FIRST LOOK: 2023 Audi Q8 e-tron EV – 410 km range, RM369k, BMW iX rival an ‘absolute bargain’ in Malaysia

The 2023 Audi Q8 e-tron is now in Malaysia and it’s an absolute bargain of an EV in Malaysia, according to Hafriz Shah. That’s pretty surprising – especially coming from Audi – but with a sticker price from RM369,000 to RM379,000, this big electric SUV undercuts the popular BMW iX, which in its lowest form, is over RM400k now.

There’s more. The Q8 e-tron is even cheaper than a Mercedes-Benz EQC, which is from a lower size segment. And here’s the clincher – believe it or not, this car is even cheaper to buy here than in the UK! For some context, the petrol-powered Audi Q8 in the same showroom is over 2.5x more expensive at nearly RM900k. Yup, that’s what taxes and duties can do to CBU imports, so it’s not always the local distributor’s fault.

This big electric SUV started life as the e-tron, Audi’s first series production EV, back in 2018, and it wasn’t until late 2022 that it gained the Q8 badge in an update. The four rings makes a couple of EVs now, and with more to come, the renaming is logical.

Anyway, the Q8 e-tron advanced 50 quattro is powered by a pair of electric motors that serve up a total of 340 PS (250 kW) in boost mode as well as 664 Nm of torque. The two-stage ratio planetary gearbox with a single gear channels drive to all four wheels, and 0-100 km/h is done in six seconds flat. Top speed is 200 km/h.

The motors are juiced by a lithium-ion battery with a gross energy capacity of 95 kWh (89 kWh usable). The published range is 410 km and claimed energy consumption is 24.0 kWh per 100 km combined. An on-board 11 kW AC charger is included.

Audi Malaysia will also be bringing in the Q8 e-tron S line 55, which will add on sportier looks typical of S line variants, as well as a bigger 114 kWh battery that boosts claimed range to 481 km. By the way, Audi Malaysia’s EV range claims are a fair bit lower than the official WLTP figures of 491 km for the 50 and 582 km for the 55. Strange, but better than overpromising we guess.

In this walk-around video, Hafriz will also talk about the differences between this base advanced 50 and the S line 55, which will be priced around RM460k. Malaysian customers will also be able to choose Sportback versions of the 50 and 55, which come with a sloping roofline for that ‘SUV coupe’ look. The Sportback premium will be from RM5k to RM10k, which is small change for those shopping at this level.

The Q8 e-tron is a large SUV, measuring 4,915 mm long and 1,937 mm wide, with a 2,928 mm wheelbase. Boot volume is 569 litres. The BMW iX is just 38 mm longer and 30 mm wider, and has a 72 mm longer wheelbase. By the way, the iX that we get, the xDrive 40, has 322 hp, 630 Nm, a 0-100 km/h time of 6.1 seconds and 425 km range. Again, in the same ballpark.

This grey Q8 e-tron wears 20-inch Graphite Gray five-arm dynamic style alloys and rides on adaptive air suspension, which the iX doesn’t get. Other exterior kit include LED main headlights, LED rear combination lamps, high-beam assist and a high-gloss styling pack. Inside, the Q8 e-tron is furnished in “mono.pur 550” combination leather, a leatherette-covered dash top, gloss black buttons with haptic feedback and aluminium look trim.

On the tech front, there’s Audi virtual cockpit plus, Audi connect Navigation & Infotainment, Audi smartphone interface, Audi phone box light and MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch response. The Q8 e-tron’s dashboard has three screens and a more traditional layout versus the long co-joined screen format employed by BMW (and almost every Chinese brand these days). It’s more busy-looking here for sure – which style do you like?

Comfort features include electric front seats with four-way lumbar (memory for driver), four-zone climate control and a powered tailgate. Safety wise, it’s as you’d expect. Eight airbags; Audi pre sense front and rear; adaptive cruise control with speed limiter, efficiency assist, swerve assist and turn assist; lane departure warning and front/rear cross traffic assist are all included.

This amount of car, for RM369,000 to RM379,000 – what do you think? Value aside, the Q8 e-tron looks more like a conventional SUV compared to the wild iX, which is quite a sales success here despite its looks being panned by car enthusiasts. Perhaps high end EV customers like to stand out. Which big electric SUV do you prefer? Watch the video and let us know.

2023 Audi Q8 e-tron EV makes first debut in SEA – launching in Malaysia in June; RM369k-RM476k est

The new Audi Q8 e-tron has made its first debut in Southeast Asia at the House of Progress showcase, which will take place at the ArtScience Museum from March 31 to April 16 this year. The all-electric SUV was revealed globally last November and is currently open for booking in Malaysia.

As a brief recap, the Q8 e-tron will be available in advanced 50 and S line 55 guises, with both all-wheel drive quattro powertrains also offered for the Sportback version of the SUV. In total, there are four options, with pricing estimated to be between RM369,000 and RM476,000.

The car seen here is officially called the Q8 advanced e-tron 50 quattro, which features a lithium-ion battery with a gross energy capacity of 95 kWh (89 kwh usable). This is good for a range of 410 km according to PHS Automotive Malaysia (PHSAM), the Audi importer and distributor in Malaysia.

The battery powers a pair of electric motors that serve up a total system output of 340 PS (335 hp or 250 kW) in boost mode as well as 664 Nm of torque. These figures enable a top speed of 200 km/h, with the first 100 km/h arriving in six seconds when accelerating from a standstill.

In terms of equipment, this Q8 e-tron comes equipped with adaptive air suspension, ambient lighting package plus, MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch response, virtual cockpit plus, a wireless charger, four-zone climate control, parking aid plus with a 360-degree camera, Audi pre sense front and rear, lane change assistant, rear cross traffic alert and adaptive cruise control.

Options fitted here include the black styling package with black roof rails, matte brushed aluminium decorative inserts, sports seats with Valcona leather upholstery and 22-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels in a five-spoke design with a titanium grey finish. We were told by PHSAM that this specification will be close to what we’ll get when the Q8 e-tron is launched, although finalised details weren’t provided.

On that mention, during a brief Q&A session with PHSAM’s managing directors Erik Winter and Kurt Leitner, it was revealed that the Q8 e-tron will make its Malaysian launch debut sometime in June this year.

While not displayed at the showcase in Singapore, the Q8 e-tron for Malaysia will also be available as the S line 55, which offers 481 km of range thanks to a larger battery with 114 kWh of gross energy capacity (106 kWh usable).

The all-wheel drive setup is also more powerful as it provides 408 PS, but peak torque is maintained at 664 Nm. The Sportback version of the Q8 e-tron features a coupe-like roofline for a more dynamic look and will also be available in the two trim levels mentioned. The higher-spec option naturally gets more kit, as we detailed in our earlier report.

The Q8 e-tron will compete against the BMW iX when it goes on sale here, with the latter retailing for between RM385,430 and RM528,430 (RM403,800 to RM546,800 when the extended warranty and service package is included). The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV also joins this crowd, although the model hasn’t been launched here yet. Given the projected prices, will you pick the Q8 e-tron over the iX?

  • Audi Q8 e-tron, Q8 Sportback e-tron EVs open for booking in Malaysia – four variants, RM369k-RM476k

Audi Q8 e-tron, Q8 Sportback e-tron EVs open for booking in Malaysia – four variants, RM369k-RM476k

The Audi Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron are now open for booking in Malaysia, after the opening of registrations of interest last month for the German manufacturer’s range of fully electric vehicles in the country. The announcement of these electric SUVs has been joined by the Malaysian preview of the e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT.

The order books have now opened for the Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron in Malaysia, and prices are estimated to be from RM369,000 to RM476,000. The Q8 is the renamed Audi e-tron, which was the carmaker’s first series production battery-electric vehicle that first made its global debut in 2018.

Early details from Audi importer and distributor in Malaysia, PHS Automotive Malaysia (PHSAM) reveal that the Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron will be specified with up to 114 kWh in battery capacity (106 kWh usable). Back in January, a total of four Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron variants were listed in the ROI online form.

Pricing and specifications of the 2023 Audi Q8 e-tron range. Click to enlarge

The Q8 e-tron range starts with the Q8 e-tron advanced 50 that gets a 95 kWh battery (89 kWh usable) for a maximum range of 410 km according to PHSAM, and key equipment for this variant includes auxiliary air-conditioning, Audi pre sense front and rear, adaptive cruise control, and the Audi phone box light.

All variants are all-wheel-drive, and as such, all get dual-motor powertrains beginning with the e-tron advanced 50 that makes 340 PS and 664 Nm in boost mode.

Next is the Q8 Sportback e-tron, also in advanced 50 trim – and thus expected to be specified with the same battery as the Q8 e-tron advanced 50 – which brings matrix LED headlamps, the black styling package, red-painted brake calipers, sports adaptive air suspension and sports seats.

Joining the advanced 50 duo are the higher specification variants, the e-tron 55 variants for both regular and Sportback bodystyles in S line trim.

Here, the Q8 e-tron S line 55 gets the larger 114 kWh battery (106 kWh usable) for a maximum range of 481 km according to PHSAM, feeding a more potent dual-motor powertrain that outputs 408 PS and the same 664 Nm of torque. This gets the upgraded 22 kW onboard AC charger that will charge the 106 kWh battery in four hours 45 minutes (standard 11 kW AC charging does the job in nine hours 15 minutes).

In terms of global specifications, the 50 variant of the Q8 e-tron supports DC charging at up to 150 kW, while the 55 variant supports 170 kW DC charging; the latter will yield a 10-80% state of charge in 31 minutes to gain 420 km of range.

On the outside, the exterior of this S line 55 variant is set apart by its digital matrix LED headlamps and virtual exterior mirrors (cameras). Inside, the Q8 e-tron S line 55 is outfitted with a panoramic glass sunroof, head-up display, a Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, as well as power-latching doors, among others.

Capping the Q8 e-tron range thus far is the Q8 Sportback e-tron S line 55, which adds the sports seats plus specification, the black styling package, red-painted brake calipers and sports adaptive air suspension.

In addition to the coming roll-out of fully electric models, PHSAM is also developing a range of aftersales and warranty programmes specific to this range of fully electric Audis for improved customer loyalty. More details will be forthcoming as these models get officially launched in the near future.

  • 2023 Audi Q8 e-tron – renamed SUV gets up to 600 km EV range, 503 PS, 973 Nm; standard, Sportback bodies

2023 Audi Q8 e-tron – renamed SUV gets up to 600 km EV range, 503 PS, 973 Nm; standard, Sportback bodies

The Audi e-tron is the brand’s first series production electric vehicle that made its debut back in September 2018. Since then, the German carmaker has released several other EVs that are part of the ‘e-tron’ series, including the e-tron GT and Q4 e-tron. To make sure people don’t get confused where the large SUV sits in the line-up, the original e-tron has now been renamed the Q8 e-tron as part of its latest update.

“By calling this model the Q8, Audi is making a clear statement that the Audi Q8 e-tron is the top model among its electric SUVs and crossovers,” the carmaker said in its official release. When the Q8 e-tron goes on sale from February next year – order taking starts this November – it will be available in regular and Sportback body styles.

There’s also no less than three quattro all-wheel drive electric drivetrains and two battery sizes to choose from. Audi says the asynchronous motor concept on the rear axle has been modified to have 14 coils generating the electromagnetic field instead of 12 previously to create the same amount of torque, or produce more with the same amount of energy as the older design.

Kicking things off is the Q8 50 e-tron quattro, which offers as much as 340 PS (335 hp or 250 kW) in boost mode and 664 Nm of torque. The two electric motors – one for each axle – draw power from a reworked lithium-ion battery with a higher usable energy capacity of 89 kWh (95 kWh gross) – previously 64.7 kWh (71 kWh gross). This is good for a range of up to 491 km (standard body) or 505 km (Sportback) following the WLTP, which is over 100 km more than before.

Sitting above the base option is the Q8 55 e-tron that gets a more substantial battery with 106 kWh (114 kWh gross) – previously 86.5 kWh usable (95 kWh gross) – along with electric motors that output 408 PS (402 hp or 300 kW) in boost mode and 664 Nm. The increased battery capacity provides up to 582 km (standard body) and 600 km (Sportback) of range. Both the Q8 50 and Q8 55 share the same limited top speed of 210 km/h.

For even more power, there’s the SQ8 e-tron – renamed from the e-tron S – which gains a third electric motor for a total system output of 503 PS (496 hp or 370 kW) and 973 Nm in boost mode. The range-topper gets the larger battery, but its range is only up to 494 km (standard body) and 513 km (Sportback), although the top speed gets a bump to 210 km/h.

In terms of charging, all Q8 e-tron variants support AC charging at up to 11 kW (nine hours and 15 minutes) or 22 kW (four hours and 45 minutes), the latter being an optional upgrade. There’s also DC fast charging, which is at 150 kW for the Q8 50 e-tron, and 170 kW for the Q8 55 e-tron and SQ8 e-tron – the higher input gets the battery from a 10-80% state of charge in about 31 minutes for 420 km of range.

One reason for the increased range with the update is the improved aerodynamics, with the drag coefficient for the Sportback down from 0.26 to 0.24, and 0.28 to 0.27 for the standard body. Changes to enable these improvements include wheel spoilers mounted on the underbody help divert airflow around the wheels, including on the rear for the SQ8 e-tron.

The grille also gets a self-sealing system in addition to the electric shutters that automatically close the radiator to further optimise airflow. On that mention, the grille has been restyled to visually link it to recent e-tron models and comes with a new version of the brand’s four-ringed logo that is illuminated by an overhead light bar. The rest of the car remains largely the same, although there’s laser etching on the B-pillars.

Inside, you’ll find very subtle changes like increased use of recycled materials. As before, there’s no shortage of displays, with a 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit and a 10.1-inch MMI touch response infotainment system sitting above an 8.6-inch secondary touchscreen that replaces all conventional switches and knobs.

Other features include standard air suspension that allows the ride height to be adjusted by 76 mm. There’s also revised tuning for the air springs and an updated steering ratio, the latter providing quicker response. Digital matrix LED headlamps are also available as an option, now improved with enhanced traffic information, the lane light with a direction indicator and the orientation light on country roads.
