If a regular old 2024 Ford Mustang just isn’t enough for you, you can take it up a notch by getting one of these Ford Mustang Dark Horse models.

The Mustang Dark Horse is available exclusively with the 5.0 litre V8 Coyote engine and adds on more power, improved aero, tyres, steering to create a more performance-focused Mustang.

The Coyote 5.0 litre V8 engine is enhanced with conrods from the 760 horsepower Shelby GT500 Mustang. It won’t get 760 horsepower as it remains normally aspirated (the Shelby is supercharged), but it is projected to output 500 horses, which is higher than the regular Mustang V8.

The standard transmission will be a six-speed TREMEC manual, but differentiated from a regular manual Mustang with the addition of a transmission oil cooler. You can also have the Mustang Dark Horse with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Chassis tuning includes larger rear sway bars, heavy-duty front shocks, and a Ford Performance-designed strut tower brace and K-brace. The Dark Horse also gets upgraded 19-inch Brembo six-pot front brakes with 13.9-inch rotors.

Exterior differentiation from a normal Mustang include darkened headlamps, a unique front bumper, a fixed rear wing, rear diffuser, and darkened exhaust tips. Dark Horse badging is placed on the fender, truck an door sils. The pony logo is also given the dark anodized treatment.

There’s also an exterior paint exclusive to the Dark Horse – the Blue Embed metallic paint you see in these photos.

There will be two variants of the Mustang Dark Horse which won’t be street legal. A less hardcore version called the Mustang Dark Horse S designed for the weekend track day enthusiast, and a full racing Mustang Dark Horse R.

The Mustang Dark Horse S is stripped of all non-essential parts and trim pieces, and is equipped with a full FIA-certified safety cage, safety nets, race seat with safety belts and a race steering wheel with quick disconnect. It also gets electrical disconnects and a fire suppression system.

Driver seat is standard, rear passenger seat is optional. No rear passengers. Suspension is upgraded to Multimatic DSSV dampers with adjustable height and camber.

Driver controls are contained within a central panel, which houses switches and knobs for the headlamps, side indicators, windshield wipers, mirror adjusters and rain light. Also included for Dark Horse S is a pit speed limiter and a data and acquisition display system.

The Dark Horse R upgrades on the Dark Horse S with strategic seam welding, a fuel cell for increased range, and Ford Performance Parts wheels.

2024 Ford Mustang S650 – rev engine using the key, electronic drift handbrake, UI using 3D Unreal Engine!

Ford has launched the all-new seventh-generation Mustang (codenamed S650) to replace the previous-generation S550 model, which made its debut almost 10 years ago in 2013.

The 2024 Ford Mustang is available with two updated engine options, a 5.0 litre naturally-aspirated Coyote V8 engine for the GT variant and an all-new 2.3 litre turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine. Transmission options for the car a six-speed manual with rev-matching and a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Six driving modes are available, including Normal, Sport, Slippery, Drag, Track and a customisable setting with up to six individual profiles.

The V8 engine features a dual air intake box and dual throttle body design to minimise induction loss with higher air flow. For the first time, the Mustang allows its owners to rev the engine remotely using the key fob without even getting into the car, via a Remote Rev feature.

An optional Performance Pack adds a front tower brace, an active exhaust system, Recaro seats, Torsen limited-slip differential, Delphi MagneRide active suspension, wider rear wheels and tyres along with larger Brembo rotors (390 mm front and 355 mm rear). The Performance Pack also offers a segment-first Performance Electronic Parking Brake to replace the mechanical handbrake when initiating drifts.

The GT Performance Pack adds brake ducts for improved cooling and a standard auxiliary engine oil cooler. For a touch more agility and driving engagement, the Mustang now features quicker steering ratios with more connection between the steering wheel and tyres.

Up front, signature Mustang cues have been retained such as the tri-bar LED headlamp design, although the graphics are now more prominently featured across the light fixture. The new Mustang also sports a new, larger front grille influenced by the original 1960s design.

The GT variant of the Mustang differentiates itself from EcoBoost variants with large grille openings for better airflow towards the engine, along with hood vents and a front splitter. It may not be obvious, but the Mustang’s roofline has also been redesigned for easier entry and exit of the vehicle, especially with a helmet on.

At the rear are shorter overhangs and wide rear haunches to emphasise the athleticism of the muscle (sorry, pony) car. The new Mustang’s signature tri-bar tail lamps come with a slightly arched appearance and a redesigned diffuser for better aerodynamics. Animated welcome lighting greets occupants as they approach the vehicle.

As for the convertible, the fully-lined and insulated fabric roof can be opened through a one-touch operation using a single-handle centre latch, and is tucked into a trunk big enough to accommodate two golf bags. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 20 inches, with 11 exterior colour options including new colours such as Vapor Blue and Yellow Splash. Brake calipers can be finished in either black, red or Grabber blue.

Aside from the optional Performance Pack, a Mustang Design Series package offers further factory customisations. The Bronze Design Series Appearance Package sees Sinister Bronze details and alloy wheels added to the Mustang.

Climbing onboard the fighter jet-inspired interior, occupants are greeted by two 12.4-inch curved screens powered by the same Unreal Engine 3D software used in video games to offer different customised displays and animated designs.

When customising the drive modes, the Mustang’s current setup is displayed in real-time renderings and in true video game fashion, the settings can be adjusted by swiping the graphic to rotate the car. For a less cluttered display, there’s even a ‘calm screen’ option with minimal details.

The Mustang’s new copper appearance on the digital instrument cluster takes after the fully electric Mustang Mach-E, and can be optionally configured to flow seamlessly into the 13.2-inch SYNC 4 infotainment display tucked behind a single piece glass. Physical buttons for the radio and climate control have been removed and integrated into the digital display as a result from input gained from traditional Mustang drivers, Gen-Z and millennials.

As standard, the Mustang comes with fabric seats with optional suede inserts and black seat belts, while the Premium models are distinguished by accent stitching on the door trims and dashboard. The EcoBoost models feature Ford’s ‘ActiveX’ synthetic leather upholstery, while the GT variants get leather seats. Full leather steering, upholstery perforation and colour coordinated seat belts are available in higher variants.

Other onboard features include wireless charging and overhead USB ports, along with a Bang & Olufsen sound system and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. Amazon Alexa Built-In with Ford Streaming is also available to access music and podcasts via voice command.

Driver aids are covered by the Ford Co-Pilot360 system with speed sign recognition, lane centering assist, evasive steer assist, reverse brake assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-go feature. Included in the Performance Pack is the active pothole mitigation function, which continuously monitors the suspension, body, steering and brakes while adjusting the suspension setup accordingly.

With the FordPass app, users can remotely start and stop the vehicle, lock and locate it and schedule a start time. It also gives users access to the vehicle’s health and status checks. Assembled at the Flat Rock assembly plant in Michigan, USA, the all-new Mustang will go on sale in the US in the summer of 2023.

    2024 Ford Mustang – 7th-gen S650 debuts on Sept 14

The countdown to the seventh-generation Ford Mustang (codenamed S650) has officially begun, with the latest iteration of the “pony car” set to make its debut on September 14. The all-new model will be presented at The Stampede, which is a cross-country owner tour that culminates at Hart Plaza in conjunction with this year’s Detroit Auto Show.

The S650 Mustang succeeds the sixth-generation (S550) model, which has proven to be very successful by being the first Mustang to be marketed and sold globally since its premiere in 2013. We first got the Mustang in 2016 before a facelift made its global debut in 2017, although the latter was only previewed here in 2018.

These photos from Ford show the latest Mustang under wraps for now, although we can expect an evolutionary design approach judging by the rough shape. Reports suggest the current crop of engines, which include an EcoBoost 2.3 litre turbocharged four-cylinder and Coyote 5.0 litre naturally-aspirated V8, will be carried over, albeit with slightly less power as a byproduct of stricter emissions regulations.

The six-speed manual transmission is also said to be retained, as will a 10-speed automatic from the 2018 facelift. More powerful variants with a supercharged engine are to be expected, with rumours also hinting at hybrid power with all-wheel drive, which would be a first for the Mustang. No chance of an all-electric powertrain, as that niche is currently filled by another Mustang, the Mach-E.

Other speculations suggest the upcoming Mustang will use a unique chassis that incorporates elements from the CD6 platform that underpins the current Explorer as well as the Lincoln Aviator. We’ll only know the full story in a few weeks’ time when the S650 makes its full debut to extend the Mustang’s 58-year heritage. Looking forward to it?
