR-V recalled in Malaysia over steering issue – 36,000 units affected

Honda Malaysia has announced a recall for approximately 36,000 units of the Civic, Civic Type R and CR-V over an issue related to the steering on these cars. The models involved include the 11th-gen Civic (2022-2024 model year), Civic Type R FL5 (2023-2024 model year) and sixth-gen CR-V (2024 model year).

The issue involves the EPS gearbox, where the worm wheel may swell and reduce grease film thickness, causing abnormal steering noise or a sticky steering. The company said the recall will update the electric power steering (EPS) gearbox to solve the issue.

The company apologises for the inconvenience caused to affected customers, and reassured owners that other current production and selling models are not affected by this recall. The company said it will bear the cost of inspection, repair or replacement of the affected parts in this activity. It added that the replacement stock will be available in stages starting from December 2024.

The company added that all affected customers will be informed via notification letters, which will include details of the product update. Honda Malaysia has urged all customers involved in this update to contact any Honda authorised dealer to make an appointment upon receiving the notification, to have their vehicles inspected and/or repaired if required.

It said vehicle owners can obtain information or check their vehicle status by calling Honda Malaysia’s toll-free number at 1-800-88-2020 or by logging on to productrecall.honda.com.my or contacting any Honda authorised dealer.

The Malaysian recall follows on a recall notice the automaker made last month for two million vehicles and SUVs in North America over a similar issue involving the steering.

I have an Accord few years back….oh my ..the gear box kaput at 120,000km…then the damn engine keeps leaking engine oil off an on,the steering rack..u can buy original or OEM,it cant last even 12 months, then one fine day the ball joint gave way…until I said enough is enough.
Compared to my Camry, which needs very little big item repairs.
Honda will give you nightmare dreams…not sweet dreams.Nice to drive, pretty to look at,but bad memories.

  • It’s commendable that they’ve acknowledged this issue. However, what’s concerning is their apparent distinction between those who will receive a replacement and those who will only undergo an inspection. Considering that the part has already been proven to be defective, why not replace it for everyone? This situation poses a significant risk and could lead to further complications.
