Express bus drivers found dropping passengers in unauthorised areas will be fined on the spot, says JPJ

Express bus drivers caught dropping passengers in unauthorised areas will be issued a traffic summons on the spot, says the Kedah road transport department (JPJ). According to state JPJ director Stien Van Lutam, the department detected two such violations since the two-week long Hari Raya Aidilfitri special operation to check on express buses began on March 24.

In the first case, undercover officers caught a 29-year-old driver of an express bus travelling from Ipoh to Sungai Petani dropping off passengers in a restricted area outside the designated terminal. The second instance involved another driver, aged 27, committing the same offence on a route from Alor Setar to Kelantan. He was also caught overtaking on a double line, as Bernama reports.

“We issued summonses because they persist in breaking the rules. This isn’t just about violating regulations. It puts passengers at risk and contributes to accidents and traffic congestion when buses stop outside terminals,” he said.

Van Lutam said the department would continue to monitor buses during the 14-day operation, which ends on April 8. Enforcement officers will also focus on nabbing motorists who commit any of the nine major traffic offences, which includes speeding, running red lights, overtaking on double lines, driving in the emergency lane and using mobile phones while driving.

The state JPJ has deployed 271 personnel for the operation, part of the 2,500 JPJ officers that will be working nationwide throughout the operation period. In a week-long nationwide pre-Hari Raya operation exercise carried out from March 16 to 23, the JPJ inspected more than 500 express buses and issued 11 of these with non-roadworthy notices, prohibiting them from being in use during the festive period.
