Jan 2026 Malaysian vehicle sales down by 29% – MAA

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has released vehicle sales data for the month of January 2026, which saw a total of 64,298 units being delivered to customers. This latest figure is 29% lower when compared to the 90,716 units recorded in December 2025.

According to the association, the reduced sales volume in January 2026 is mainly the result of advance purchasing in December 2025, which saw the highest single-month tally in history (the previous record was 81,735 units in December 2024). This isn’t a new phenomenon, as the same thing happened when comparing January to December sales figures going back a couple of years.

On a year-to-year (YoY) basis, the January 2026 tally is a whopping 27% higher compared to January 2025 (50,449 units), with the increase attributed to the spillover effect from new model launches that took place towards the end of 2025.

For the month of February 2026, the association is expecting sales to remain subdued due to the shorter working month (17 days) brought on by the Chinese New Year holidays.

On the production site of things, last month saw a total of 60,866 vehicles being produced, which is 6% more compared to the 57,450 units recorded in January 2025.

Dont blame Dec 2025 year end push and Feb shorter working month, for slower car sales.
The real truth is ,rakyat is getting extremely ‘cautious’now.
The Ringgit is strengthening. But why are imported items like food and medicine keep increasing?
The costs of private healthcare n insurance have skyrocketed.
    Many are downsizing.
Folks ,gone r the days where spending has no tomorrow.Only the foolish, and those who over rely on ” perlindungan” will keep expanding their debt portfolio.

One of the significant reason for booming numbers of vehicles on the road is because of the JPJ rule to relocate ‘the hodoh’ plate into another vehicle (mostly motorbike) when owner intends to replace it with an interesting plate.

Should have allow the ‘hodoh’ registration number flooting in the system waiting for any interested party instead.

that makes no sense because the owner can only drive one vehcile at a time, his other vehicles will remain Off the road .

So smart yet so stupid… Understand the issue first then comment… If I owned 5 vehicles how do u know only one OTR at a time? My wives, my sons, my daughters, my brothers, my sisters, my parents cannot drive my vehicles at the same time? Is it too hard to understand?

then you are moving the goalpost by talking about two literally unrelated topics. you have five adult drivers in your family and each needs to use their own invidiual car, so whats the problem and how is it related to relocating number plate to a motorbike?

I’ve talked with one of the JPJ top brass. He says JPJ is aware of the issue and undergoing process to change it. Just wait and we’ll see who is dumber here. BTW if u are motorcycle dealer then everbody know that u are just thinking money only. That’s why u are buta kayu.

Seems like the headline could be more encouraging and optimistic considering Jan sales 2026 is 27% higher than 2025.
Matter of how the writer wants to frame it .
    Why not bring some cheer?
